Viata is a Seattle travel-tech startup that began by helping travelers choose hotels based on an entire itinerary—not just price or distance from one landmark. Founded in 2023 by University of Washington professor Cecilia Aragon and her son Ken Aragon, the company launched a consumer trip-mapping product in December 2024. Its current public positioning, however, emphasizes interactive travel maps for conferences, weddings and group trips.
The problem Viata is trying to solve
Most hotel-search sites rank properties by room price, reviews, availability, amenities and proximity to a single destination. That approach breaks down when a trip includes several venues, attractions, restaurants or meetings.

A cheaper hotel can create higher transportation costs and longer journeys if it is far from most of the itinerary. Viata’s original proposition was to optimize the hotel’s position within the trip rather than rank rooms only by nightly price. The company describes this as exposing the hidden transportation cost and inconvenience of a poor location.

That does not mean Viata produces a guaranteed cheapest or objectively “best” hotel. It is a mapping and comparison workflow intended to make trade-offs visible.

Who founded Viata?
Ken Aragon
Ken Aragon is Viata’s co-founder and CEO. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Washington.
Cecilia Aragon, Ph.D.
Cecilia Aragon is co-founder and chief technologist and a professor in the University of Washington’s Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering. The family relationship is notable, but the product’s stronger distinction is its combination of academic visualization research and travel software.
Early team members identified in launch coverage included Chingiz Torobekov in product leadership and Eli Goldberg in engineering. Advisors included Dorine Rassaian, formerly a product and marketing leader at Expedia, and entrepreneur Ryan Lee. GeekWire’s launch report identifies these roles and the company’s origin.

How the original product worked
The December 2024 launch treated hotel selection as a multi-destination comparison problem:
- Enter the city for the trip.
- Add venues, attractions or other itinerary destinations.
- View hotel candidates on a map.
- Compare travel times between each hotel and those destinations.
- Switch among driving, public transportation, biking and walking.
- Continue to a booking partner when ready.
A traveler can perform similar checks manually with Google Maps, but would need to paste every hotel and destination into separate route searches. Viata’s proposed advantage was putting the hotel choices, itinerary points and transportation context into one visual workflow. The launch workflow and transportation modes were reported by GeekWire.
Where the technology came from
Viata grew out of visualization technology developed in Cecilia Aragon’s University of Washington laboratory. GeekWire reported that the work was covered by two patents and two publications, and that Viata was pursuing an exclusive license rather than already holding one. The company also received a $100,000 Washington Research Foundation grant to support commercialization, according to that report.

At launch, GeekWire reported approximately 500,000 properties worldwide. Ken Aragon’s launch post used the less precise description “hundreds of thousands of properties worldwide” and referred to partnerships with Vio.com and Expedia Group. These are historical launch figures, not a verified 2026 inventory count.
The original model was booking-related revenue sharing: GeekWire reported that Viata expected to earn money when users booked through partners such as Expedia or Hotels.com. That arrangement means readers should distinguish between a map display and the final booking terms, price and availability shown by the partner.

Viata’s shift toward event and group travel
The most important current change is the company’s public positioning. Viata’s LinkedIn page now describes interactive travel maps for event organizers, including conferences, weddings and personal group travel. A 2025 company announcement said users could create an interactive travel experience in less than two minutes, with a venue, nearby hotels and nearby activities.
That makes Viata look less like a conventional hotel-comparison site and more like an event-travel information layer. One organizer can distribute a shared map to many attendees, potentially solving repeated questions about where to stay, how to reach the venue and what is nearby. This is an analysis of the business opportunity, not a confirmed pricing or revenue model.
The company’s LinkedIn page currently lists Viata as a privately held software-development company headquartered in Seattle, founded in 2023, with a self-reported 2–10 employees. No public pricing for the event product was identified, so it should not be described as free, subscription-based or paid without confirmation.

When itinerary-aware hotel mapping is useful
- Conference attendees traveling between a main venue, restaurants and hotels.
- Wedding guests comparing properties around a ceremony or reception site.
- Families visiting several attractions or theme parks.
- Sports families attending tournaments at multiple facilities.
- Business travelers visiting more than one office.
- Travelers without cars who need transit and walking context.
- Organizers who want to give a group one shared lodging and activity map.
What Viata cannot guarantee
Travel times change
Traffic, road closures, transit delays, weather, event crowds, parking and time of day can all change an estimated journey. Treat map times as planning guidance, not a promise.
The cheapest room may still be the cheapest trip
A farther hotel can make sense when a traveler has a rental car, free parking, convenient transit, a large room-rate difference or an itinerary concentrated near that property.
Map distance is not route accessibility
Highways, rivers, limited crossings, steep terrain, airport or stadium security zones and transit barriers can make two apparently close locations difficult to connect. A calculated walking route does not prove wheelchair accessibility. Confirm accessible entrances, rooms and transportation directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBooking data changes
Rates, taxes, resort fees, cancellation terms and room inventory can change after a map is created. Check the final hotel or booking-partner page before paying.
Affiliate incentives need disclosure
If Viata earns commissions from bookings, partner inventory and links may be commercially selected. That does not establish biased rankings, but important options should be compared independently and the commercial relationship disclosed.
How Viata compares with common alternatives
| Option | Best for | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Viata | Event organizers and travelers comparing lodging around several destinations | Combines itinerary points, hotels and transportation context in a map; current public positioning is event-focused. |
| Google Maps plus a booking site | Free, flexible manual research | Usually requires checking each hotel against each destination separately. |
| Expedia | Broad inventory, conventional booking and packaged travel | Expedia’s Trip Matching uses a public Instagram Reel to suggest trips; it is a discovery feature, not Viata’s itinerary-centered hotel map. Expedia says it is currently optimized for the U.S. and Instagram. Expedia Trip Matching |
| Vio.com | Comparing hotel prices and suppliers | Primarily a hotel comparison and booking service, with price tracking and support claims, rather than an event logistics map. Vio.com and Vio’s explanation of its supplier model |
Questions that remain open
- Which hotel and booking partners are active now?
- Is the original consumer hotel-search workflow still publicly available?
- How current and comprehensive is the displayed inventory?
- Can organizers publish maps without sending attendees through a booking partner?
- Does the event product have per-event, subscription or enterprise pricing?
- How are route updates, accessibility information and changing hotel terms handled?
The available public material does not answer those questions. Viata should be treated as an evolving startup whose clearest current message is interactive event-travel mapping, while its 2024 launch established the underlying idea: hotel value depends on how well a property fits the whole journey.
