A compact Sony Cinema Line body can suit a solo operator; Blackmagic’s Cinema Camera 6K is built around full-frame open-gate Blackmagic RAW; Canon’s EOS C70 combines internal Cinema RAW Light, production audio and cinema controls. None is a universal winner. Match the camera to the way you will shoot, record sound, move the camera and finish the edit.
Start with the finished film, not the resolution badge
Before comparing bodies, write down the delivery format and the conditions in which you will work. A documentary delivered in 4K, a narrative short requiring reframing, and a multicamera interview have different priorities even when all are called “filmmaking.”

- Delivery: Decide whether the final master is 4K, HD, a vertical version, or several aspect ratios. Extra capture resolution can provide reframing room, but it increases data rates, storage and processing.
- Motion: List your normal-speed frame rate and the slow-motion rates you actually need. A camera may offer a headline frame rate only in a crop, a lower resolution or a dedicated slow-and-fast mode.
- Sound: Determine whether microphones connect directly to the body, through a recorder, or through a mixer. XLR or mini-XLR inputs, headphone monitoring and timecode can remove separate equipment and synchronization work.
- Movement and focus: A solo operator may value dependable autofocus, stabilization and a light body. A crew with a focus puller may prefer a cinema body with a rig, manual lenses and external monitoring.
- Post: Internal RAW gives extensive grading latitude but creates larger files and a heavier workflow than an efficient 10-bit compressed codec. Confirm that your editing computer, storage and backup plan can handle the selected format.
These decisions narrow the field more reliably than choosing 6K or full-frame simply because the number sounds larger.
Shortlist: three distinct filmmaking approaches
| Camera family | What the manufacturer documents | Workflow it can suit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony Cinema Line (FX5, FX2, FX3, FX30, FX6) | Several body tiers in Sony’s current U.S. Cinema Line listing; the FX3 support specification includes 10-bit 4:2:2 recording modes. | From compact solo or gimbal work to larger cinema-style productions, depending on body and accessories. | Exact codec, frame-rate, media and feature support depend on model, selected mode, region and firmware. U.S. listing prices are active figures that can change. |
| Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K | 36 × 24 mm full-frame sensor, active L-Mount, 13-stop stated dynamic range, dual native ISO 400 and 3200, internal 12-bit Blackmagic RAW, H.264 proxies, CFexpress Type B and external USB-C disk recording. | Projects built around RAW capture, open-gate framing and a controlled post-production workflow. | Maximum sensor frame rate depends on resolution and codec. The manufacturer’s listed price is from its India page and is not a universal price. |
| Canon EOS C70 | 4K recording up to 120 fps, 2K crop recording up to 180 fps, electronic image stabilization, internal Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC, HEVC and H.264, two mini-XLR inputs and a timecode port. | Small crews that need cinema-oriented controls, built-in production audio and high-frame-rate options. | Frame rates vary by recording mode. Canon’s standard XF-AVC/MP4 tables list 4K rates up to 59.94/50/24 fps; higher rates use slow-and-fast modes. |
The table describes documented capabilities, not a laboratory ranking. Image quality, autofocus behavior and stabilization in a particular scene depend on lenses, light, settings, operator technique and firmware.

Sony Cinema Line: choose the body tier around your crew
Sony’s current U.S. Cinema Line page groups the FX5, FX2, FX3, FX30 and FX6. Treat that lineup as a set of production tiers rather than one camera with a single “best” specification. Compare the individual model’s sensor mode, codecs, media, power options, inputs and monitoring before ordering; listed prices and availability are U.S.-specific and volatile.
When the compact tier makes sense
A small body is easier to carry on a gimbal, vehicle mount or tight location. That advantage can disappear once you add a cage, monitor, audio interface, batteries and a top handle, so price the complete rig. Check whether the body has the connections and recording redundancy your shoot requires instead of assuming accessories will solve every omission.
When to step up to a larger cinema body
A larger body can provide more direct controls, power and connection options for a crewed set. If a focus puller, sound mixer or camera assistant will operate alongside the camera, the value may be in monitoring, timecode, media management and rig compatibility rather than pixel count. Match the body to the rest of the cameras if you need consistent color and framing across a production.

Codec and bit-depth checks
Sony’s FX3 support listing includes 10-bit 4:2:2 recording modes. Verify the exact codec and frame-rate combination for your market and firmware: a camera’s menu can restrict bit depth, chroma sampling, resolution or frame rate when another option is selected. Confirm whether your editor supports the chosen files and whether you need an in-camera or external proxy workflow.
Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K: a RAW-first, open-gate choice
Blackmagic Design’s technical specification page lists a 36 × 24 mm full-frame sensor, an active L-Mount, 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO values of 400 and 3200. The camera records 12-bit Blackmagic RAW internally, can create H.264 proxies and records to CFexpress Type B cards or external USB-C disks. That combination is attractive when you want to preserve grading and reframing options and have a post-production system prepared for large RAW media.
Recorded modes and their limits
| Resolution or mode | Manufacturer-listed maximum | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| 6048 × 4032 open gate | Up to 36 fps | Uses the full sensor area for flexible reframing and aspect-ratio versions, but not the camera’s highest slow-motion rate. |
| 6048 × 3200 6K DCI | Up to 48 fps | Provides a cinema-oriented 1.90:1 frame with more motion flexibility than open gate. |
| 6048 × 2520 | Up to 60 fps | Useful when a wider 2.4:1-style frame and 60-fps capture fit the project. |
| 4096 × 2160 4K DCI | Up to 60 fps | Reduces resolution while retaining a DCI frame and higher normal-speed or slow-motion options. |
| 1920 × 1080 | Up to 120 fps | Highest listed frame rate, with an HD finishing or proxy-oriented resolution. |
Blackmagic notes that maximum sensor frame rate depends on the selected resolution and codec. Test the exact combination you intend to use, especially if a scene requires both a particular RAW compression and a specific high frame rate.

What the RAW workflow adds
RAW keeps more image information available for exposure, white-balance and color decisions in post, but it is not free. Budget for fast CFexpress Type B media or a compatible USB-C disk, multiple copies of the rushes, and enough working storage for the chosen compression. H.264 proxies can make offline editing easier; keep the camera originals organized so the edit can relink to the RAW files for finishing.
Lens and sensor planning
The active L-Mount determines which lenses attach directly. A full-frame sensor requires lenses that cover the intended image circle; a lens designed for a smaller format may vignette or force a crop. Include adapters, support for heavy cinema lenses and the desired depth of field in the system budget. Full-frame does not automatically produce a better image—lighting, focus and lens character still control the shot.
Canon EOS C70: integrated audio and flexible recording modes
Canon’s U.S. EOS C70 product page lists 4K recording up to 120 fps and 2K crop recording up to 180 fps, electronic image stabilization, internal Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC, HEVC and H.264 options, two mini-XLR inputs and a timecode port. Canon also describes Log 2 as offering the broadest sensor-range flexibility while generally requiring more post-production time, with Log 3 as an alternative for a shorter turnaround.
Understand the frame-rate menu
Do not read “4K up to 120 fps” as a promise that every codec, resolution and picture profile runs at 120 fps. Canon’s standard XF-AVC/MP4 tables list 4K rates up to 59.94, 50 and 24 fps. The higher capture rates are available through slow-and-fast modes, and 2K crop recording reaches the listed 180 fps maximum. Plan the recording mode before the shoot and verify the resulting resolution, audio behavior and file format.
Why the audio and timecode connections matter
Two mini-XLR inputs let a compact crew connect professional microphones directly, while the timecode port supports synchronization in multicamera productions. Canon states that the EOS C70 includes a built-in timecode port, internal Cinema RAW Light, Canon 709 Custom Picture Profile and XF-AVC Intra 4K 60p recording. Use the appropriate cables and confirm whether your mixer, recorder and other cameras share the selected timecode standard.

Choosing Log 2 or Log 3
Log 2 can preserve more sensor-range flexibility when the grade is carefully managed. Log 3 is intended for a shorter post-production path. Neither profile fixes clipped highlights or poor exposure; expose consistently, record a monitoring look when needed and test the grade with the lenses and lighting planned for the production.

Capture and post-production: the decisions that change the budget
Compressed 10-bit versus internal RAW
A 10-bit 4:2:2 codec can be efficient for editing and robust enough for many narrative, documentary and corporate grades. Internal RAW offers more latitude but demands faster media, larger backups and a color-managed workflow. Compare a representative shooting day’s data volume, not just the camera body price.
Proxy and backup strategy
- Calculate the expected recording hours, codec data rate and number of cameras.
- Choose approved media with enough sustained write speed for the selected mode; do not infer compatibility from capacity alone.
- Copy cards to two independent destinations before formatting them.
- Generate or retain proxies for offline editing when the RAW or intraframe files are too heavy for the workstation.
- Keep camera originals, audio, project files and lookup tables in a documented folder structure so a finishing editor can relink the project.
Editing hardware
High-resolution RAW and high-frame-rate material can stress CPU, GPU, memory and storage. A proxy workflow reduces timeline load, but finishing still requires access to the originals. Check your software’s current support for Blackmagic RAW, Cinema RAW Light and the Sony codec you select before committing a production.
Frame rates, crops and sensor formats
Normal-speed delivery is often 23.98/24, 25 or 29.97/30 fps, depending on the project and region. Slow motion requires capture at a higher rate and playback at the delivery rate; 60 fps played at 24 fps is 2.5× slower, while 120 fps is 5× slower. The camera may use a crop, reduce resolution or disable features in those modes, so inspect the complete specification table.
Full-frame and Super 35/crop formats change field of view, depth-of-field choices and lens availability. A crop can be useful for extra reach or for using a smaller lens image circle, but it changes framing and may reduce low-light options. If several cameras must match, standardize sensor mode, aspect ratio, shutter practice and color-management settings during pre-production.
Focus, stabilization and camera movement
- Solo operation: Prioritize autofocus behavior you can monitor, electronic or optical stabilization where documented, a viewable screen and a rig light enough to carry all day.
- Gimbal or drone-style movement: Check body dimensions, lens balance, power draw, remote control and whether stabilization modes conflict with the movement you plan.
- Tripod and dolly work: Weight, mounting points, monitoring outputs and repeatable manual focus may matter more than body size.
- Traditional crew: Allocate a dedicated focus and camera-control workflow. A body that exposes useful monitoring and timecode connections can save set-up time.
The supplied specifications do not establish comparative autofocus accuracy or stabilization performance for these cameras. Treat those as scene- and setup-dependent decisions that require your own testing or a rental.
Audio, monitoring and synchronization checklist
Before purchase, verify the complete signal path:
- Microphone connector type and available input power.
- Whether the body provides headphone monitoring and adjustable level controls.
- Mini-XLR, XLR or timecode requirements for your mixer and recorder.
- HDMI or SDI monitoring output, if an on-set monitor or wireless transmitter is required.
- Timecode compatibility when combining cameras, external audio and long takes.
- Whether high-frame-rate or special recording modes alter audio capture.
Built-in inputs reduce accessory count, but they do not replace proper microphone placement, wind protection or a sound recordist when the production demands clean dialogue.

Build the real system cost
Compare complete shooting packages rather than body-only prices. Include:
| Component | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Body | Which regional model, firmware and warranty apply? Are required codecs and frame rates enabled? |
| Lenses | Does the mount fit directly? Do lenses cover the sensor and provide the desired focus throw, speed and stabilization? |
| Media | Is CFexpress Type B, V90 SD or a compatible USB-C drive required for the selected mode? What capacity covers one shooting day? |
| Power | How many batteries, chargers, USB-C supplies or external plates are needed for a full day? |
| Rig and monitoring | Will a cage, handle, monitor, rods, matte box or gimbal change the balance and weight? |
| Audio and timecode | Are adapters, cables, a recorder, microphones or synchronization boxes necessary? |
| Storage and backup | Can you make two verified copies on location and retain enough working and archive space? |
Media and lenses are part of the camera system. Confirm the manufacturer’s approved media list and the lens mount’s coverage before buying; an inexpensive body can become the costly option after the required accessories are added.
A practical selection process
- Define the deliverables. Write the master resolution, frame rate, aspect ratios and whether reframing is required.
- Choose the recording philosophy. Select efficient 10-bit files for a lighter pipeline or RAW when the grading and storage benefits justify the burden.
- Set the movement and focus plan. Decide whether the camera is handheld, on a gimbal, locked off or operated by a crew with manual focus.
- Specify sound and synchronization. List microphone connectors, headphone monitoring, timecode and multicamera requirements.
- Shortlist compatible lenses. Check mount, sensor coverage, focal lengths, focus operation and support needs.
- Cost the complete package. Add media, batteries, power, rigging, audio, monitoring and backup storage.
- Verify mode dependencies. Read the current regional manual and technical table for the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, crop and audio combination.
- Test before a major shoot. Record representative skin tones, motion, low-light scenes, focus pulls, audio and media transfers using the intended workflow.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying the highest resolution without a post plan
Problem: Large files slow editing and consume backup capacity.
Fix: Calculate a shooting day’s data and test proxies before choosing 6K, RAW or another demanding format.
Assuming every high frame rate is full quality
Problem: Slow-and-fast modes may change resolution, crop, codec or audio.

Problem: A body without the required input or synchronization connection forces extra equipment and may complicate post.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Map every microphone, recorder and camera connection before selecting the body.
Treating a listed price as permanent
Problem: Sony’s displayed U.S. prices and Blackmagic’s India-page price can change or apply only to that market.
Fix: Check the manufacturer or authorized regional seller at purchase time and budget for the complete system.
Which type of filmmaker should choose which?
- Choose a Sony Cinema Line body when you want to select among several body tiers and need a system that can scale from compact operation to a more crew-oriented setup. Narrow the choice by model-specific codecs, media, inputs and stabilization requirements.
- Choose the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K when full-frame open-gate capture, 12-bit Blackmagic RAW, dual native ISO options and an external-USB-C/CFexpress workflow align with your grading and storage capacity.
- Choose the Canon EOS C70 when direct mini-XLR audio, timecode, electronic stabilization, internal Cinema RAW Light and Canon’s documented high-frame-rate modes fit a small-crew production.
Rent or test the complete configuration when autofocus, stabilization, rolling-shutter behavior, ergonomics or lens matching will determine whether a shoot succeeds. Manufacturer specifications establish what a body can record; they do not predict every real-world result.
