The remaster grew out of development on Songs of the Past, a new expansion planned for 2027. In a studio blog, author Ryan Dinsdale explained that the team saw a need to upgrade parts of the base game while working on that expansion. Songs of the Past is a separate, upcoming release; it is not the remaster itself.
Do you get the remaster free if you own The Witcher 3?
CD PROJEKT RED says eligible owners receive a free upgrade, but eligibility depends on the platform and the version you already own. Check that your original copy is on the qualifying platform before assuming you can claim it.

What does the remaster change?
The studio highlights updates to visuals and performance, combat, skill progression, animations, the interface, and cross-platform mod support. These are broad feature areas, not a promise that every platform has identical graphics or controls.
- Visuals and performance: The release announcement lists upgrades in both areas. PC path tracing and PS5 Pro support are platform-specific features.
- Combat and progression: Combat and skill progression have been updated. GamesRadar+’s reviewer said the revised progression made it easier to shape distinct builds.
- Animations, interface, and quality of life: The reviewer also noted a closer combat camera, simpler menus, and improvements to traversal and quests. These are the reviewer’s impressions, not a claim that every player will experience the changes the same way.
- Mods and platform features: The studio highlights cross-platform mod support. Switch 2 also has platform-specific controls and features; do not assume it has feature parity with PC, PS5, or Xbox.
GamesRadar+ disclosed that its review was conducted on PC using a publisher-provided code. Its observations are useful context, but they are not a platform-by-platform performance comparison.
What is the latest patch status?
As of October 8, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED’s official news listing showed Patch 5.01 live for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, following earlier 5.00b and 5.00c updates. That status is time-sensitive, so check the studio’s official Witcher news page for newer announcements.
