What the FCC pause means
WDBJ7 reported on September 29, 2026, that the FCC had paused Verizon’s plan for further review. That is a report about the regulatory process, not confirmation that every customer’s service is permanently protected or that Verizon’s request has been finally decided. What replacements Verizon says may be available
Verizon lists fiber in some areas and a wireless replacement designed to retain a familiar home-phone experience using existing home phones. Verizon Business Support also mentions VoIP and other wireless options. These services are not available everywhere, and a product category alone does not establish that a particular household can get it or use all its existing equipment.

Verizon says customers may port their number to another Verizon service or to another provider. Ask how the transfer works and whether it can be completed before copper service changes; do not assume number portability means the replacement will have the same features or reliability.

Questions to answer before agreeing to a replacement
- Availability and timing: Is the replacement approved and available at your exact address, and what date—if any—applies to your account? Request the answer in writing.
- 911/E911: How does emergency calling work with the proposed service, and what address or location information is sent?
- Power outages: Does the service need household power? What backup equipment is included, how long does it operate under the provider’s stated conditions, and how is it maintained or replaced?
- Signal indoors: If the option uses a cellular network, test signal where the phone will sit—not only outdoors or elsewhere on the property.
- Existing equipment: Confirm compatibility for each handset and any medical alert, alarm, fax machine, or other device connected to the copper line. The cited sources do not establish compatibility for a particular device.
- Internet needs: Ask whether the voice service requires broadband and whether moving to the option would affect internet access currently carried over the copper connection.
- Installation and support: Ask who installs the replacement, what equipment is supplied, how to report a failure, and what happens during a transition if the replacement does not work as expected.
Do not treat a working dial tone as the only test of equivalence. A household that relies on a landline for emergencies, medical equipment, or its only internet connection needs answers about those specific uses before deciding whether a proposed service is adequate.
Why local reports raise a real availability concern
WDBJ7’s September 21, 2026, report described Genevieve Henderson, a 91-year-old customer who said she had to walk outside to get a cellular signal and relied on landline phones at home. The station also reported Cathy Stanley’s concern that her copper connection was her only internet service and that cable, fiber, and fixed wireless were not available at her home. They illustrate why a broad wireless-coverage claim cannot answer whether service works inside a particular home. If cellular reception is weak or no alternative broadband is offered at your address, tell Verizon specifically and ask what approved option it can provide there. Do not cancel or disconnect existing service based only on a general notice before the replacement and transition details are clear.

- Use the contact method shown on your notice or account and ask whether the notice is informational or tied to a change date for your specific line.
- Ask Verizon to identify each replacement available at your service address and confirm whether it is an FCC-approved option for purposes of the proposed copper discontinuance.
- Describe your actual requirements: number retention, indoor coverage, emergency calling, outage backup, internet access, and every connected device that must continue working.
- Request written confirmation of availability, installation steps, costs if any, support arrangements, and any date when copper service could change.
- If no workable approved replacement is available, state that clearly and ask Verizon to confirm in writing how its no-replacement policy applies to your account.
What is established—and what is not
