Use locking pliers (often called “vice grips”) when you need a workpiece held with a fixed, clamped grip. Use adjustable water-pump or tongue-and-groove pliers when you need to change the jaw opening repeatedly to fit pipes, nuts, sleeves, or irregular shapes.
The phrase “adjustable pliers” is ambiguous. It can mean tongue-and-groove pliers, a pliers wrench, or—incorrectly—an adjustable wrench. Identify the mechanism and jaw surface before choosing a tool.

What “vice grips” and “adjustable pliers” actually mean
Vice grips usually means locking pliers
“Vice-Grip” is a brand name associated with IRWIN. In everyday workshop language, “vice grips” commonly means locking pliers from any manufacturer. A locking-plier set screw establishes the jaw opening and clamping pressure. When you squeeze the handles past the locking point, the jaws stay closed until you release them with the handle lever.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That locking action is the defining feature. It lets the tool keep pressure on a part while your hands move to another task, and it can act as a temporary clamp during fitting, drilling, welding, or holding. IRWIN’s Original Straight Jaw Locking Pliers 102L3 description says the adjustment screw sets pressure and fit and that the setting remains adjusted for repetitive use.

“Adjustable pliers” is not one design
Most people who say adjustable pliers mean water-pump pliers, also called tongue-and-groove pliers. Their joint slides or pivots into different slots, changing the jaw opening. You squeeze the handles to grip, then reposition the joint when the workpiece size changes. KNIPEX describes its Cobra water-pump pliers as having 25 adjustment positions, a self-locking grip on pipes and nuts, and jaws suited to flat, round, and angled components. CHANNELLOCK’s SpeedGrip line uses a push-button adjustable tongue-and-groove design.
Two neighboring tools are often mislabeled as adjustable pliers:
- Adjustable wrenches have a movable jaw intended primarily for nuts and bolts. CHANNELLOCK lists traditional, slim-jaw, wide-jaw, and reversible adjustable-wrench designs.
- Pliers wrenches use smooth, parallel jaws and an adjustable joint. They are a separate category and are generally chosen when a finished fitting must be turned without serrated teeth biting into it.
If a product listing only says “adjustable pliers,” check its photographs and specification sheet. Look for a tongue-and-groove joint, a smooth parallel-jaw pliers-wrench mechanism, or a single movable jaw on an adjustable wrench. Those mechanisms behave differently and should not be compared as if they were interchangeable.

The quick choice: match the job to the mechanism
| Job requirement | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Hold a part while both hands are needed elsewhere | Locking pliers | The jaws lock closed and maintain the set pressure until released. |
| Clamp a workpiece temporarily | Locking pliers | They function as a compact clamp when the jaw profile fits the part. |
| Grip or turn pipes, nuts, sleeves, or irregular shapes that vary in size | Adjustable water-pump/tongue-and-groove pliers | The joint changes the opening quickly for repeated size changes. |
| Grip a flat, square, or hex surface with a locking tool | Straight-jaw locking pliers | Straight jaws provide broad contact on those surface shapes. |
| Grip round pipe or mixed shapes while locking the tool | Curved-jaw locking pliers | Curved jaws are shaped for round pipe as well as square and hex work. |
| Turn a fastener without serrated teeth marking a finished surface | Smooth-jaw pliers wrench or correctly sized wrench | These designs avoid the tooth marks associated with ordinary gripping pliers; verify the exact tool and capacity. |
This is a mechanism-and-task comparison, not a claim that one category is universally stronger or safer. Capacity, jaw geometry, material, and leverage differ substantially among models.
How locking pliers work and when their lock matters
Set once, then hold
To prepare locking pliers, open the jaws around the workpiece and turn the adjustment screw until the jaws contact the part with the desired pressure. Squeeze the handles until the locking mechanism engages. A properly adjusted tool stays closed without continuous hand force. The release lever separates the handles and unlocks the jaws.
This makes locking pliers useful when the work must remain stationary while you align another component, hold a backing piece, or use a second tool. It also makes them useful as a temporary clamp, but the tool is not a substitute for a rated clamp in applications where a release could cause injury or equipment damage.

Choose the jaw profile before tightening
Straight jaws are intended for maximum contact on flat, square, or hex work. They are a good starting point for holding stock, sheet edges, hexagonal fasteners, and other surfaces that present broad flats.
Curved jaws wrap farther around cylindrical or mixed-shape work. IRWIN describes its curved-jaw locking pliers for multiple shapes, including round pipes, square material, and hex bolts. A curved jaw can concentrate force differently from a straight jaw, so place it where the contact is stable and keep the tool aligned with the workpiece.
Why the screw setting can be an advantage
If several identical parts must be held, the adjustment screw can remain at the same setting. That repeatability reduces re-adjustment between pieces. It is less convenient when every workpiece is a different size, because you must release, reset, and lock the tool for each change.
How adjustable water-pump and tongue-and-groove pliers work
Fast changes through joint positions
These pliers use a sliding or stepped joint. Move the joint to a new position to increase or decrease the opening, then squeeze the handles to grip. Push-button versions, such as CHANNELLOCK’s SpeedGrip design, make the position change without manually disengaging a tongue from each groove.
The adjustment is intended for frequent changes in workpiece size. That makes this style practical for plumbing runs, mixed hardware, and jobs where you alternate between a pipe and a nearby nut. Unlike locking pliers, the jaws do not remain clamped when you let go of the handles.

KNIPEX describes Cobra pliers as providing a self-locking grip on pipes and nuts. In this context, “self-locking” describes how the toothed jaws hold under hand pressure and leverage; it does not mean the handles lock shut like locking pliers. You must continue squeezing or maintain force through the handles while turning.

Jaw shape and surface contact
Tongue-and-groove jaws commonly have serrated, opposing surfaces that bite into round or angled work. They can also grip flats, but the teeth may leave marks on decorative, plated, or soft material. If the surface must remain unmarred, select a smooth-jaw tool designed for that purpose or protect the workpiece with an appropriate interface and confirm that the added thickness still allows a secure grip.
Job-by-job recommendations
Holding a part while you work elsewhere
Start with locking pliers when the defining requirement is “stay closed.” Set the adjustment so the jaws clamp firmly without crushing thin stock. The straight-jaw style suits broad flats; a curved jaw can seat more securely around pipe or a mixed profile. Check that the tool is not positioned where its release lever could be struck accidentally.
Turning a pipe, sleeve, or irregular fitting
Start with tongue-and-groove pliers when the opening must change repeatedly. Select a joint position that lets the jaws contact the work without forcing the handles to their extreme spread. Seat the teeth squarely on the part and pull in a direction that keeps the jaws engaged rather than twisting them sideways.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWorking on nuts and bolts
Use the correctly sized wrench whenever a wrench can do the job; it applies force to the flats without serrated teeth. If you need pliers, distinguish the choices: tongue-and-groove pliers are useful for changing sizes and rough service, while a pliers wrench offers smooth, parallel jaws for finished fittings. Locking pliers can hold a damaged or irregular fastener, but their teeth and concentrated force may mark it.
Gripping flat, square, or hex stock
A straight-jaw locking plier is the appropriate locking profile for broad flat, square, or hex surfaces. Adjust the screw so the jaws meet evenly rather than touching at one corner. If the workpiece is too large for the model, changing to a different jaw profile or larger capacity is safer than over-tightening.
Gripping round pipe while maintaining a fixed hold
Choose a curved-jaw locking plier when the pipe must stay held after you let go. Choose a water-pump plier when you need to reposition frequently along the pipe or move between several diameters. Neither choice removes the need to match the tool’s rated opening and to account for surface damage on soft finishes.

For any purchase, read the individual model’s jaw-opening, pipe-capacity, and nut-capacity specifications. A nominal tool length does not by itself tell you whether the jaws will reach your workpiece.
A practical selection procedure
- Describe the workpiece. Note whether it is flat, square, hexagonal, round, angled, thin, soft, plated, or already damaged.
- Decide whether the tool must stay closed. If you need to release your hands and leave the part held, begin with locking pliers. If you will keep squeezing while turning, adjustable pliers may be more convenient.
- Choose the jaw profile. Use straight locking jaws for broad flats and square or hex surfaces; use curved locking jaws for round or mixed profiles; use tongue-and-groove jaws when rapid size changes are central to the job.
- Check the actual capacity. Compare the manufacturer’s maximum opening or pipe/nut capacity with the measured workpiece. Use the named model’s specification, not a category-wide assumption.
- Evaluate marking risk. Serrated teeth and high clamping pressure can damage soft or finished surfaces. A smooth-jaw pliers wrench or wrench may be the better starting point for visible fittings.
- Plan the motion. Align the jaws with the work and choose a handle direction that gives you room to pull without slipping into nearby edges or moving parts.
- Test the grip before applying force. Confirm that both jaws contact securely and that the tool is not sitting on a corner. Reposition rather than compensating for poor contact by applying more force.
Using locking pliers safely and consistently
Set pressure for the material
Turn the adjustment screw in small increments. Thin tubing, sheet metal, and soft finishes can deform under excessive pressure even when the jaws are correctly positioned. The goal is a stable hold, not the maximum possible squeeze.
Keep the release accessible
Orient the tool so the release lever can be reached deliberately. Avoid placing it against a surface that could press the lever and open the jaws. When the task is complete, release the tool rather than striking the handles or twisting the adjustment screw under load.
Do not infer strength from marketing language
Manufacturers describe locking pliers with phrases such as “bite and hold,” but those descriptions are feature statements, not independent head-to-head test results. The available product material does not establish that all locking pliers outperform all adjustable pliers in strength, durability, or safety. Select based on the workpiece, jaw fit, and required holding action.

Set the joint before gripping
Open the jaws, move the tongue-and-groove joint to a position that leaves a manageable handle spread, and then seat the jaws fully on the workpiece. A setting that is too wide encourages the tool to rock; one that is too narrow may place the handles so close that you cannot generate controlled leverage.

Pull in the direction of the jaw bite
Keep the jaws aligned with the pipe, nut, or fitting. Side-loading or twisting the pliers can make the teeth climb out of the work and damage the surface. If the part will not move with controlled force, stop and reassess the size, direction, and tool type instead of escalating pressure.
Reposition for every new size
When moving to a different pipe or nut, release the handles and select a new joint position. Do not force a near-limit opening simply because the jaws can reach the edge. The manufacturer’s stated capacity is the model’s limit, not a target for routine use.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling every adjustable tool “adjustable pliers.” Correction: identify tongue-and-groove pliers, a pliers wrench, or an adjustable wrench by its joint and jaw surface.
- Expecting tongue-and-groove pliers to hold themselves. Correction: use locking pliers when the work must remain clamped without hand pressure.
- Using locking pliers for every size change. Correction: switch to a water-pump design when you are repeatedly moving between different diameters.
- Using toothed jaws on a finished fitting. Correction: choose a smooth-jaw pliers wrench or a correctly sized wrench and verify its capacity.
- Assuming a familiar brand name guarantees a fit. Correction: check the exact model’s opening, pipe, and nut specifications.
- Over-tightening to compensate for poor jaw contact. Correction: change the jaw profile or reposition the tool so both jaws seat evenly.
Are vice grips and adjustable pliers interchangeable?
No. They overlap as general-purpose gripping tools, but their operating methods answer different needs. Locking pliers apply a set pressure and remain closed. Adjustable water-pump or tongue-and-groove pliers change size quickly but require continuing hand force. A pliers wrench and an adjustable wrench solve still different fastener problems.
Choose the tool that matches the action you need: lock and hold points to locking pliers; adjust and turn points to water-pump pliers; turn without tooth marks points to a smooth-jaw wrench design.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited manufacturer pages establish design features, adjustment methods, jaw profiles, and model specifications. They do not provide an independent, controlled comparison of holding force, durability, surface damage, or user safety across the two categories. Treat the figures and feature descriptions as product information for the named models, not as proof of a universal category winner.
For a real job, the most reliable decision is therefore mechanical: identify the workpiece shape and finish, determine whether the tool must lock, measure the required opening, and select the jaw style that gives stable contact without exceeding the model’s capacity.
