Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse an AI coder as a fast, reviewable contributor—not as the owner of your codebase. Give it a small task, current project context, and testable acceptance criteria; ask for a plan before broad changes; inspect every diff and command; run your own tests and security checks; and keep the merge decision with a human who understands the system. Plausible code, passing syntax checks, and an AI-generated review are all evidence to evaluate, not proof of correctness.
What “vibecoding” gets right—and where it fails
“Vibecoding” is informal slang, not a standardized engineering method. In practice, it describes using an AI coding assistant or repository agent to turn a natural-language idea into code with relatively little manual typing. That can shorten the path from a hypothesis to a working prototype. It can also produce a codebase that looks coherent one file at a time while violating its architecture, security assumptions, or operational requirements.

The central risk is a mismatch between local plausibility and system correctness. An inline suggestion sees nearby code and patterns; it may not know a data-retention rule in another service, a compatibility promise in a public API, or a deployment constraint documented elsewhere. Chat can explain a function or draft tests, but its explanation can be incomplete or wrong. An agent can edit many files quickly, yet still misunderstand what “done” means unless you define it.
The safe operating model is supervised delegation:
- You choose the outcome, scope, constraints, and risk level.
- The assistant proposes code, tests, explanations, or commands.
- You verify behavior against requirements and the existing architecture.
- Automated tests and security tooling provide independent checks.
- A human decides whether the change belongs in the repository.
GitHub’s responsible-use guidance makes the same point for Copilot Chat: “You should always review and test the code generated by Copilot Chat to ensure that it meets your requirements and is free of errors or security concerns.” GitHub Docs

Pick the least-autonomous mode that fits the task
More autonomy is useful only when the task is sufficiently specified and the resulting work remains easy to inspect. Choose by scope and reversibility, not by which mode sounds most advanced.
| Mode | Best use | Questions to ask before using it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inline completion | Small edits while you are actively coding: a branch, a repetitive mapping, or a short helper. | Is the change local? Can you read and reject each suggestion immediately? Do you know the required behavior? | It relies heavily on nearby context and may miss broader design or architecture problems. GitHub’s inline-suggestion guidance |
| Chat | Explaining unfamiliar code, proposing a focused refactor, identifying edge cases, or drafting unit tests. | Have you supplied the relevant files and constraints? How will you verify the explanation or generated test? | Answers and code can be inaccurate, incomplete, or based on stale or insufficient context. GitHub’s Chat guidance |
| Repository coding agent | A bounded issue that may touch several files and has explicit tests or validation commands. | Are acceptance criteria observable? Are the files, commands, and permissions reviewable? Can the work be reverted cleanly? | Agents have limited scope and may misunderstand intent; commands and broad edits require review. GitHub’s agent guidance |
Keep high-impact or difficult-to-reverse work—authentication changes, authorization rules, migrations, payment logic, destructive maintenance, and public API changes—under tighter human control. An agent may still help explain code or draft a test, but you should break implementation into small, independently reviewable changes.
1. Turn an idea into a bounded task
“Improve the checkout” is a conversation starter, not an executable assignment. A useful task states the problem, affected behavior, constraints, and a way to prove completion. GitHub recommends clear, well-scoped tasks for repository agents and notes that project instructions can help an agent understand how to build, test, and validate a change. GitHub Docs

Describe what a user, API consumer, operator, or test should observe. For example: “When an authenticated user requests an expired download link, return HTTP 410, do not reveal the storage key, and record an audit event.” This is more useful than “fix download security” because it defines both success and a security boundary.
Set explicit non-goals
Tell the agent what not to change: “Do not alter database schema, public response fields, retry policy, or unrelated formatting.” Non-goals reduce opportunistic refactors that make a diff harder to reason about.
Identify acceptance criteria
- Specify normal, boundary, and failure cases.
- Name expected status codes, error types, side effects, and compatibility requirements.
- State the tests or checks that must pass.
- Define performance or resource limits when they matter.
- Require documentation or migration notes if operators or users need them.
Point to likely context
List the relevant modules, interfaces, configuration files, and existing tests. A pointer is not permission to edit everything nearby; it tells the agent where to start looking and gives you a review boundary.

2. Supply current, selective context
Context quality matters more than context volume. Include the conventions and code that govern the change, but remove stale design notes, superseded instructions, and unrelated files. GitHub’s Chat guidance recommends selective, current context because unnecessary or outdated material can dilute or misdirect an answer. GitHub Docs
Useful context to include
- The relevant interfaces, data models, and call sites.
- Repository instructions covering style, testing, generated files, and supported runtime versions.
- Existing tests that demonstrate the intended behavior.
- Error-handling, logging, privacy, and authorization conventions.
- Deployment, migration, or backwards-compatibility constraints.
Context to withhold or refresh
- Secrets, tokens, private keys, production data, and unnecessary personal information.
- Old tickets that describe behavior the current system no longer supports.
- Large directories unrelated to the task.
- Generated output when the source that produces it is available.
After supplying context, ask the assistant to list assumptions. Treat every assumption as a question for you to answer, not as an invisible design decision.
3. Ask for a plan before broad implementation
For a change crossing modules, request a short plan first. The plan should name files, data flow, interfaces, failure paths, tests, and any migration or rollout concern. This is a review aid, not a guarantee: an agent can produce a convincing plan and still implement it incorrectly.
What to approve in the plan
- The proposed design fits existing boundaries rather than introducing a parallel abstraction.
- Each acceptance criterion maps to an implementation and a test.
- Error and timeout behavior is explicit.
- Security-sensitive inputs are validated at the correct boundary.
- The change can be split into commits that are easy to revert.
What should trigger a pause
- A new framework, service, dependency, or configuration system without a stated need.
- Duplicated business logic instead of reuse of an existing domain function.
- Broad formatting or renaming mixed with behavioral changes.
- “Temporary” bypasses for authentication, validation, tests, or error handling.
- Commands that delete files, rewrite history, reset branches, or modify production resources.
Inline completion is particularly unsuitable for detecting system-level problems because it works from local context. GitHub’s guidance cautions that a correct-looking local suggestion can still be a poor architectural change.
4. Constrain the agent while it works
Give the agent the smallest permissions and workspace it needs. Prefer a branch or disposable worktree, and keep unrelated uncommitted changes out of its way. Require it to show commands before running those that modify or delete files. GitHub specifically advises reviewing agent commands, particularly destructive ones. GitHub Docs
Use checkpoints
- Have the agent inspect the relevant files and report its understanding.
- Approve the plan and file list.
- Ask it to implement one logical slice.
- Review the diff before allowing the next slice.
- Run focused tests, then broaden validation.
Do not let a long autonomous session turn uncertainty into dozens of coupled edits. A small checkpoint gives you a cheap exit when the approach is wrong.
Keep generated artifacts honest
If the project contains generated clients, schemas, migrations, or lockfiles, tell the agent which files are authoritative and which commands regenerate them. Review generated changes for accidental version bumps or environment-specific output.

5. Review the diff as the accountable developer
Read the patch, not just the assistant’s summary. Review in two passes: first for whether the behavior is right, then for whether the implementation belongs in this architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
Behavior pass
- Does every acceptance criterion have a corresponding change?
- What happens for empty, malformed, duplicate, delayed, and unauthorized inputs?
- Are return values, status codes, events, and logs correct?
- Does the code preserve existing compatibility and data invariants?
- Do tests assert outcomes rather than merely exercising lines the agent added?
Design and maintenance pass
- Does the change use established interfaces and naming conventions?
- Did it add abstraction, indirection, or duplication without a clear payoff?
- Are responsibilities split at sensible boundaries?
- Will a future developer know why the unusual logic exists?
- Are comments explaining decisions rather than repeating code?
- Did formatting churn hide a meaningful behavior change?
Check dependencies and error paths manually. AI-generated code often handles the happy path while silently changing retry behavior, swallowing exceptions, leaking details in errors, or making an expensive call inside a loop.
6. Validate behavior independently
Run the project’s normal checks yourself or through a trusted CI system. A syntax check proves only that a parser accepted the code. A passing test suite proves only what those tests cover. Verify that tests represent the requirement and include adversarial cases.
Layered validation
- Fast checks: formatter, linter, type checker, and focused unit tests.
- Behavior checks: integration, contract, API, or end-to-end tests for affected boundaries.
- Regression checks: the full suite and compatibility checks when shared code changed.
- Operational checks: migration rehearsal, startup, configuration validation, performance budgets, and rollback procedure where relevant.
- Security checks: ordinary secure-coding review and the team’s dependency, static-analysis, secret-scanning, and dynamic tests as appropriate.
Generated code may appear valid while being syntactically or semantically wrong, failing to reflect your intent, or containing vulnerabilities. GitHub describes these limitations in its guidance for Chat, inline suggestions, and agents: Chat, inline suggestions, and agents.
Test the requirement, not the implementation
If the agent creates a test that mocks every internal function, it may pass while the user-visible behavior is broken. Add at least one test at the boundary where the requirement is observed. Keep a test that would fail if the implementation were replaced by a different, correct design.
Security review questions
- Can an untrusted value reach a query, command, template, path, or network request without the project’s normal validation?
- Did the patch weaken authentication, authorization, rate limits, encryption, or tenant isolation?
- Could logs, errors, metrics, or prompts expose secrets or personal data?
- Did a dependency or configuration change expand the attack surface?
- Are failure modes fail-closed where the threat model requires it?
7. Keep the merge gate human-owned
An AI review can suggest possible defects, but it does not transfer accountability. Verify each finding, and do not treat an empty AI review as an approval. GitHub says Copilot code review should supplement human review; its Autofix suggestions are proposed changes that require explicit developer review and acceptance. GitHub Docs
Use a normal pull-request gate: an owner who understands the affected system, required CI checks, security review for sensitive changes, and a written decision on unresolved trade-offs. If you cannot explain the change without asking the assistant to explain its own output, you are not ready to merge it.

Common failure modes and recovery
The “almost right” patch
Symptom: The feature works in a demo but fails on an edge case or integration boundary.
Recovery: Add a failing test that expresses the missing behavior, give the agent only that failure and relevant context, then review the smallest resulting diff. Do not ask for a broad rewrite.
Architecture drift
Symptom: A new service, helper layer, or data model duplicates an existing responsibility.
Recovery: Stop implementation, identify the authoritative interface, and ask for a plan that reuses it. Remove speculative abstractions before adding more code.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Context contamination
Symptom: The assistant follows obsolete instructions or invents APIs that do not exist.
Recovery: Replace stale context with current interfaces, tests, and project rules. Ask it to list assumptions and cite the file that supports each one.
Test theater
Symptom: Coverage rises, but tests assert mocks, snapshots, or implementation details rather than outcomes.
Recovery: Retain only tests that would catch a real regression; add boundary and failure tests tied to acceptance criteria.
Destructive automation
Symptom: The agent proposes a reset, mass deletion, migration, or broad rewrite to make checks pass.
Recovery: Reject the command, create a backup or disposable branch, and require a reversible, narrow operation. Review every file change afterward.
Security confidence from a green check
Symptom: A scanner or AI reviewer reports no issue, so the team skips threat-focused review.
Recovery: Revisit trust boundaries, authorization, input handling, secrets, and failure behavior manually. Tool output is a signal, not a proof.
A practical operating loop
For recurring work, use the same loop so speed does not depend on memory:

- Frame: write the problem, non-goals, context, acceptance criteria, and risk level.
- Plan: ask for files, design, assumptions, tests, and commands before broad edits.
- Implement: allow one bounded slice at a time in an isolated branch or worktree.
- Inspect: read the diff, dependency changes, generated files, and command output.
- Prove: run focused tests, full relevant checks, and security validation.
- Decide: merge, request a specific revision, or discard the work. Record why.
When a change fails review twice for the same conceptual reason, stop prompting and redesign the task. More detailed wording cannot compensate for an incorrect boundary or missing product decision.
What GitHub’s evaluation evidence does—and does not—show
GitHub documents a validation harness for its security and code-quality AI features that uses more than 2,300 alerts from public repositories with test coverage. This is GitHub’s description of an internal evaluation setup, documented in its current guidance accessed in 2026; it is not a general success rate for AI coding and does not establish that a suggestion is safe or suitable for your repository. GitHub’s security and code-quality guidance
Use vendor evaluations to understand how a feature is intended to be checked, then apply your own repository’s tests, threat model, architecture rules, and review process. No aggregate figure can replace evidence about the particular change you are about to merge.

Build design judgment alongside prompting skill
AI can produce more code than you can safely absorb if your design vocabulary is weak. A useful general background book is John Ousterhout’s A Philosophy of Software Design, 2nd Edition, released in July 2021. It focuses on decomposition and managing complexity, not on AI coding specifically. Stanford describes the edition and formats here: Software Design Book; bibliographic information is also available from Google Books.
The practical lesson is to judge AI output by the same design standards as human output: clear responsibilities, small interfaces, controlled complexity, explicit invariants, and behavior that can be tested. Better prompting helps the tool follow those standards; it does not remove the need to know them.
A final pre-merge checklist
- The task has a specific outcome, non-goals, relevant context, and acceptance criteria.
- The agent’s assumptions and proposed files were reviewed before broad implementation.
- No secret, private data, or unnecessary repository material was supplied.
- Every changed file and dependency is understood, including generated output.
- Destructive or repository-wide commands were approved before execution.
- Tests cover normal, boundary, failure, and security-relevant behavior.
- The project’s required lint, type, integration, regression, and security checks pass.
- The implementation follows existing architecture and does not add unexplained duplication.
- Human reviewers verified the diff and AI review findings independently.
- A rollback or migration plan exists when the change can affect data or operations.
That discipline turns AI coding from “accept whatever looks plausible” into a controlled engineering process: delegate typing and exploration, retain decisions and accountability.
