Choose locking pliers by the workpiece’s measured size and shape, the access and reach you need, and the jaw style—not by handle length alone. A tool labeled 7 or 10 inches gives you a nominal size, but only the specific model’s jaw-opening specification tells you whether it can grip your workpiece. For mixed jobs, a set such as 5CR, 7CR, and 10CR covers three nominal lengths; for specialized access, long-nose, straight-jaw, or clamp-style models may be more suitable than a larger curved jaw.
What the size number on locking pliers actually means
The number in a locking-plier name normally refers to the tool’s approximate overall length, measured from the back of the handles to the front of the jaws. It is a convenient way to distinguish compact, medium, and larger tools, but it is not a universal jaw-capacity rating. Two tools with the same nominal length can have different jaw shapes, throat depths, and maximum openings.

That distinction matters because the job is determined by the workpiece, not the handle. A 10-inch curved-jaw tool may offer useful leverage and a broad contact shape, while a 10-inch long-nose tool uses its length to reach into a narrow area. Their ability to clamp a particular object can therefore differ. The official product pages and catalog material available for these examples list model sizes and jaw types, but do not provide a complete, apples-to-apples jaw-opening chart.
Use the length as a first sorting clue, then verify the exact model’s capacity in its current specification. If a listing does not state jaw opening, throat depth, or an equivalent capacity measurement, do not infer that capacity from the 5-, 7-, 10-, or 12-inch label.

How to choose a size step by step
1. Measure the workpiece and identify the task
Start by writing down what the pliers must do: hold a part while you drill, clamp two pieces, turn a stubborn fastener, twist material, or act as a temporary clamp. Measure the outside dimension at the point where the jaws will contact it. For an irregular object, measure the widest section the jaws must pass over, not just the narrow point where you hope to grip.
Also note whether the tool must approach from the side, from above, or through an opening. A jaw that can span the object on a workbench may be impossible to position when a panel, bracket, or adjacent fastener blocks the handles.
2. Check the model-specific jaw capacity
Compare your measurement with the manufacturer’s capacity for the exact model code. The sources for the examples in this guide do not establish a universal rule such as “a 7-inch pair fits a certain pipe diameter.” Capacity varies with jaw geometry, adjustment range, and the shape of the contact surfaces.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Look for a maximum jaw opening, throat depth, or a dimensional drawing in the product listing or manual.
- Confirm whether the stated capacity applies to a round object, flat stock, or another specific shape.
- Leave enough adjustment range to lock the jaws firmly without forcing the screw or handles.
- If no capacity is published, contact the manufacturer or choose a model with a documented specification rather than guessing from length.
3. Select the jaw geometry
Choose the jaw shape that gives stable contact and the access your task requires. Curved jaws wrap around rounded or irregular material. Straight jaws present flatter faces for stock with parallel sides. Long-nose jaws extend into narrow or recessed areas. Clamp-style forms are designed around a broader, more clamp-like contact pattern.
4. Use overall length as a handling constraint
A longer tool can be harder to maneuver in a confined space, while a shorter tool can run out of opening or provide less room for your hands. These are practical selection considerations, not comparative test measurements. If the work area is tight, first confirm that the handles can close without striking nearby parts; if the object is large, first confirm the model’s stated jaw capacity.
5. Decide whether one tool is enough
For one recurring operation, buy the specific jaw style and size that match that operation. If your work varies between small hardware, medium stock, and larger assemblies, a set can be more efficient than trying to make one pair cover every shape. Compare the actual model codes in a set, because “three-piece” or “seven-piece” does not tell you which jaw forms are included.

Jaw styles and when each one makes sense
Curved jaw
Curved jaws are the general-purpose choice when the workpiece is round, irregular, or has multiple possible contact angles. IRWIN describes its 10-inch Original curved-jaw model as suitable for a wide variety of material shapes, with hardened teeth intended to grip from any angle. That wording is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent performance test.
Recommended Free Tools
Milwaukee’s hand-tool catalog describes curved jaws as maximizing pressure points. In practical terms, the curved profile can provide several contact areas around a rounded object instead of touching only two flat edges. You still need to verify the opening for your particular model and workpiece.
Straight jaw
Straight jaws are listed as a separate category in manufacturer catalogs. Their flatter faces are a logical match for flat bar, sheet, or other work with parallel surfaces. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal capacity or a rule that a straight jaw is always superior for a particular thickness, so judge the fit from the model’s dimensions and your access angle.
Long nose
Milwaukee identifies long-nose models for long-reach applications. The extended nose can reach around an obstruction or into a recess where a broad curved jaw cannot enter. The trade-off is that the narrow nose presents a different contact pattern; check that it can seat securely on the workpiece rather than touching only an edge.
Clamp-style and large-jaw forms
Catalogs also list clamp-style and large-jaw locking pliers as distinct forms. These can be useful when you need a wider contact area or a clamp arrangement rather than a conventional rounded jaw. Because the sources do not provide a single cross-brand capacity table, compare the manufacturer’s drawings and opening specification for the exact model.

| Nominal length | What it indicates | What it does not prove | Best way to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 inches | A compact overall tool size, often useful where handle clearance is limited. | A guaranteed jaw opening or a specific workpiece diameter. | Check the model’s opening and confirm that your hand can operate the handles in the available space. |
| 7 inches | A mid-size option that may balance reach and maneuverability. | That it will fit every medium-sized nut, pipe, or plate. | Match the published capacity and jaw profile to the measured contact area. |
| 10 inches | A common larger format with more handle length than compact models. | That every 10-inch model has the same opening, reach, or leverage. | Compare the exact jaw style, throat depth, opening, and release mechanism. |
| 12 inches | A larger nominal format available in some locking-plier assortments. | That it is appropriate for a large object if the jaws cannot reach or seat correctly. | Verify the model-specific dimensions and ensure the handles have room to close. |
The table is a sizing framework, not a capacity chart. The reviewed official material does not establish a complete size-to-opening conversion, so any recommendation that links a nominal length to a particular pipe, nut, or diameter without a model specification would be guesswork.

Documented product examples and set contents
The following examples show how manufacturers group nominal sizes and jaw styles. They are not independent test winners, universal recommendations, price claims, or assurances of current stock.
| Product example | Listed contents or configuration | Useful buying lesson |
|---|---|---|
| IRWIN VISE-GRIP Original 502L3 | 10-inch curved-jaw locking pliers with a built-in wire cutter; an adjustment screw changes clamping pressure. | A 10-inch curved jaw is a concrete general-purpose example, but its capacity must still be checked for the job. |
| IRWIN VISE-GRIP Original 3 PC Tray Set 4935580 | 5CR, 7CR, and 10CR models. | A three-size assortment covers three nominal lengths while keeping the same broad curved-jaw family. |
| IRWIN VISE-GRIP Original 7PC Kit Bag Set 757KB | 12LC, 10LW, 10CR, 7LW, 7R, 6LN, and 5CR. | The value of an assortment is its mix of jaw forms and lengths, not merely the seven-tool count. |
| IRWIN Fast Release 2 PC Set IRHT82590 | 7WR and 10WR models with curved jaws; the manufacturer describes one-handed, triggerless release. | Release mechanism is a separate buying axis from size. A fast-release feature does not change the need to verify capacity. |
IRWIN’s pliers catalog groups curved-jaw, straight-jaw, long-nose, and other forms as separate product types. Milwaukee’s October 2018 hand-tool catalog likewise distinguishes jaw styles and cataloged sizes. These classifications help you narrow the search; they do not replace the dimensions for the individual model.
One pair or a set?
Choose one pair when the task is predictable
A single pair makes sense when you repeatedly perform the same operation and can identify the required jaw shape and capacity. For example, a technician who always needs a curved jaw in a particular access space can focus on that model’s dimensions instead of storing unused formats. Confirm whether a built-in cutter or a particular release style is actually useful before paying for it.
Choose a three-size set for varied ordinary work
The 5CR/7CR/10CR assortment is an example of a simple size progression. It gives you compact, mid-size, and larger nominal lengths within one product family. The set does not establish that every job will be covered: you still need to compare each model’s opening and make sure a curved jaw is appropriate for your work.
Choose a broader set when access and shapes vary
The seven-piece 757KB assortment includes long-nose, straight or wide-jaw forms, curved-jaw models, and a 12-inch clamp-style model, according to its listed contents. Such a mix can be more useful than several copies of one jaw shape if your projects involve recessed fasteners, flat stock, and irregular parts. Inventory the individual model codes before purchase so you know which specialized form you are getting.
Consider release mechanism separately
Traditional locking pliers use their standard release action; the Fast Release set is marketed with one-handed, triggerless release. That feature affects how quickly you can remove the tool, not how large a workpiece the jaws can hold. Treat release style, jaw geometry, and nominal length as separate comparison columns.

A practical comparison checklist
When two candidate pairs appear similar, compare them in this order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Capacity: Does the exact model list an opening or dimensional range that covers your measured workpiece?
- Contact shape: Will curved, straight, long-nose, or clamp-style jaws sit on enough surface to hold securely?
- Access: Can the nose reach the work and can the handles close without hitting nearby parts?
- Length: Is the overall size manageable in the workspace and suitable for your hand position?
- Adjustment: Does the screw or other adjustment provide the fine fit you need without forcing the mechanism?
- Release: Would a conventional release or a one-handed triggerless design be more practical for your workflow?
- Set composition: If buying multiple tools, are the included model codes and jaw types genuinely different and useful?
This order prevents a common mistake: choosing the longest handle first and discovering later that the jaws cannot approach or properly contact the workpiece.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a listing before buying
Read the model page, not just the category title
Category pages often group several lengths and jaw styles together. Open the individual product page and record the model code, nominal length, jaw type, release design, and any dimensional drawing. The 10-inch label by itself is not enough to compare two products.
Check the set’s contents line by line
For a kit, copy every included code into your notes. A set may combine 5CR, 7CR, and 10CR curved-jaw tools, or it may add 6LN, 7R, 7LW, 10LW, and 12LC forms. Tool count without model names hides those differences.
Confirm current details with the manufacturer
Listings, packaging, and regional pages can change. Before ordering, verify that the model is still offered in your region and that the capacity information applies to the current version. The examples here are manufacturer-listed configurations; no current retailer price, stock status, or user-tested performance is established.
Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating length as jaw opening
Correction: Measure the workpiece and locate the exact model’s capacity. If the capacity is absent, do not make a diameter claim from the nominal length.

Mistake: selecting the biggest pair automatically
Correction: Check handle clearance and jaw access first. A larger tool can be awkward in a confined area, and extra length does not compensate for a jaw that cannot seat correctly.
Mistake: ignoring jaw shape
Correction: Match the contact profile to the material. A long nose may solve a reach problem; a curved jaw may better surround an irregular object; a straight jaw may present flatter contact for flat stock.
Mistake: buying a set by piece count alone
Correction: Review every model code and jaw form. A seven-piece set with several specialized shapes can cover more situations than a larger number of near-identical pairs, but only if those shapes match your work.
Mistake: assuming a release feature changes capacity
Correction: Evaluate fast release as a handling feature. Capacity and fit still come from the jaw design and model dimensions.
A quick decision path
- One object, one repeated task: select the jaw style that contacts it best, then choose the smallest model whose documented capacity covers it and whose handles clear the workspace.
- Several objects of different sizes: compare a 5CR/7CR/10CR-style progression, checking each model’s capacity rather than assuming the progression covers every diameter.
- Recessed or obstructed access: investigate long-nose models and confirm reach, nose clearance, and contact stability.
- Flat or broad clamping: compare straight-jaw, wide-jaw, or clamp-style models with dimensional drawings for the workpiece.
- Frequent removal and re-clamping: compare conventional and Fast Release mechanisms independently of size.
- Unclear specification: pause the purchase and obtain the manufacturer’s model-level capacity; do not substitute the nominal length.
What the available specifications do—and do not—establish
The documented material establishes product examples, nominal lengths, model codes, jaw categories, and the stated release feature for the listed sets. It does not provide a comprehensive table mapping every nominal length to a maximum jaw opening, nor does it provide independent statistics, laboratory comparisons, current prices, retailer availability, or user-tested performance.
That limitation does not prevent a sound purchase decision. It changes the decision method: measure the workpiece, choose the contact geometry and access profile, and verify the exact model’s capacity before relying on it.
Bottom line for choosing your pair
Start with the workpiece and access, not the number printed in the product name. Use 5, 7, 10, or 12 inches to narrow the field, then choose curved, straight, long-nose, or clamp-style jaws according to the contact problem. A 10-inch curved-jaw model is a common example, while a 5CR/7CR/10CR set offers a straightforward range and a broader seven-piece assortment adds specialized forms. In every case, the decisive check is the manufacturer’s capacity for the exact model.
