Before changing a Verizon plan, verify four things in My Verizon: you have authority to edit the account, you have recorded every line’s current plan and add-ons, no order is pending, and the confirmation screen shows the price, features, and effective date you expect. Verizon says changing a plan or allowance has no change fee, but the recurring access charge, taxes, surcharges, perks, international features, and promotion eligibility can change.
Use the checklist below before you tap confirm. It applies to postpaid, prepaid, and business accounts, although menu names and available options differ by account type.

Start with the account role and the lines you can change
Only an Account Owner or Account Manager can submit a mobile-plan change in My Verizon. Those roles can view all devices and plans on the account. An Account Member can generally see only their own device and cannot manage the entire account.

- Sign in to My Verizon and identify whether you are the Account Owner, Account Manager, or Account Member.
- If you are an Account Member, ask an authorized person to make the change or update your account access first.
- Remember that an Account Manager has broad authority under Verizon’s customer agreement, including adding lines, buying devices with device-payment agreements, billing services or accessories, and potentially extending a contract term. Delegate access only to people you trust.
Make a line-by-line list
Write down every line that may be affected, including tablets, watches, hotspots, and other connected devices. A family account can have different plans, discounts, perks, and payment arrangements on each line. Do not assume that changing the primary phone line automatically produces the same result for the others.

Record the current plan before comparing alternatives
Open Manage Plan or My Plan in My Verizon and capture the details shown for each line. A screenshot or exported note gives you a reliable baseline if the new plan looks different after submission.
Save these fields
- Plan name and edition.
- Monthly access charge for each line and the account total.
- Included premium or priority data, ordinary high-speed data, hotspot data, and any reduced-speed thresholds.
- Included talk, text, video, calling, or other network benefits.
- Perks attached to the line or account, including entertainment, storage, protection, call-filtering, or other recurring options.
- International calling, travel features, and TravelPass status.
- Any employer, military, student, loyalty, autopay, paperless-billing, or other discount displayed on the account.
Verizon’s prepaid guidance specifically tells customers to review the monthly cost, included data, and benefits before changing service. Use the same discipline on postpaid and business accounts, where line-level pricing and eligibility can be more complex.
Use recent usage to test whether the new allowance fits
In My Verizon, open Usage and review talk, text, and data for each line. Verizon also lists #MIN and #DATA as usage shortcuts. Check several billing periods when possible rather than relying on one unusually light or heavy month.

- Does the line routinely exceed its current high-speed data allowance?
- Is hotspot use the main source of consumption, or is it on-device video and social media?
- Are multiple lines using far less data than their allowances provide?
- Do travel months show international usage that could trigger separate charges?
- Would a network-management threshold affect the line’s busiest locations or times?
Match the proposed plan to actual behavior, not just the headline data number. A cheaper allowance can cost more if overage-like features, extra passes, or replacement add-ons are needed later; a larger allowance may be wasteful when usage is consistently low.
Inventory add-ons, perks, and international settings
Plan changes do not necessarily carry every option forward in the same way. Open each line’s add-ons and recurring services before choosing a new plan.

International calling and travel
Check international calling packages, TravelPass, other travel features, and any recurring international option. Review whether the feature is included, discounted, removed, or billed separately under the proposed plan. Prepaid and business accounts expose international settings in separate screens, so do not rely on the standard consumer-plan flow.
Protection and digital services
Record device protection, cloud storage, call-filtering services, and plan-specific perks. Note whether each item is attached to a phone number, the whole account, or a particular plan edition. If the confirmation screen does not explicitly show an option, stop and verify its treatment before submitting.
Perks with enrollment or redemption rules
Some perks require selecting them again, accepting new terms, or choosing one option from a menu. Save the current selections and check the proposed selections line by line. A plan change can alter eligibility even when the monthly access charge appears lower.
Clear pending orders before attempting a plan change
Verizon states that it cannot make plan or allowance changes while a pending order remains on the account. An order may be waiting because of a device purchase, upgrade, activation, line change, or another service request.
- Open the account’s order or activity view in My Verizon.
- Identify whether the order is still processing, awaiting shipment, or awaiting activation.
- Wait for completion, or cancel the order if cancellation is available and appropriate.
- If cancellation controls are restricted, have the Account Owner or an Account Manager handle it.
- Return to Manage Plan only after the order is closed, then reload the account.
Starting a plan change in another browser or on another device will not bypass this restriction; the block is tied to the account state.

Check billing, taxes, device payments, and promotions
There is no Verizon fee to change a plan or allowance. That does not mean the next bill will be unchanged. Monthly access charges, taxes, and surcharges can all move when the plan or number of lines changes.
Compare the complete recurring total
Use the estimate shown during checkout, not just the advertised base price. Compare the current and proposed totals for:
- Monthly access charges for every affected line.
- Taxes, government fees, and surcharges.
- Per-line add-ons and recurring perks.
- International or travel options.
- Any one-time activation, equipment, or adjustment amount displayed by Verizon.
Protect device-payment and promotion benefits
Before confirming, open the device-payment details and promotion terms associated with each line. Verizon’s published support pages do not provide one universal transition table for every legacy discount, employer benefit, device promotion, or third-party add-on. A new plan may preserve, reduce, or end eligibility depending on the specific terms.
Check the remaining device balance, monthly promotional credits, required plan tier, and any minimum-term condition. Save the confirmation details if the screen shows that a credit or discount will continue.
Compare two plans on the same decision grid
Build a side-by-side comparison for each affected line. If a value is not displayed, treat it as unknown and resolve it before submitting.

Change the plan in My Verizon
The labels can vary by account type and app version, but the sequence is consistent: choose the line, select the plan, review options, choose the effective date, and confirm.
- Sign in to the My Verizon app with the Account Owner or Account Manager credentials.
- Open Account, then choose Manage Plan or My Plan.
- Select the specific line to change. Repeat the review for every line that will be affected.
- Choose the proposed plan and inspect the included data, network features, hotspot allowance, and line eligibility.
- Select or decline available perks. Check international calling, travel options, TravelPass, protection, cloud, and call-filtering choices separately.
- Review the estimated monthly total, taxes or surcharges shown, device-payment information, and promotion notices.
- Choose the effective date offered by Verizon, such as today or the first day of the next bill cycle.
- Read the final plan-change summary for every selected line. Confirm that no line, add-on, or perk was unintentionally included or removed.
- Submit the change and save the confirmation number or screen.
Business accounts use a comparable review flow for international changes: select the features, inspect estimated costs and the effective date, then submit. Prepaid accounts may present monthly cost, included data, and benefits in a different Manage Plan screen.
Choose the effective date deliberately
The effective date determines when the new allowance and recurring charge begin. Selecting today can change service during the current billing period; selecting the first day of the next cycle can make the transition easier to reconcile. Read Verizon’s proration or billing explanation on the confirmation screen if one appears.
Do not select a date simply because it is the first option. Coordinate it with a pending device activation, a planned trip, a promotion deadline, or the end of a billing cycle. For international features, verify that the date covers the days you expect to use the service.

Verizon says changes made in the app may take up to 15 minutes to appear on the account. Its customer-support FAQ says the new plan or allowances should display within 24 hours of the selected change date. Those are visibility windows, not a promise that every billing adjustment will be finalized immediately.
- Wait 15 minutes, then close and reopen My Verizon.
- Check each affected line’s plan name, data allowance, hotspot amount, perks, and international settings.
- Confirm that the effective date shown matches the date you selected.
- Keep the confirmation message until the next bill is available.
- Compare the next bill’s access charges, taxes, surcharges, credits, and device-payment amounts with the estimate.
Troubleshoot common blockers and surprises
The change button is unavailable
Check your role first. If you are an Account Member, an Account Owner or Account Manager must submit the change. Next, look for a pending order; complete or cancel it before trying again.
A line or perk is missing
Reload the account and open the line individually. Some connected-device, prepaid, business, international, or plan-specific options use separate screens. If an existing perk is not listed in the confirmation, do not assume it will continue.
The new plan is not visible
Allow the 15-minute app window and, after the selected effective date, the 24-hour account-display window. Sign out and back in, then check the web account if the app still shows the old details. Keep the confirmation record when contacting Verizon support.

The bill is higher than expected
Compare the bill against the final confirmation, not an advertised base price. Look for changed taxes, surcharges, line-level add-ons, lost promotional credits, device-payment adjustments, or international options that were added separately.
Postpaid, prepaid, and business account differences
- Postpaid: Pay close attention to billing-cycle timing, taxes, surcharges, device payments, promotional credits, and delegated Account Manager authority.
- Prepaid: Verizon’s guidance emphasizes reviewing monthly cost, included data, and benefits. International features and recurring options may appear in separate management areas.
- Business: International changes require reviewing selected features, estimated costs, and the effective date. Multiple administrators and many lines make a line-by-line confirmation essential.
Menu labels, plan names, prices, taxes, surcharges, perks, and eligibility can change. Verizon’s published pages do not establish a universal rule for every legacy discount, employer benefit, device promotion, or third-party add-on, so rely on the account-specific confirmation and the applicable promotion terms.
A practical go/no-go test
Submit the change only when all of these statements are true:
