Aspect ratio and video size are not the same

Is 1080 × 1920 the right size?

For a platform-specific technical limit, check the instructions for the workflow you are using—especially when publishing through an API or creating an ad. The Instagram API reference, for example, gives its own frame-rate, duration, and file-size constraints; those belong to that API workflow, not automatically to in-app publishing.
Instagram Reels API limits are workflow-specific
Meta’s cited Reels publishing API reference lists a frame rate of 23–60 fps, a minimum duration of 3 seconds, a maximum duration of 15 minutes, and a maximum file size of 1 GB. These are specifications for the referenced API publishing flow. Make one vertical master without sacrificing framing
- Set the canvas to 9:16 when the intended placement is full-screen portrait video. This is supported as a recommendation in TikTok for Business creative guidance and the Instagram API reference; YouTube accepts vertical Shorts.
- Compose for the visible subject, not just the frame edges. Keep captions, faces, product details, and other essential elements clear of interface controls. TikTok’s creative guide and Meta’s Reels ad guidance both call attention to safe zones, but the cited sources do not establish one universal pixel margin for every placement.
- Preview in each destination before publishing. Interface overlays and display behavior differ, and the platform guidance covers distinct workflows rather than one shared specification.
- Export without adding decorative black bars for YouTube. YouTube’s player adapts to a video’s shape and the viewer’s device; YouTube Help advises, “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Shorts playback and thumbnails are separate considerations
Let YouTube adapt the player
A vertical 9:16 video may appear with padding in a desktop browser because the player adapts to the video and the viewer’s device. That is different from baking black bars into the file. YouTube advises against adding padding or bars directly to the video because they interfere with dynamic player adaptation.
Use the right shape for a custom Shorts thumbnail
A thumbnail is a separate asset from the video itself. YouTube recommends a 9:16 aspect ratio for custom Shorts thumbnails and gives 2160 × 3840 as its recommended thumbnail resolution. Common sizing and publishing mistakes
- Confusing ratio with resolution: 9:16 describes a shape; 1080 × 1920 is one pixel size with that shape.
- Assuming every platform has the same upload rules: the cited TikTok page is business creative guidance, the Instagram limits are for an API workflow, and YouTube’s cited Shorts guidance accepts square or vertical uploads.
- Putting essential text at the screen edge: interface controls can cover it. Review safe zones for the placement and preview the actual post or ad.
