A video editor’s timeline is the control center for picture, sound, effects, transitions, and timed text. Use it to make non-destructive edits: trim clip edges, cut at the playhead, move clips into a new order, balance audio with dedicated tools, and add captions only after the picture edit is stable. The exact labels and export formats vary by application, so confirm the receiving platform’s specification before delivery.
What the timeline does
Adobe defines the timeline as the workspace where video clips, audio clips, effects, and transitions are arranged chronologically. You can preview the sequence at any position, change the order of clips, trim their duration, and apply enhancements. In Premiere, these decisions do not alter the source files in the Project panel. Adobe Help describes this as: “Editing on the timeline is non-destructive: you can trim, cut, copy, and move clips without altering the original media.” The final export is a new file encoded from those decisions.
The playhead
The playhead is the vertical location marker showing the exact point being reviewed or edited. Move it to inspect a moment, set an edit point, or play from that position. It is not itself a clip boundary; a clip can begin or end elsewhere on the timeline.
Tracks and sequence time
Video tracks stack picture layers, while audio tracks hold dialogue, music, ambience, and effects. Their position along the horizontal time axis determines when each item starts and ends. Keep related material on identifiable tracks so you can mute, solo, lock, or edit it without losing context.

Core timeline operations in Premiere
Trim a clip
- Select the clip in the Timeline panel.
- Drag its left or right edge to change the in or out point.
- Play around the new edit and check that the following material still starts where intended.
Trimming changes the portion used in the sequence; it does not delete the underlying source media.
Cut a clip
- Place the playhead at the frame where the cut should occur.
- Choose the Razor tool.
- Click the clip. Premiere creates separate timeline items that can be moved or trimmed independently.
Reposition material
Select a clip and drag it to another time or track. Watch for gaps, overlaps, and linked audio. If picture and sound must remain together, move the linked items as a unit; if you intentionally need to separate them, confirm that the resulting sync is correct.
Review every change
Use the Program monitor while playing through the edit, then inspect the cut frame by frame with the playhead. A timeline can look orderly while a transition, reaction, or line of dialogue is mistimed.
Editing audio alongside picture
Picture and sound coexist in the same sequence, but level balancing and processing are performed with audio-specific controls. Premiere identifies Essential Sound as an audio-editing panel. DaVinci Resolve documents Fairlight controls and plug-ins available from its Edit workflow. These are application-specific surfaces, not identical controls shared by every editor.

A practical audio pass
- Keep dialogue, music, ambience, and effects on clearly identified tracks.
- Listen while watching the image; a technically audible sound can still mask a speaker or distract from an edit.
- Use the editor’s mixer, clip controls, and processing tools to make level and tonal changes.
- Check transitions, cuts, and quiet sections at normal listening level, then review the exported file rather than relying only on the timeline preview.
The available documentation confirms these audio workflows but does not establish one universal loudness target or mixing standard. Follow the specification for your broadcaster, platform, or client instead of copying an arbitrary number.
Captions and subtitles: what to put on the timeline
Captions and subtitles are timed text segments associated with a sequence. Everyday usage differs by platform: some teams reserve “captions” for accessibility text that can include relevant sound descriptions and “subtitles” for translated or spoken dialogue, while other systems use the words interchangeably. Treat the delivery specification—not the label—as authoritative.
Premiere transcript-to-caption workflow
- Finish the picture edit, or get it very close to locked.
- Transcribe the sequence in Premiere.
- Review and correct the transcript, including names, punctuation, and line breaks.
- Create captions from the edited transcript. Premiere places them on a separate caption track.
- Edit each segment with timeline tools: move its timing, trim its duration, and correct text.
- Style the track or choose the required export method.
Adobe recommends adding captions when the edit is finished or nearly finished. If you create them too early and later delete or substantially change picture segments, the affected caption text may need to be recreated manually.
Burned-in, sidecar, or embedded delivery
- Burned-in: text is rendered into the image and cannot be switched off by the viewer.
- SRT sidecar: a separate text file travels with the video and must retain the expected filename and timing relationship.
- Embedded: captions are stored as a track in a container such as a supported QuickTime or MXF file.
Choose one only after checking the destination’s accepted format, styling rules, language requirements, and whether viewers need an on/off caption control.

Resolve subtitle and audio controls
Subtitle tracks and styling
DaVinci Resolve’s Edit page supports timed-text imports including TTML, SRT, and XML, plus embedded MXF/IMF subtitles. Subtitle entries appear above video tracks and can be moved and trimmed like other timeline media. The Inspector can adjust font, color, size, position, and other track styles. Resolve also supports multiple subtitle tracks, allowing language versions to be switched or maintained separately.
Resolve delivery choices
Resolve can render subtitles into the final picture or export separate TTML, SRT, or VTT files. Do not assume that an imported format can be exported unchanged for every destination; verify the receiving service or broadcaster’s required profile.
Fairlight audio workflow
Resolve describes Fairlight controls and plug-ins for audio work. Keep dialogue and other elements organized in the Edit timeline, then use the available Fairlight tools for balancing and processing. Review the result after rendering, because an export can reveal timing, routing, or level problems that are not obvious during editing.
When should captions be added?
Add them after the picture edit is locked or close to locked. This order avoids repeatedly retiming text after trims and deleted scenes. If accessibility or translation requires an early transcript, treat it as a draft: mark it for revision whenever the sequence changes, and perform a complete timing and wording pass after the final picture change.

Timeline and subtitle checklist before export
- Play from the beginning and inspect every cut, transition, and gap.
- Confirm that linked dialogue remains synchronized with faces and actions.
- Listen for clipped, masked, or unexpectedly quiet audio.
- Check caption spelling, speaker identification, line breaks, and reading timing.
- Verify that each caption starts and ends with the intended shot or speech.
- Confirm whether the client requires burned-in text, an embedded track, or a sidecar file.
- Check the exact container and text format: for example, SRT, VTT, TTML, XML, QuickTime, or MXF.
- Render a short test and inspect it on the target player before producing the final master.
Common problems and fixes
Captions no longer match the edit
Cause: the picture changed after captions were created. Fix: regenerate or retime the affected segments from the latest transcript, then perform a complete review.
Text is present in the editor but missing for viewers
Cause: captions were left on a non-exported track, or the delivery expected a sidecar or embedded stream instead of burned-in text. Fix: inspect export settings and the destination specification; test the resulting file in a player that exposes subtitle tracks.
Subtitle formatting changes after export
Cause: the target format or player does not support the styling used in the timeline. Fix: check the destination’s supported font, position, color, and format profile; burn text into the picture only when that is acceptable.
Dialogue is hard to understand
Cause: music, ambience, or effects compete with speech, or processing differs between preview and export. Fix: rebalance with the editor’s audio controls, listen in context, and review the rendered file.

Imported subtitles have timing or encoding errors
Cause: the source file uses a profile, character encoding, or time base the editor or destination does not interpret as expected. Fix: confirm the required TTML, SRT, XML, VTT, MXF, or IMF variant and re-export from a known-compatible template.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit captions before the video is finished?
Yes, but treat them as provisional. Substantial picture changes can require manual caption recreation, so perform final caption cleanup after the edit is locked or nearly locked.
Are subtitles always separate files?
No. Depending on the delivery requirement, they may be burned into the image, embedded in a QuickTime or MXF file, or delivered as a sidecar such as SRT, TTML, or VTT.
Does every editor use the same caption terminology?
No. Terminology varies. Use the receiving platform’s specification to determine whether it expects accessibility captions, translated subtitles, or a particular track format.
