Veritas is extending a gem-sized, cryptographic NFC identity chip beyond clothing and accessories to items such as jewelry, collectibles and championship trophies. A phone tap opens a product’s digital certificate, while Veritas says tampering can deactivate the chip and conceal its identifying codes. The company has publicly documented jewelry and trophy applications; a fragrance-bottle deployment has not been publicly confirmed.
What Veritas’s chip actually does
Veritas embeds a custom NFC microchip in a product and associates it with a digital product certificate. The chip uses NXP NTAG 424 DNA cryptographic technology, according to Veritas’s Digital Product Passport (DPP) material. Each chip has a persistent identifier connected to records such as materials, manufacturer, country of origin, lifecycle and provenance.

For a buyer, the basic interaction is familiar: hold an NFC-capable smartphone near the tagged item and open the authenticity record. Veritas positions the system as phone-readable, so a special handheld reader is not intended to be necessary. The record can carry more than a yes-or-no authenticity result, including care information, ownership history, resale events and the product’s story.
Veritas founder Luci Holland says the company combined hardware and software because ordinary shelf-level solutions can be vulnerable. “It is shocking to see that some of the shelf solutions, like NFC chips that brands are using, are actually so vulnerable and could easily be bypassed,” she told TechCrunch on February 10, 2026. That is a company claim about the security gap, not an independent guarantee that every attack is impossible.

How a phone check works
- Find the chip. The brand places the tag inside or on the product in a location designed for that object.
- Tap with an NFC phone. Bring the phone close to the product. The phone opens Veritas’s digital certificate or the brand’s linked experience.
- Inspect the identity record. Check the product identity and the associated details, including provenance, origin, materials or lifecycle information where the brand has supplied them.
- Look for tamper behavior. Veritas says tampering can make the chip dormant and hide identifying codes. A missing or inactive response should therefore be treated as a warning, not as proof of authenticity.
The chip authenticates a specific digital identity; it does not replace a brand’s physical inspection, chain-of-custody controls or an expert assessment of condition. A buyer should also verify that the certificate describes the same model, materials and ownership history as the item in hand.

Veritas lists three physical versions, intended to fit products with very different spaces and materials.

This is a specific announced deployment, not evidence that every Tiffany item or every trophy already carries a Veritas chip.

Veritas’s LinkedIn company page also describes a chip in LeBron’s first Nike shoe and a one-of-one leather deployment for Divine Design. Those examples show how the identity record can become part of an object’s provenance and cultural story, rather than remaining an invisible anti-counterfeit label.

What is known about fragrance bottles
No public Veritas release or named fragrance-partner announcement currently documents a fragrance-bottle deployment. Fragrance packaging could benefit from a small embedded identity, but the company’s publicly described evidence does not establish that it has been implemented. Treat claims that Veritas is already working on specific fragrance bottles as unverified until Veritas or a named partner publishes details.

These distinctions describe Veritas’s stated design and positioning. They should not be read as a certification that the system is unhackable or that a positive phone response alone proves an item is genuine.

Digital Product Passports and product history
Veritas presents its persistent identifiers as compatible with the European Union’s Digital Product Passport direction. In practice, that means a brand can maintain structured information about what a product is made from, where it came from and what happens to it during its lifecycle. For resale, a transferable digital record can help a buyer compare the physical object with its documented ownership and provenance.

The value depends on the brand’s data discipline. A chip cannot create missing provenance, correct an inaccurate record or guarantee that a seller has disclosed every repair. Buyers should read the certificate and compare it with invoices, serial markings, condition and the seller’s explanation.

Veritas’s business model and funding
Veritas is selling an integration platform to brands rather than a consumer authentication gadget. Its public positioning emphasizes demonstrations and partner conversations for secure product identity and luxury DPP deployments; consumer pricing, retail availability and referral terms have not been published.
TechCrunch reported a $1.75 million pre-seed round in 2026 led by Seven Seven Six. The same report cited estimates of $30 billion in annual luxury-counterfeit losses and a $210 billion second-hand luxury market. Those figures come from reporting cited by TechCrunch, not from a Veritas study, so they should be treated as market context rather than measured results from the chip.
Holland described the goal as combining design and technology “to create this solution that helps protect brands in this way to convey the information.” Seven Seven Six’s Alexis Ohanian Sr. characterized counterfeiting as an arms race in which luxury brands need stronger technical assistance.

What buyers should check before trusting a tagged item
- Use an NFC-capable phone and tap the actual item, not a screenshot or a seller-supplied link.
- Confirm that the certificate identifies the same product type, materials, origin and edition.
- Check whether the chip responds normally; a dormant response or hidden code is a tamper warning under Veritas’s stated design.
- Review provenance and ownership entries for gaps, unexplained transfers or details that conflict with the physical item.
- For high-value purchases, combine the digital record with an invoice, reputable seller and independent physical authentication.
