That is a forecast, not a proven industry-wide shift. The AI Journal article presenting the argument is labeled a press release, and vendor descriptions show how companies position their tools—not that this approach reliably outperforms prompt engineering.
What “vibe direction” means in practice
“Vibe direction” and “vibe directing” are emerging vendor terms, not established technical standards. In plain language, they describe a workflow in which a person supplies the goal, mood, story, and visual judgment, while an AI system generates candidate footage. The creator then reviews the result, gives follow-up notes, and decides which choices to preserve.

OpenArt describes making AI video by explaining what you want and shaping the result with notes; AKOOL presents a similar idea as conversational steering over multiple turns. Those descriptions point to a shared pattern, but they do not establish that every tool supports the same controls or responds to direction in the same way. OpenArt’s explanation and AKOOL’s explanation are vendor material.

How direction and prompting fit together
Prompting is one way to express the initial intent. Direction includes the decisions that follow: assessing whether the generated footage matches that intent, identifying what should change, and distinguishing it from elements that should remain. They are complementary parts of a workflow, not mutually exclusive skills. Nothing in the available evidence shows that prompt writing has become obsolete.

A simple iterative example
- Describe the intention. Set out a scene, its emotional tone, and the visual qualities you want.
- Review the generated clip. Identify what already works and the specific mismatch you want to correct.
- Give a focused note. For example, ask for different lighting while keeping the same character and scene.
- Check the revision. Decide whether it follows the note and preserves the useful choices, then refine again or keep the result.
This illustrates the workflow described by vendors; it is not a guarantee that a system will reliably preserve every requested element. The practical value of a follow-up note depends on the controls a product provides and how consistently it handles revisions.
What to check when evaluating an AI video tool
Feature names alone do not show how much control a creator actually gets. Look at the workflow and the evidence behind the claims:

- Follow-up notes: Can you continue directing after a clip is generated, and does the interface make revisions understandable?
- Targeted refinement: Can you refine a particular shot or scene, or does a change require regenerating a broader sequence?
- Continuity: How does the product handle recurring characters, scenes, and props across shots?
- Demonstrated control: Do product examples or documentation show the result of a specific direction, rather than simply asserting that the tool offers it?
These are comparison criteria, not a ranking. Product behavior can change, so check the current interface and documentation before relying on a capability.

These are descriptions of product positioning and workflow, not independent proof that the approach improves creative quality or that all of those controls work consistently in every use case. The cited study records do not establish a broad shift in creative work. A search record for a CVPR 2026 paper reports 1,255 paired comparisons per temperature in a study of Vibe Spaces; an arXiv search record describes experiments involving 168 prompts. These figures describe study designs, not adoption rates, employment changes, or evidence that vibe direction produces better video than prompt engineering. The CVPR 2026 proceedings record and the arXiv record do not support that larger conclusion on the information available here.

It may become more valuable as tools make generation easier, because creators still need to decide what a scene should communicate and whether a result fits. But that is a plausible forecast, not a measured general rule. Vendor explanations show how companies frame a workflow; they do not demonstrate that direction consistently beats prompt engineering, or that the two can be separated in practice.
