No—Verizon has not done away with basic flip phones. Its current prepaid catalog lists the TCL FLIP 3, a keypad phone with 4G LTE and HD Voice. The important change is that some older handsets no longer work: Verizon completed its CDMA network retirement on December 31, 2022, so a phone that depends on 3G/CDMA or lacks VoLTE support cannot use Verizon’s retired network for calls, texts, or data.
What Verizon’s network retirement means for flip phones
The December 2022 milestone was the retirement of Verizon’s CDMA network—not the end of the flip-phone design. A handset’s shape does not determine whether it can connect. What matters is the exact model’s network technology and whether Verizon allows it to be activated.

Older phones that rely on CDMA, or that use 4G but cannot make voice calls over LTE, may no longer provide service on Verizon. The retirement date is historical; it does not mean every phone sold before that date stopped working at the same time, or that every flip phone is incompatible now.

Why VoLTE and HD Voice matter
VoLTE means Voice over LTE: calls travel over a 4G LTE network instead of a traditional voice network. Verizon describes HD Voice as a suite of services enabled by VoLTE. A phone needs compatible voice support, not merely an LTE data connection, to make calls using this setup.

- Device operates within approved frequencies overlapping with the following cellular bands: LTE 255,Unlicensed NII-3 DOWN | LTE 46,TD Unlicensed DOWN
Verizon’s TCL FLIP 3 listing identifies the phone as supporting 4G LTE and HD Voice. That example shows that a basic keypad phone can work with current LTE voice technology; it does not establish that every LTE flip phone—or every older handset—will work.
Basic flip phones and foldable smartphones are different
“Flip phone” can refer either to a basic handset with a physical keypad or to a smartphone with a folding screen. Verizon’s TCL FLIP 3 is a basic voice-and-text model. Its announced 2026 motorola razr is a foldable-screen smartphone. Their shared folding design does not make them the same kind of device, and smartphone features do not determine whether a basic phone is supported.

Verizon’s prepaid product page lists the TCL FLIP 3 with voice and text, 4G LTE, HD Voice, dual displays, large keys, and USB Type-C charging. Its listed specifications also include 16 GB of storage and a 5 MP rear camera. These are product-page specifications, not independent tests or a guarantee of coverage in a particular area.
A catalog listing is not a promise that the phone is in stock at every store, available under every plan, or compatible when purchased from any third-party seller. Check the listing and activation terms at the time you buy.

How to check whether an older flip phone will work
- Find the exact model number. Check the label under the battery, the phone settings, or the original packaging. A family name alone may cover different versions.
- Check for VoLTE or HD Voice. Look up the exact model’s specifications or ask the seller or manufacturer. LTE data capability by itself does not confirm LTE voice support.
- Confirm Verizon compatibility and activation eligibility. Give Verizon the exact model information and ask whether it can be activated on your line. Support for relevant network bands does not, by itself, guarantee that Verizon will accept a device.
- Verify the purchase details. Confirm the model in the listing, current stock, plan requirements, and return policy before buying, especially from a third-party seller.
Verizon Business information describes the Alcatel GO FLIP V as supporting 4G LTE, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling. That establishes it as an example of a flip design using LTE voice technology, but does not establish that it is currently available to consumer customers. Check directly with Verizon before treating it as a purchase option.
