Vercel has introduced Daemons, now in public beta, for containers that need to stay running instead of waiting for an HTTP request. You choose how many instances run in each region; Vercel keeps those processes alive and restarts them after an exit or crash.
That makes Daemons a new fit for queue consumers, controlled-concurrency orchestration and CPU-heavy jobs such as video transcoding. Stateless web requests and I/O-heavy APIs still generally belong on Vercel Functions and Fluid compute.

What Vercel Daemons do
Daemons are long-lived container workers. After deployment, each process starts, announces that it is ready, polls a queue or database for work, and handles jobs as they arrive. They are not invoked by incoming web requests, which is why Vercel CTO Malte Ubl described them as “almost the opposite of temporary.” If a worker exits or crashes, Vercel restarts it.
You specify the instance count for each region, giving the workload a deliberate capacity level rather than allowing every incoming event to create another request handler. The model is pull-based at launch: your code retrieves work from a queue or database and processes it.

The New Stack reported the public-beta launch on October 15, 2026. Vercel said its container platform had already been used by 5,000 teams for 150,000 deployments, while the company’s control-plane API handled about one billion requests per month.
Which workloads fit best
Queue consumers and background jobs
A daemon can continuously poll a queue, reserve a job, process it and acknowledge completion. This suits email generation, data imports, indexing and other work where a service must be ready before the next message arrives.
Controlled deployment or build orchestration
Vercel’s own deployment pipeline illustrates the reason to control concurrency. GitHub rate limits and bursts of deployment activity make unbounded request concurrency undesirable. Fixed worker capacity lets an orchestrator process jobs steadily instead of starting an unrestricted request for every event.

CPU-heavy media processing
A launch example combines a Next.js front end, a Python API and a containerized FFmpeg worker. The FFmpeg process pulls jobs from Vercel Queues, creates playback files and generates thumbnails, then continues waiting for the next job. This pattern keeps CPU-intensive work away from the request path while retaining one application deployment environment.
Other continuously running processes
Any backend component that must maintain a polling loop or remain ready between jobs can be a candidate, provided its behavior matches the beta’s container and regional-instance limits.
Daemons versus Vercel’s other compute models
| Model | Execution pattern | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Daemons | Long-lived containers that pull work continuously; instance counts are set per region and processes are restarted after failure | Queue consumers, orchestration with fixed concurrency and CPU-heavy background processing |
| Functions on Fluid compute | Requests trigger execution; instances can handle concurrent requests and scale with demand | Stateless HTTP endpoints and I/O-bound work such as database queries, external APIs and model calls |
| Vercel Services | Backends run as Vercel Functions on Fluid compute by default | Web-facing services that need automatic request scaling rather than a permanent polling loop |
Fluid compute, introduced on February 4, 2025, combines serverless scaling with server-like behavior. It can scale from zero to peak traffic, reuse existing resources, pre-warm instances, stream responses and continue processing after a response. Vercel says early adopters reported cost reductions of up to 85 percent. Those characteristics favor work that spends much of its time waiting on I/O and can share an instance across concurrent requests.

Daemons reverse that trigger model: the process exists first and reaches out for work. Use them when continuous availability and explicit worker capacity matter more than per-request elasticity.
What the documented pricing does—and does not—tell you
Vercel’s June 25, 2025 Active CPU pricing lists $0.128 per active CPU hour, $0.0106 per gigabyte-hour of provisioned memory and an invocation charge. Vercel’s example puts a Standard instance running at 100% active CPU at about $0.149 per hour. These figures describe Active CPU and Fluid compute; the launch coverage did not publish Daemons-specific pricing.
A daemon’s economics differ from an on-demand function because an intentionally running process can consume resources while it is waiting for the next job. Estimate cost from the number of instances, regional placement, memory reservation, active CPU time and queue volume, then confirm the beta’s billing rules in current Vercel documentation before committing production traffic.

How to decide where a worker should run
- Identify the execution shape. If work starts with an HTTP request and ends with a response, use Functions or Services. If a process must poll continuously, Daemons or another long-lived-process platform are the natural candidates.
- Measure the compute profile. CPU-bound tasks such as FFmpeg encoding benefit from dedicated worker capacity. Database calls, API requests and model calls that spend time waiting generally benefit from Fluid’s concurrent request handling.
- Set the concurrency policy. Daemons let you choose regional instance counts, which can protect upstream limits and keep throughput predictable. Request-driven functions instead scale according to incoming traffic.
- Check operational boundaries. Confirm queue integration, retry and acknowledgement behavior, regional availability, resource limits and failure handling for the public beta. The launch report did not specify hard quotas or supported regions.
- Compare the value of consolidation. Keeping a web front end, API and worker in one Vercel project can simplify private service communication and deployment. A separate process host may remain preferable when its mature worker controls, pricing or regional coverage better match your workload.
Should you move a worker from another host?
If a worker already runs reliably on a long-lived-process provider such as Render, Fly.io or Railway, there is no automatic reason to migrate it. Daemons are in public beta, and final pricing, quotas, supported regions and a general-availability date were not included in the launch coverage.
Migration is more compelling when your application already uses Vercel for its front end and API, needs controlled queue concurrency, or spends significant CPU time on jobs such as transcoding. A hybrid design is also valid: keep stateless HTTP services on Vercel and place the continuous worker on Daemons or an established process host. That avoids forcing a polling loop into a request-oriented runtime while letting each component use the execution model it needs.
What to verify before production
- Public-beta limits, regional support and maximum instance counts
- Daemon pricing, including idle and provisioned-resource charges
- Queue connection, retries, visibility timeouts and idempotent job handling
- Container startup time, memory and CPU limits for your workload
- Restart behavior and how in-progress jobs recover after a crash
- Observability for polling lag, throughput, failures and regional capacity
Daemons expand Vercel beyond temporary request execution, but they do not replace Functions or Fluid compute. Choose the model that matches how work begins: incoming requests for serverless services, or a continuously running process that pulls jobs for Daemons.
