Video game adaptations compared: films, TV series, and animated shows

There is no universally superior video game adaptation format. A feature film is best at compressing a premise into a concentrated journey; television has room for relationships, detours and lore; animation can either closely reproduce a game’s visual identity or build an entirely new one. The right comparison asks what each version preserves and what it changes: plot, characters, worldbuilding, player agency, visual language and format.

The strongest examples make those choices deliberately. The Last of Us closely translates the first game’s character-driven story, Fallout demonstrates how a series can build from a game world, and Arcane expands limited game lore into an independent animated drama.

How films, television and animation adapt games differently

A game is not only a story. It is also a system of movement, exploration, challenge, repetition and choice. Screen adaptations remove or reshape those interactive elements, so a successful version must replace their dramatic function rather than simply copy scenes.

Format What it can do well Typical adaptation problem Best fit
Feature film Deliver a clear premise, memorable set pieces and a complete arc in a limited running time. Large game worlds, optional quests and slow character relationships may be compressed or discarded. A focused origin story, single campaign or concept that works without extensive lore.
Live-action series Let relationships, mysteries and worldbuilding develop across episodes, with room for detours. Episodes can dilute momentum, and a fixed viewing path cannot reproduce player choice. Character-led stories and worlds that need time to unfold.
Animated film or series Translate stylized designs, impossible environments and game-like action without live-action constraints. Animation may be judged against the game’s look even when it intentionally pursues a different visual language. Stories that benefit from a distinctive art direction, expanded lore or heightened fantasy.

These are strategic tendencies, not rules. A film can preserve a game’s mood more faithfully than a long series, while an animated show can be either a close retelling or a largely original story using familiar characters.

The six questions that make a fair comparison

1. What is the plot relationship?

Identify whether the screen work is a close retelling, a selective adaptation, a sequel, a side story or a substantially new narrative. Calling every project “faithful” hides important differences. The Last of Us season one is described by co-creator Neil Druckmann as adapting the entire first game, while Arcane uses the League of Legends setting to tell a story that expands the characters’ histories rather than replaying a campaign.

2. Does it add or assume worldbuilding?

A game can distribute lore through exploration, item descriptions, optional dialogue and repeated play. A screen version must decide what viewers need immediately. It may explain an unfamiliar world, fill in gaps left by the game or assume that the audience already knows its factions and history. BFI’s Sight and Sound analysis describes Arcane as expanding the limited lore supplied by the multiplayer game, particularly through the histories of Vi and Jinx.

3. What emotional core survives?

Plot events are not the only measure of fidelity. Ask which relationship, theme or moral question remains central after gameplay is removed. The Royal Television Society’s discussion of The Last of Us quotes MonRae co-founder Bronagh Monahan advising creators to “Respect the source material but don’t treat it as gospel.” Her point is to find the source’s emotional core and mood, then translate those qualities into a form television can sustain.

4. What replaces player agency?

In a game, the player can choose routes, explore at a different pace, fail repeatedly and sometimes define how a character behaves. Television guides everyone through a fixed sequence. Royal Television Society contributor Lisa Opie describes that distinction directly: the player’s agency helps define the narrative in the game, whereas the television viewer receives a directed experience. An adaptation should therefore replace interactivity with choices made by the protagonist, suspense created by editing, or a strong point of view.

5. Is the visual identity reproduced or reinterpreted?

Some adaptations recreate recognizable costumes, creatures, locations and interface-inspired imagery. Others retain only a mood or character silhouette and build a new visual language. BFI contrasts Arcane‘s distinctive animated style with Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, whose animation styles draw more heavily on the games’ established visual identities.

6. Does the running time fit the material?

A feature’s compression can remove filler and produce a clean, satisfying arc. Episodic television can spend time on a relationship, a political conflict or a journey that would be a montage in a film. Neither is automatically better: the question is whether the chosen length supports the story’s central tension.

The Last of Us: a close, character-centered translation

The Last of Us is one of the clearest examples of a deliberate close adaptation. In an interview published by Sony Interactive Entertainment on 25 April 2025, Neil Druckmann—Naughty Dog studio head and an executive producer, co-creator and writer of HBO’s series—said that “season one adapted the entire [first] game.” He also said season two covers a large portion, but not all, of the next game’s story.

That approach preserves the game’s central relationship while allowing television to rearrange pacing and emphasis. Druckmann credited writer and co-creator Craig Mazin’s experience playing the games and his interest in their characters, relationships and questions as important to their conversations. The result is not a scene-for-scene recording of gameplay; it is a guided drama built around the same emotional engine.

The Royal Television Society’s comparison highlights the trade-off. The game lets players control movement, investigate spaces and determine the rhythm of danger. The series fixes that path, but it can spend time on character relationships and take story detours that would function differently in a playable campaign. This is a format change, not evidence that one version is inherently more authentic.

Playing first is optional. Druckmann said: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important. But if you do, and you watch the show, it will fill in certain gaps for the game.” The statement works in both directions: newcomers can follow the television narrative, while players may notice altered emphasis, omitted exploration and additions that reframe familiar events.

Fallout: television built from a game world

The Royal Television Society discusses Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout alongside The Last of Us as a prominent example of a television adaptation that resonated with audiences. The article quotes National Film and Television School director Jon Wardle, who attributes part of that response to people involved in the productions loving and understanding the games. Wardle also cautions that “there is no ‘universal secret’ to success.”

That qualification matters. A production’s knowledge of its source can help it recognize the details fans value, but it does not guarantee a good script, coherent season or useful adaptation of gameplay. For Fallout, the relevant comparison is not simply whether every game event appears on screen. Examine how the series uses the setting, tone and rules of the game world, then judge whether its own characters and conflicts work for viewers who have never played.

Arcane: when adaptation means expansion

BFI’s Sight and Sound analysis uses Arcane to show that adaptation can be expansion rather than retelling. The Netflix animated series is based on League of Legends, a multiplayer game whose playable characters had less detailed personal history than a conventional single-player protagonist. The series develops the backgrounds of Vi and Jinx and turns fragments of game lore into an extended dramatic narrative.

This strategy changes the usual fidelity question. Instead of asking whether Arcane reproduces a particular mission, ask whether its conflicts feel consistent with the characters and world that players recognize. Its animation is also intentionally distinct, according to BFI’s comparison. That visual independence lets the show express emotion, architecture and action in ways that would not be possible if it were limited to reproducing an in-game camera or model.

Animated adaptations therefore divide into at least two groups: works such as Arcane that use a game’s assets and lore as a foundation for a new visual and narrative language, and works that aim to make the game’s look immediately recognizable. Both can be legitimate; they simply promise different experiences.

What film adaptations contribute

Films must make their case quickly. They often select a game’s most legible hook—a creature-catching mystery, a platforming adventure, a recognizable mascot or a survival premise—and shape it into a self-contained movie. The result may be closer to a game-inspired adventure than to a literal campaign adaptation.

A practical guide published by Virgin Media O2 on 20 March 2026 lists The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, A Minecraft Movie and Tomb Raider among film examples. The list is useful for finding contrasting approaches, not an authoritative ranking. BFI specifically identifies Sonic and The Super Mario Bros. Movie as films whose animation styles draw heavily on their games.

When judging a film, separate recognizable references from structural fidelity. A costume, sound effect or location can reassure fans, but the more important questions are whether the movie has a functioning protagonist, a comprehensible conflict and a pace that suits a feature. A film that reproduces iconography while losing the game’s sense of discovery may be less successful than one that changes plot details but preserves its tone.

Are video game TV shows better than video game movies?

No. Television has an advantage when the source depends on relationships, layered factions or gradual revelations. Film has an advantage when the premise can be expressed through one decisive arc and when prolonged explanation would weaken momentum. Animation may be the best choice when the world is stylized or physically impossible to stage in live action.

Viewer priority Format to consider first Why
A complete story in one sitting Feature film Its limited duration forces a clear beginning, middle and end.
Character relationships and moral dilemmas Episodic series Episodes create space for gradual trust, conflict and consequences.
Deep setting lore Series or an expansive animated show More screen time can explain history without turning every detail into exposition.
Stylized worlds and fantastical action Animation Artists can create a visual identity unconstrained by live-action physics.
A familiar mascot or game look Format varies Both film and animation can reproduce recognizable designs; execution matters more than the category.

How reception should be read

Review scores show how a title was received at a particular moment, not a permanent quality ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, published in 2025 and accessed for this comparison on 13 October 2026, displayed the following scores:

Series and season Tomatometer Popcornmeter Qualification
Arcane season two 100% 81% Scores shown in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide; they can change.
The Last of Us season one 96% 86% Scores shown in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide; they can change.
Fallout season two 96% 96% Scores shown in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide; they can change.
Fallout season one 93% 95% Scores shown in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide; they can change.

The critic and audience measures are not interchangeable, and different seasons are not directly comparable as though they were one film. Use scores as one signal alongside the adaptation strategy, your familiarity with the game and the kind of viewing experience you want.

Do you need to play the game first?

Usually, no. A well-constructed adaptation supplies the information needed for a first-time viewer. Druckmann’s statement about The Last of Us makes that intention explicit. Watching first can also preserve surprises that the game reveals gradually.

Playing first is worthwhile when you want to compare agency, exploration and worldbuilding. You can notice which spaces became set pieces, which optional conversations became central scenes and which game mechanics had no direct screen equivalent. It is an additional layer, not homework. If you choose to play, verify the current edition and platform compatibility before buying; the available versions and listings can change.

A practical way to choose what to watch

  1. Start with your preferred experience. Choose a film for a contained adventure, a series for sustained character or lore work, and animation for a stylized visual interpretation.
  2. Check the plot relationship. Decide whether you want a close retelling such as the approach described for The Last of Us, an original story in a game world such as the model discussed for Fallout, or an expansion like Arcane.
  3. Decide how much prior knowledge you want. If you are new to the game, favor a version that explains its world on screen. If you know the source well, look for changes in emphasis rather than expecting a replay.
  4. Use reception data carefully. Compare critic and audience scores for the same season and remember that displayed figures are snapshots.
  5. Check availability in your territory. The Virgin Media O2 guide’s information was UK-specific and dated 20 March 2026. It listed Fallout and Tomb Raider on Amazon Prime Video, Arcane and The Witcher on Netflix, Halo on Paramount+, and The Last of Us plus several films through the Virgin Media Store at that time. Streaming rights and purchase options change, so confirm the service in your country before starting.

The bottom line for comparing adaptations

Judge a game adaptation by what it is trying to preserve. Films specialize in compression, television in sustained development and animation in visual reinterpretation, but individual works can cross those boundaries. The Last of Us shows how a close, character-centered translation can guide non-players; Fallout illustrates the value of creators who understand a game’s world without following a universal formula; and Arcane demonstrates that expanding lore can be more productive than retelling a playable plot. The best adaptation is the one whose format makes its chosen story clearer, richer and more emotionally effective.
