When a video door phone loses sound and picture at the same time, start with the shared path: power, wiring, PoE, network link, or a failed endpoint. Do not begin with a factory reset. First identify whether the installation is a four-wire analog system or an IP/PoE system, then test audio and video separately. This sequence isolates the fault while preserving your settings.
Identify which type of video door phone you have
The troubleshooting path depends on the architecture. A traditional four-wire system carries power, audio and video on separate conductors. An IP system sends signaling and media over Ethernet, usually with Power over Ethernet (PoE) or a local power adapter.

| Characteristic | Four-wire/analog | IP/PoE |
|---|---|---|
| Main connection | Separate terminals for power, audio and video | Ethernet cable to a PoE switch, injector or local network |
| Typical components | Outdoor door station, indoor monitor and dedicated supply | Door station, indoor station or client, switch, router and sometimes cloud service |
| First physical check | Supply voltage, terminal seating and conductor continuity | Link light, DHCP status, switch port and PoE budget |
| Most useful diagram | The exact model’s terminal wiring diagram | The manufacturer’s network, stream and provisioning documentation |
| Common shared failure | Power supply, common cable or monitor/door-station failure | PoE supply, Ethernet path, network service or endpoint failure |
Do not assume wire colors or terminal labels transfer between manufacturers. The Hikvision KIS203T manual, for example, shows distinct power, audio-input/output and video connections. Use your own model’s diagram rather than copying that arrangement.
Look at the symptoms before opening anything. If every indoor station is black and silent, a common supply, door station or network path is more likely. If one monitor fails while another works, the failed monitor or its branch wiring deserves priority. If the local monitor works but a phone app does not, the camera and local wiring may be fine and the fault may be in cloud access, firewall rules or the client connection.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Start with a safe power and link check
Simultaneous loss of audio and video usually indicates a common supply or connection problem. Check the following before changing menus:
- Is the indoor monitor completely dead, or does it power up normally?
- Does the outdoor station show a status light, chime, camera illumination or other sign of life?
- Is the AC adapter or low-voltage supply plugged in, switched on and protected by an intact fuse or breaker?
- Are screw terminals fully seated, with no loose, corroded or pulled-out conductors?
- Has the cable been crushed, cut, extended beyond its rated distance or exposed to water?
For an IP unit, inspect the Ethernet plug at both ends and the switch port. A missing link light can mean a bad cable, disabled port, failed door station or no power. Confirm that the switch has enough PoE capacity for every connected device. DOOR’s support documentation notes that an undersized PoE budget can cause power dips that reset or stall a camera, and that no green status LED indicates no PoE on its platform.
Orion Systems LA recommends checking the power or PoE connection, inspecting the network cable, verifying the correct voltage and trying a known-working power source or PoE port. A different port is a useful diagnostic only when its voltage and PoE standard are appropriate for the device.
Do not substitute a random adapter because its plug fits. Compare output voltage, polarity, current rating and connector type with the door phone label or manual. On a PoE installation, verify that the switch or injector supplies the standard the station expects and that the total wattage remains within the switch budget when infrared lighting, a lock relay or other loads activate.
Use a symptom matrix before changing settings
| Observed symptom | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Indoor monitor and door station both dead | Outlet, fuse, low-voltage supply, PoE budget, cable continuity and common power terminals |
| Monitor powers on but no call, sound or picture | Door-station status, link light, terminal seating, DHCP status or endpoint pairing |
| Audio works, video is black | Lens obstruction, camera enablement, video conductor, camera stream and bandwidth |
| Video works, no sound | Mute and volume, microphone or speaker openings, audio terminals and stream audio settings |
| Visitor hears resident but resident cannot hear visitor | Talk mode, microphone path and two-way stream configuration |
| Local station works, app fails | Cloud reachability, outbound firewall rules, mobile data or Wi-Fi and client provisioning |
This table is only a starting point. Change one condition at a time and make a new call after each change. Otherwise, several simultaneous adjustments can hide the original fault.
Test audio and video independently
Make one test call while changing only one condition at a time. If audio works but video does not, concentrate on the camera, video conductor or stream. If video works but audio does not, concentrate on microphones, speakers, audio wiring or media settings. If both fail, return to power, link and endpoint checks.
If there is no audio in either direction
- Raise the indoor monitor and door-station volume controls and clear any mute indicator.
- Press and hold the talk or answer button for the model’s normal conversation mode; some stations do not open the microphone until a call is accepted.
- Inspect microphone and speaker openings for dust, paint, insect nests or protective film. Clean gently without pushing debris into the opening.
- On a four-wire system, turn power off, reseat both audio conductors and compare each terminal with the model diagram. Never move wires while the circuit is energized.
- Try a second indoor station or a local test, if the system provides one. A failure at every station points toward the door station, common wiring or supply; one failed station points toward that station or its branch wiring.
The Swann doorphone troubleshooting guide lists low volume, a dirty monitor and disconnected audio wiring among causes of missing or weak sound. A loose terminal can produce intermittent audio even when the picture remains stable.

If audio works only one way on an IP system
One-way audio is often a stream or client configuration issue rather than a failed speaker. Verify that the recorder, indoor station or mobile client is configured to receive both video and audio streams. Hikvision’s one-way-audio guidance identifies a stream setting that can leave the visitor audible in only one direction. Confirm the setting on both ends, save it, and place a new test call.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
If the sound is distorted, quiet or intermittent
- Move the indoor station away from a power supply, amplifier or other source of electrical interference.
- Check that the microphone and speaker are not being covered by a case or mounting material.
- On analog wiring, inspect for a partially broken conductor or a terminal that becomes loose when the handset is moved.
- On IP systems, check whether the network is dropping packets or the client is switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
If there is no video or the screen is black
Outdoor camera and monitor checks
- Clean the lens with a soft, dry cloth and remove any shipping film, tape, visor or object blocking the field of view.
- Confirm that the camera is enabled in the door-station or indoor-station settings.
- Check whether the outdoor station is online and responds to a call or doorbell press.
- On a four-wire installation, inspect the video conductor and both video terminals against the model diagram.
- Restart the call after each change; a display that was already open may not renegotiate a stream automatically.
The Swann guide identifies lens obstruction, disconnected AC power and incorrect video wiring as no-video causes. Orion’s guide likewise recommends confirming camera enablement, network connectivity and online status, then restarting the intercom.
Use a test image when the platform provides one
Some IP platforms offer a camera test image separate from live-call video. Compare the two:
- Test image good, call video poor: investigate the resident phone, indoor client, call-path bandwidth or session configuration.
- Test image degraded or absent: investigate the camera, door-station power, Ethernet path and property network.
DOOR documents this distinction for its own platform. It is a useful diagnostic principle, but its exact menus and behavior are not universal.

A black screen is not always a dead camera. Check whether the display shows a “camera offline,” “stream unavailable” or similar message, and note whether the image returns briefly during boot. A picture that appears for a few seconds and then disappears can indicate PoE voltage sag, a saturated switch, overheating or a stream that the client cannot sustain.
IP and PoE troubleshooting
Once power and the physical link are confirmed, check whether the door station has a valid network identity and a stable route to its client or service.
Check link, DHCP and switch capacity
- Look for an Ethernet link light at the door station and switch.
- Check the station’s DHCP or network-status page for an address, gateway and current link state.
- Confirm that the switch port is enabled and not showing excessive errors or utilization.
- Review the switch’s PoE allocation and remaining budget. A port can show link while still cycling power under load.
- If possible, connect the station briefly to a known-good, correctly rated PoE port and cable.
DOOR reports a minimum tested camera speed of 10 Mbps for its platform and warns that saturated switch ports can drop video frames. Treat 10 Mbps as that platform’s tested floor, not a universal specification for every video door phone.
Bandwidth problems may affect only the live call. A low-resolution test image or local preview can work while a higher-quality stream, remote viewer or multiple simultaneous clients fail. Check switch utilization during a call, not only when the system is idle. If the platform permits stream selection, compare the main and substream settings with the client requirements.
Check firewall and outbound access
Cloud-connected systems may need outbound traffic that a restrictive firewall blocks. DOOR lists TCP outbound ports 443, 3478, 5349 and 8883, UDP ports 1025–65535, and specific vendor domains for its own cloud service. Those values are platform-specific; obtain the exact requirements for your model instead of opening the same ports indiscriminately.

After a firewall change, place a new call and watch whether the station remains online. If local monitor video works but remote-app video fails, the fault is more likely to be cloud reachability, firewall policy or client connectivity than the camera itself. Confirm the phone is logged into the intended account, has permission to use the device, and is not restricted by a VPN, captive portal or battery-saving policy.
Restart before resetting
A restart clears a stalled process without deleting pairing, network or stream settings.
- Record the current IP address, DHCP reservation, stream settings, user credentials, indoor-station pairing and any door-lock configuration you can access.
- End an active call and close the mobile app or desktop client.
- Power-cycle the indoor station and door station. For an IP system, also restart the PoE switch or injector and router only if the link remains stuck.
- Wait for the network and stations to finish booting, then open a fresh call.
- Check audio and video independently again.
Aiphone’s IX installation manual directs users to unplug the power supply or turn off the power switch when a unit is down or not operating properly. Follow the equivalent power procedure for your model; do not pull a live terminal wire as a substitute for a controlled restart.
Allow enough time for DHCP, cloud registration and indoor-station pairing to complete. Repeatedly removing power during boot can make diagnosis harder and may leave a device appearing offline even though it is still starting.
When a factory reset is justified
Use a factory reset only when the device remains inaccessible or incorrectly paired after power, wiring and network checks, or when configuration corruption is the clear remaining cause. A reset can erase network credentials, indoor-station associations, user accounts, stream choices and door-lock settings.
Prepare before pressing reset
- Photograph terminal positions and record model and firmware information.
- Save the IP address, MAC address, DHCP reservation, cloud account and pairing details.
- Confirm you have the provisioning app, administrator credentials and the model’s reset procedure.
- Plan physical access to both the indoor and outdoor stations; some systems need re-pairing at each endpoint.
Reset procedures are model-specific. DOOR specifies holding its camera reset button for more than 15 seconds and warns that the action clears settings and requires fresh pairing. Wyze’s connectivity procedure also places power-cycling and factory reset in that order. Do not hold a button for 15 seconds on an unrelated model unless its documentation says to do so.
Four-wire wiring and electrical safety
Turn off the relevant power supply before opening a station, reseating a terminal or testing continuity. If the circuit includes mains voltage, a power supply enclosure or a door-lock release, use a qualified electrician or intercom installer.

Aiphone’s IX installation manual specifies more than 30 cm (12 inches) of separation from AC 100–240 V wiring. Follow local electrical rules and the model manual if it requires greater clearance, shielding or a particular cable type.

Terminal colors and pin assignments are not interchangeable across brands. A replacement that physically fits can still damage the station or lock if its voltage, polarity or audio/video arrangement differs.
When checking continuity, test each conductor end to end with the circuit de-energized and disconnect the station terminals first. A continuity reading alone does not prove that a cable is suitable under load; corrosion, a high-resistance splice or water ingress can still cause voltage drop when the camera or lock activates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide between repair, replacement and service
| Option | Choose it when | Checks required first |
|---|---|---|
| Repair existing four-wire system | Supply and conductors are accessible, and one station or connection is faulty | Exact terminal diagram, voltage, continuity and indoor-station compatibility |
| Replace a four-wire endpoint | The endpoint fails after known-good power and wiring tests | Matching wiring architecture, voltage, indoor-station compatibility and regional version |
| Repair or reconfigure IP system | Link and PoE are stable but DHCP, stream, firewall or pairing is wrong | PoE budget, switch port, bandwidth, firmware and platform network requirements |
| Upgrade to IP/PoE | You need networked clients or new cabling is practical | Ethernet route, PoE standard and budget, network coverage, cloud dependence and provisioning process |
| Call an installer | Mains voltage, lock wiring or concealed cable faults are involved | Model, symptoms, tests completed and any error or status codes |
Compare total installed cost rather than the device price alone. Include a compatible indoor station, power supply or PoE hardware, cable work, configuration, lock-interface parts and installer time. A cheaper endpoint that requires new cabling or a replacement monitor may cost more than repairing a sound four-wire installation. An IP upgrade may add cloud-service dependence and provisioning work even when Ethernet cable is already present.
Recommended Free Tools
For a compatible four-wire installation, the Hikvision KIS203T is one concrete replacement search term, not a universal substitute. Confirm the existing wiring, supply voltage, indoor-station compatibility and regional version before buying any replacement. If shopping on Amazon, use “Hikvision KIS203T video door phone” only after those checks. For an IP system, consider a “PoE switch for video intercom” only after confirming that the existing switch is undersized or unstable and that the replacement supports the required PoE standard and budget.
Escalation checklist
Service is appropriate when power and cabling test good but the endpoint remains offline, pairing repeatedly fails, video is still absent after a known-good network test, or a reset does not restore operation. Give the installer or manufacturer:
- Exact indoor and outdoor model numbers and regional variants
- Firmware versions and, for IP equipment, the MAC address
- Whether the fault affects one station or every station
- Whether audio, video or both fail, and which direction is affected
- Power-supply rating, PoE switch model and port information
- Network topology, DHCP status and any firewall changes
- Every restart, wiring check and reset already attempted
That record prevents repeated resets and helps support distinguish an endpoint failure from a supply, cable or network problem. Ask a service provider whether it is certified for the brand, can work on the door-lock circuit safely, and can preserve the existing wiring where compatible. Have the model manual, photos of terminals and any status-light pattern ready before the appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did both audio and video stop at once?
A shared power supply, PoE budget, cable, network link or endpoint is more likely than two unrelated component failures. Check the common path first.

What does a black screen with working audio indicate?
The audio path is operating, so inspect the camera lens, camera enablement, video conductor or IP video stream rather than starting with the microphone.
Why can I hear the visitor but not see them?
Check the camera lens, camera enablement, video wiring and stream settings. On IP systems, compare a platform test image with the live-call image and check bandwidth.
Why can the visitor hear me but I cannot hear them?
Check the indoor speaker, mute and volume controls, the talk mode and the two-way audio stream configuration on the recorder, indoor station or client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should I check if the app fails but the indoor monitor works?
Check the phone’s network, account and permissions, then verify cloud reachability and the vendor’s required firewall traffic. A working local monitor points away from the camera and local wiring.
Is a 10 Mbps connection enough for every video door phone?
No. DOOR reports 10 Mbps as a minimum tested camera speed for its own platform. Use the specification for your model and account for other traffic and simultaneous clients.
Can I use another brand’s four-wire monitor?
Not without confirming the exact wiring, voltage, polarity, signaling method, indoor-station compatibility and regional version. Similar terminal colors do not prove compatibility.
