Google Family Link is the better value for families whose children use Android phones, Chromebooks or compatible Fitbit devices. It covers app approvals, screen-time limits, bedtime and school schedules, location and Google-service filters without a subscription price listed in Google’s help material. Verizon Family Plus is the broader safety service for a Verizon household that needs carrier-line activity controls, driving insights, location tools, Family Line management or optional Gizmo Watch support, but it usually adds a recurring charge.
The name matters: Verizon Smart Family is legacy terminology. Verizon says Smart Family is no longer available to add to accounts; current plans and support use Verizon Family and Verizon Family Plus. The comparison below therefore evaluates the current Verizon services rather than treating Smart Family as a separate product.

At a glance: which service should you choose?
| What you need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Android app approvals, usage reports and daily limits | Google Family Link | Its core supervision tools are built around Android devices and Google accounts. |
| Chromebook controls and Google Play, Chrome or Search restrictions | Google Family Link | Google documents these controls for supervised Android and Chrome OS devices. |
| Bedtime and school-day schedules | Google Family Link | Android 7 and newer supports Downtime and School time schedules, including weekly schedules, unlimited apps and school-time breaks. |
| Verizon cellular lines, call/text activity or driving insights | Verizon Family Plus | These are carrier-integrated features rather than ordinary Google-account controls. |
| Location and check-in tools across a Verizon-connected family | Verizon Family Plus | Verizon adds location, check-in and pick-me-up features, with Family Line and Gizmo Watch compatibility documented. |
| A child who uses an iPhone or iPad | Usually Verizon Family, if the family uses Verizon service | Family Link’s documented child-device controls largely do not function on iOS. |
| Lowest ongoing cost | Google Family Link | Google’s official help material lists no subscription price; Verizon Family Plus pricing depends on the Verizon plan. |
Neither product is a universal message-reading system. Verizon explicitly excludes many internet, RCS and social-messaging channels, while Family Link is designed for account, app, screen-time, location and Google-service management rather than complete message surveillance.
What replaced Verizon Smart Family?
Verizon Smart Family is the former name. Verizon’s current support guidance says the instructions also apply to Smart Family, but Smart Family is “no longer available to add to accounts.” When you compare Verizon with another parental-control service, use these current names:

Existing Smart Family users may still encounter the old wording in help pages or installed apps. That does not mean Smart Family remains a separately purchasable service.
How Verizon Family and Family Plus work
Carrier-account supervision
Verizon Family is tied to a Verizon account and its connected family lines. That relationship lets Verizon expose information and controls that an account-only app cannot provide, including cellular activity controls and Verizon line management. The exact features available depend on the account and whether Family Plus is enabled.
What Family Plus adds
Verizon lists these Family Plus capabilities:
- Content filtering and web or app activity monitoring.
- Screen-time supervision and the ability to pause internet access.
- Location tracking, check-in and pick-me-up features.
- Verizon cellular call and text activity controls.
- Driving insights.
- Family Line compatibility and optional Gizmo Watch support.
- Additional safety services documented as part of the Plus feature set.
This combination makes Family Plus a safety dashboard for a Verizon household, not merely a timer that blocks apps. It can be useful when the parent’s concern includes where a child is, whether a vehicle trip is being driven safely, how a Verizon line is being used, and whether a wearable should be included.

Verizon’s terms define an important boundary: the service does not monitor or block calls or messages sent over the internet or through RCS. Verizon specifically names Apple iMessage, Apple FaceTime, Google Messages, Google Voice and WhatsApp, as well as social channels such as Facebook Messenger and Instagram Direct Messages. A parent should therefore not buy Family Plus expecting a transcript of every conversation or a universal block on every messaging service.
Cellular call and text activity controls are not the same thing as reading internet-based conversations. A child can still communicate through an excluded service even when Verizon Family Plus is supervising the line, apps or internet access.

How Google Family Link works
Google-account controls
Family Link supervises a child’s Google account and compatible devices. Google’s official help lists:
- Approval requests for apps and the ability to block apps.
- App-usage reports.
- Daily screen-time limits.
- Remote device locking.
- Android-device location.
- Content controls for Google Play, Chrome and Search.
These tools are strongest when the child’s device, apps and browsing activity are already within Google’s supported ecosystem. Family Link can help a parent decide which apps are installed, how long a child can use the device and what categories of Google content are available, but it is not a carrier account monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDowntime and School time
On Android 7 and newer, Family Link supports Downtime and School time schedules. Parents can set weekly schedules, choose apps that remain available without counting against a limit, and create school-time breaks. That makes it particularly suitable for a routine such as a weekday school block, an evening bedtime cutoff and different weekend rules.
Supported child devices
Google documents Android 5.0 and newer, Chromebooks running Chrome OS 71 and newer, and Fitbit Ace LTE as supervised-device options. Support is device-specific: a feature available on Android may not exist on a Chromebook, and Chromebook location reporting is unavailable.
Family Link on an iPhone or iPad: the limitation that changes the decision
Family Link can be installed or used by a parent on Apple hardware, but that does not give it full control over a child’s iPhone or iPad. Google states that most supervision tools do not work when the child uses iOS. In particular, the following do not work on a child’s iPhone or iPad:

- Screen-time limits.
- Device location.
- App-activity reports.
- App blocking and app-permission controls.
- Chrome website restrictions.
When a child signs in to Google apps on an iPhone or iPad, those documented limitations remain. A family with an iPhone-using child should not choose Family Link on the assumption that the Android feature set will carry over unchanged.
Feature-by-feature comparison
| Capability | Verizon Family Plus | Google Family Link |
|---|---|---|
| App approvals and blocking | Provides web and app activity monitoring and content controls; the exact control set depends on the Verizon service and device. | App-request approval, app blocking and app-permission controls are core features on supported child devices. |
| Screen-time limits | Screen-time supervision is included in Plus. | Daily limits, Downtime and School time are documented for supported Android devices. |
| Internet pause | Plus can pause internet access. | Remote device locking is documented; Family Link is not a Verizon-style cellular internet pause service. |
| Location | Location tracking, check-in and pick-me-up features; carrier and wearable compatibility can matter. | Android-device location; Chromebook location reporting is unavailable, and location does not work as a child-device control on iPhone or iPad. |
| Cellular call and text activity | Verizon cellular call and text activity controls are part of the Plus feature set. | Not a carrier-line monitoring service. |
| Internet, RCS and social messages | Does not monitor or block many excluded services, including iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages, Google Voice, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram Direct Messages. | Focuses on account, app, screen-time, location and Google-service controls; it should not be treated as universal message surveillance. |
| Driving information | Driving insights are included in Plus. | No comparable driving feature is listed in Google’s documented Family Link controls. |
| Wearables | Optional Gizmo Watch support and Family Line compatibility are documented. | Fitbit Ace LTE is listed as a supervised-device option. |
| Parent-device platform | Supports compatible Android and Apple parent devices while managing Verizon-connected family devices. | Parents can use Family Link on supported platforms, but the child-device operating system determines whether supervision works. |
| Subscription price | Plan-dependent: $14.99 per month standard, $10 per month as a qualifying-plan perk, or included with certain Unlimited Ultimate plans. | No subscription price is listed in Google’s official help material. |
Pricing and account requirements
Verizon Family
Verizon Family is included at no additional cost with some postpaid Verizon accounts and with Gizmo Watch service. “Included” is not universal, so the account’s eligibility determines whether a separate charge appears.
Verizon Family Plus
Verizon’s current support pricing lists a standard price of $14.99 per month. Qualifying plans can receive a $10-per-month perk, and certain Unlimited Ultimate plans include Family Plus. These are recurring plan terms, not a one-time purchase; verify the exact benefit on the Verizon account before activating it.
Google Family Link
Google’s official Family Link help material does not list a subscription price. That makes it the lower-cost option when the required controls are limited to supported Android, Chromebook or Fitbit Ace LTE devices. It does not eliminate the cost of the child’s device, cellular plan or any separate Google service.
Which service works best for common family setups?
An Android phone and Chromebook household
Choose Family Link first when the children use Android phones or Chromebooks and the main goals are app approvals, daily limits, bedtime, school schedules, Google Play controls, Chrome or Search filtering and Android location. Its controls map directly to that environment, and the documented schedule tools can support different weekday and weekend rules.

A mixed Android-and-iPhone family
Separate the parent’s device from the child’s device when evaluating compatibility. A parent may use an iPhone or Android phone to manage Verizon Family, but Family Link’s effectiveness depends on the child’s hardware. If one child uses an iPhone or iPad, the documented Family Link limits remove several of the controls families usually expect, including location, app activity and screen-time enforcement. A Verizon household may find Family Family Plus more practical for cross-device safety, provided the desired controls are available on the relevant lines.
A Verizon household with cellular oversight needs
Family Plus is the stronger match when the parent needs Verizon-account management, cellular call and text activity controls, internet pausing, line-level location tools, Family Line support or driving insights. Those are the reasons to pay for Plus rather than selecting Family Link solely for app timers.
A family that wants a child wearable
Compare the wearable ecosystem. Verizon documents optional Gizmo Watch support, while Google lists Fitbit Ace LTE as a supervised-device option. The choice depends on which wearable, account and cellular arrangement the family already uses; neither wearable path should be assumed to work with the other service.
A family focused on messages
Neither service delivers complete message surveillance. Verizon’s exclusions are explicit, and Family Link’s documented feature set is about accounts, apps, screens, locations and Google services. If the central requirement is reading every message or blocking every social-chat channel, these products do not meet that requirement as described by their official documentation.
How to set up the right service without overestimating its coverage
Before activating Verizon Family or Family Plus
- Confirm that the parent account is a supported Verizon postpaid account or an eligible Gizmo Watch arrangement.
- Check whether the account includes Verizon Family, qualifies for the $10 Family Plus perk, includes Plus with an Unlimited Ultimate plan, or will be billed the $14.99 standard monthly price.
- List each child’s phone, tablet, wearable and Verizon line. Compatibility is determined by the connected device and service, not just by the parent’s phone.
- Decide which controls are actually needed: location, check-ins, screen time, internet pausing, cellular activity, app or web activity, driving insights or wearable support.
- Explain the message boundary before relying on the service. iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages, Google Voice, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram Direct Messages are among the channels Verizon says it does not monitor or block.
Before setting up Google Family Link
- Identify the child device’s operating system and version. Google documents Android 5.0 or newer, Chrome OS 71 or newer and Fitbit Ace LTE as supervised-device options.
- Use a supervised Google account for the child and confirm that the intended controls are supported on that device type.
- Choose the required controls: app requests, app blocking, daily limits, Downtime, School time, remote locking, location and Google Play, Chrome or Search filters.
- For Android 7 or newer, create the weekly Downtime and School time schedules and decide which apps should remain unlimited.
- If the child uses an iPhone or iPad, remove unsupported expectations. Screen-time limits, location, app activity, app blocking, app permissions and Chrome website restrictions do not work there according to Google’s documentation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking the old name for a current plan
Searching only for Smart Family can lead to outdated instructions. Use Verizon Family or Family Plus when checking current eligibility, pricing and support.

Assuming a parent’s iPhone determines Family Link compatibility
The decisive device is the child’s supervised hardware. A parent can manage family technology from an Apple phone, but Family Link’s child controls remain substantially reduced when the child uses an iPhone or iPad.
Confusing line activity with message content
Verizon’s cellular activity controls do not override its exclusion of internet, RCS and social-messaging channels. A record of supported cellular activity is not a transcript of conversations in excluded apps.
Paying for Plus without using its carrier features
If a family only needs Android app approvals, screen-time limits, school and bedtime schedules, location and Google-service filters, Family Link may provide the needed controls without Verizon Family Plus’s recurring charge. Plus becomes easier to justify when its Verizon-specific location, line, driving, internet-pause or wearable features are part of the plan.

Expecting Chromebook location
Google documents Chromebook supervision but says Chromebook location reporting is unavailable. Use another supported device or another safety method when location is essential.
A practical decision framework
- Start with the child device. Android, Chromebook and Fitbit Ace LTE point toward Family Link’s supported ecosystem; an iPhone or iPad weakens Family Link’s supervision substantially.
- Identify whether the cellular account is part of the problem. Verizon lines, Family Line, cellular activity, driving information and Gizmo Watch support point toward Verizon Family Plus.
- Separate routine controls from safety features. App approvals, daily limits and school schedules are routine-management tools. Location, check-ins, driving insights and internet pausing address broader safety needs.
- Check the actual price on the account. Verizon Family may be included, while Plus may cost $14.99 monthly, $10 monthly with a qualifying perk or be included with certain Unlimited Ultimate plans.
- Test the message requirement against the documented boundaries. If the goal is complete monitoring of iMessage, WhatsApp, RCS or social direct messages, neither service should be presented as a complete solution.
Verdict
For most Android and Chromebook families, Google Family Link is the sensible starting point: its documented tools cover the everyday controls parents usually want, and Google’s help material lists no subscription price. It is especially strong when school-time and bedtime schedules, app approvals and Google-service filtering are the priority.
Choose Verizon Family Plus when the household already relies on Verizon and needs more than account-level screen rules—such as carrier-line activity controls, location and check-ins, internet pausing, driving insights, Family Line management or Gizmo Watch compatibility. Its recurring price is justified only when those broader Verizon features matter.
For a child using an iPhone or iPad, do not assume Family Link will provide Android-style supervision. Confirm the child-device limitations first, then decide whether Verizon’s compatible family and line controls better match the devices in use.
