Vertical vs. Traditional Gaming Mice: Which Is Better for Comfort and Control?

For fast, precise play, a traditional gaming mouse is the safer starting point; for a more upright hand posture and comfort-led use, a vertical mouse may be worth trying. Neither shape is universally better. The 2015 study suggests a trade-off between forearm posture and pointing performance, but does not prove that vertical mice prevent injury or outperform standard gaming mice in competitive play.

What the evidence says about posture and control

In a 2015 study, Peter Johnson and Dan Odell had 12 participants complete standardized point-and-click tasks with a traditional flat mouse, an existing upright mouse, and three concept designs. The concept mice reduced forearm pronation compared with the flat mouse, but the fully vertical design produced the poorest pointing performance among the shapes tested. The authors concluded that increasing mouse height and angling the top case could improve wrist posture without negatively affecting performance in their task. The CDC-hosted study record describes these findings.

This was a small, task-based study—not a competitive gaming trial. Reduced pronation is a posture finding, not evidence that a mouse prevents wrist injury or pain. An angled ergonomic shape may offer a middle ground, but the study does not establish that any particular retail model delivers the same result.

How the shapes compare for gaming

Consideration Vertical mouse Traditional gaming mouse
Hand posture More upright, handshake-like grip; the 2015 study found reduced forearm pronation for vertical designs. Conventional palm-down grip; used as the flat-mouse comparison in the posture study.
Fast, precise control May take adaptation. A reviewer found fine control harder in fast-paced shooters with the Keychron M5. A reasonable starting point when rapid, precise aiming is the priority.
Comfort Some users may prefer the posture, but comfort depends on individual fit and is not guaranteed by the shape. May suit players who already find the grip comfortable and controlled.
Potential fit Worth considering for slower-paced games or mixed work and play when upright posture is a priority. Worth considering for fast shooters and other precision-heavy games.
Evidence for gaming performance Direct shape research used standardized pointing, not competitive gameplay. Served as a benchmark in posture research; direct competitive-game comparisons remain limited.

What gaming-specific research does—and does not—show

A 2023 study by Wang and colleagues tested 16 professional players using four mice that varied by connection type and weight. The wireless mouse had a lower error rate and a higher overall comfort rating in that study. The researchers compared 80 g and 87 g mice and found no statistically significant difference between those tested weights. The study offers context about connection and weight, but it did not compare vertical and traditional shapes. Its results cannot establish which shape is better for gaming.

Why specifications do not settle the choice

DPI and polling rate describe sensor settings and reporting capability; by themselves, they do not show whether a mouse is comfortable, easy to control, or suited to a particular game. For example, PC Gamer’s 2026 Keychron M5 assessment describes a vertical mouse with up to 30,000 DPI and 8 kHz polling. The reviewer found it comfortable and said it tracked well, but considered it less suitable for fast-paced shooters because fine control was harder than with a traditional hand-on-mouse position. That is product-review judgment, not a controlled esports comparison.

Razer lists its Pro Click V2 Vertical Edition as a six-button vertical mouse with a 71.7-degree angle, a Focus Pro 30K optical sensor, and up to eight programmable controls. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent proof of gaming performance or comfort for every hand.

Choose by your games, grip, and fit

Consider a traditional gaming mouse if

  • You play fast shooters or other games that demand rapid, precise aiming.
  • You already have a grip that feels comfortable and gives you reliable control.
  • You want the conventional shape as a starting point while prioritizing speed and precision.

Consider a vertical mouse if

  • You prefer an upright hand posture and are willing to see whether it suits your play.
  • Your gaming is slower-paced, or you want one mouse for both work and play.
  • The button placement, shape, and sensor behavior work for your hand and the games you actually play.

Try before you commit

When possible, compare shapes in a returnable setting. Use the grip and games you normally play, and pay attention to comfort, button reach, and whether you can make the precise movements your games require. A label, specification, or study result cannot substitute for your own fit and control experience.
