Choose a film when the game offers a focused premise or a bounded story that can make a satisfying feature-length arc. Choose a TV series when relationships, supporting characters, or a wider world need room to develop across episodes. Neither format is inherently more faithful: the right choice depends on what matters most in the game—its plot, characters, setting, atmosphere, or gameplay identity—and whether the adaptation should retell the game or tell a new story in its world.
How to decide which format fits a game
Start by identifying what a screen adaptation needs to preserve. A game built around a defined sequence of events may offer a plot to reshape. Another may be best known for its setting, mood, or a distinctive rule the player learns by interacting with it. Those qualities can call for very different adaptations.

Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, put the principle plainly: “There’s not one size that fits all in terms of a method of adapting video games to film or TV.” Sony’s account of its projects makes a useful distinction: a game with an established story and characters can be adapted directly, while a game without a developed narrative may call for an original screen story or a real-world connection (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2023).

When a series can deepen an established game story
A television adaptation does not have to invent a sprawling plot to justify its format. The Last of Us had an established narrative, world, and characters, but adapting it still involved deciding what to omit and what new material to add. Sony said that the series could explore side characters in more depth than the game did (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2023).

In a 2025 feature, Neil Druckmann said season one adapted the entire first game, with viewers receiving the whole story by the season’s end. He also said: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important” (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2025). The example shows that a series can follow a defined game narrative while adding screen-specific character work; it does not establish that television is always the best format for story-driven games.
When a film can build on a compact premise or visual idea
A film can suit a game whose central appeal is a clear premise, a distinctive visual identity, or a gameplay idea that can be translated into a concentrated cinematic experience. It need not reproduce a long campaign beat for beat.

Adapting a gameplay rule
The British Film Institute describes the film adaptation of Exit 8 as carrying the game’s loop and anomaly rules into a cinematic nightmare. That is an example of translating how a game feels and works, rather than relying only on a conventional plot retelling (BFI, 2026).
Using the franchise’s identity in a family film
NBCUniversal describes The Super Mario Bros. Movie as an animated family film, alongside adaptations that take other genres and forms. The collaboration also illustrates why a rights-holder’s involvement can matter: Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said, “I can say with great confidence that we would not have been able to do this without that partnership with Nintendo” (NBCUniversal, 2023). That supports the value of collaboration, not a claim that films have an inherent advantage.

A new story in a game world is a different kind of adaptation
An adaptation does not have to retell a game’s events. If the game’s strongest asset is its setting, a screen story can draw on that world while introducing a different plot and characters.
Fallout: extending the world
Bethesda’s 2020 announcement described a television adaptation of Fallout developed with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films. Todd Howard, Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, said the team had considered different ways to bring Fallout to the screen before settling on Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Kilter Films as partners (Bethesda, 2020). The example illustrates a format choice built around the game’s world rather than a claim that the series reproduces a particular game’s plot.

According to Qizilbash, the Gran Turismo games did not have an established story for the film to adapt. Instead, the film centered on the real story of Jann Mardenborough, a player who became a professional race car driver (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2023). A game’s identity can therefore provide a starting point even when its plot is not the screen story.
What the examples can—and cannot—tell you
Mario, Twisted Metal, and Five Nights at Freddy’s show that video-game adaptations span animated family film, action-comedy television, and horror film. The BFI’s discussion of Exit 8 adds a film built around a game’s loop and anomaly rules, while its treatment of The Last of Us and Fallout illustrates different television approaches (NBCUniversal, 2023; BFI, 2026). These are examples of range, not a controlled comparison of quality or commercial results.

There is no industry-wide statistic in the cited material that establishes whether game adaptations succeed more often as films or as series. Project figures should not be treated as a head-to-head test: Sony reported in April 2023 that Uncharted had exceeded $400 million worldwide and that The Last of Us averaged 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes. Those are historical company-reported figures for different projects and different measures (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2023). Likewise, NBCUniversal reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office as of its October 2023 article; that single film’s studio-reported box-office figure says nothing by itself about films versus series overall (NBCUniversal, 2023).
