Instead of making every run only a race through randomly generated rooms to improve a hero before the next attempt, its announced loop asks a co-op team to enter a dangerous mission, recover valuable relics or Artifacts, survive escalating threats and escape. The current Steam demo is free, supports three players total and previews only part of the planned game, so the comparison is about a work in progress rather than a finished release.
What Vaultbreakers is trying to be
Vaultbreakers is an in-development fantasy extraction action RPG from BetaDwarf. The game uses a top-down perspective and is being designed around missions rather than a purely self-contained roguelike run. The developer describes a choice between player-versus-environment (PvE) play and player-versus-player-versus-environment (PvPvE), with dynamic events, enemies, loot or crafting, perks, abilities and collectible Artifacts forming the announced foundation. Its official site presents those features as the direction of development, not as a final specification: the team is targeting a 2027 launch on PC and consoles, currently expects a premium release, and says those plans can change. BetaDwarf’s official Vaultbreakers site is the best place to check the latest plan.

The publisher’s description gives the premise a concrete objective: recover relics, defeat bosses and escape. That extraction objective is the important distinction. In a conventional action roguelike, the run usually ends when the team dies, beats the final encounter or reaches the end of a chapter. In Vaultbreakers, the valuable decision can come earlier: leave with what you have, or stay in the mission to pursue more rewards while exposure to enemies, events and other players increases.

1. Enter a dangerous mission
A Vaultbreakers session begins with a team choosing to venture into a fantasy area and pursue objectives. The announced systems include enemies, dynamic events, loot or crafting materials, perks, abilities and Artifacts. These elements suggest that a mission is not simply a sequence of combat rooms; the team is expected to navigate threats and make choices about how much of the map and its rewards to risk.

2. Build power while searching for value
Combat rewards and progression are described in terms of loot, crafting, perks and abilities. Artifacts are the headline collectibles, while the publisher refers to relics that must be recovered. The available material does not establish the final inventory rules, rarity tiers or crafting recipes, so those details should not be treated as settled. What is clear is the intended relationship between combat and extraction: the team is gathering something worth carrying out, not merely accumulating temporary upgrades for the current map.
3. Decide when to leave
Extraction creates a decision that many room-based roguelikes do not emphasize: the safest moment to bank progress may arrive before the mission’s most lucrative fight. The publisher specifically describes escaping after boss battles, making the exit part of the objective rather than an automatic end-of-run screen. A team that pushes onward may gain better rewards; a team that leaves earlier protects what it has already recovered. The exact extraction locations, timers and failure conditions remain subject to development.
4. Carry the consequences into the next mission
Because the game is built around relics, Artifacts and extraction, the stakes extend beyond surviving a single encounter. The developer’s test communications describe a higher-risk Breaker mode in which players can lose carried items when they die. That rule appears in evolving test announcements rather than a final ruleset, so it should be read as the current direction, not a guarantee for the 2027 release. It is nevertheless a meaningful design choice: death can erase the value of a successful trip instead of merely forcing a restart.

PvE and PvPvE are separate choices, not just difficulty settings
BetaDwarf’s Steam announcements describe PvE Adventure and Core modes alongside a more dangerous PvPvE Breaker mode. In Adventure or Core, the pressure comes from the environment and its enemies. Breaker adds the possibility that another player-controlled team will contest the same opportunity, while the test communications pair that pressure with greater risk and reward. The announcements also say carried items can be lost on death in Breaker. The developer’s Steam announcements are dated communications about an evolving test, so mode names and rules may change.
This split matters because it lets the game serve two different co-op moods. A group that wants to learn a hero, explore Wolfswood or complete objectives without being ambushed can choose a PvE path. A group that enjoys reading the map, tracking rival teams and deciding whether a valuable haul is worth defending can opt into Breaker. In many action roguelikes, difficulty changes enemy health or damage; here, the announced distinction changes who can threaten your run and what failure can cost.

PvPvE also changes co-op communication. Players must call out not only enemy positions and cooldowns but signs that another team may be nearby, whether an objective is worth contesting and when to extract. That makes the game’s tension social as well as mechanical. It can produce memorable reversals, but it can also make a session less predictable than a purely cooperative run. Players who dislike losing carried items or being interrupted by rivals should treat Breaker as an optional experiment, not the default definition of Vaultbreakers.
What the free demo actually includes
The current demo is a bounded preview, not the complete Vaultbreakers experience. In its October 8, 2026 announcement, BetaDwarf said, “The Demo is free on Steam right now.” The official demo announcement lists the following scope:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Two playable characters.
- Part of the Wolfswood region.
- Quests leading through the first Vaultbreak.
- Co-op for up to two friends, making three players total.
- Legacy Points that are said to carry over.
The publisher estimates that the demo can provide up to seven hours of play. That is a publisher estimate, not an independently measured completion time, and the actual length will vary with exploration, retries and the number of players. The demo is useful for judging the feel of combat, the readability of the top-down view, the value of co-op coordination and whether an extraction objective appeals to your group. It cannot establish the final roster, map count, endgame, monetization or the complete PvPvE rules.
The two-character limit is especially important when comparing the demo with the planned game. The publisher announcement says the full game is planned around five heroes, while the current build exposes only two. A missing class, ability or role is therefore not evidence that the final game will lack it; it is simply outside the present preview.
Vaultbreakers and Ravenswatch: the practical comparison
Ravenswatch is a useful released comparison because it is also a top-down co-op action roguelike, but it is not a one-to-one equivalent. Nintendo’s official Switch listing describes a hero-driven game with randomly generated maps, talents, items, repeated runs and online co-op for up to four players. It lists a January 23, 2025 release date for Switch. Nintendo’s Ravenswatch listing supplies the released-game details in the table below.

The table shows why calling Vaultbreakers “another Ravenswatch” misses the main point. Both games combine top-down combat, co-op and repeatable progression, but Vaultbreakers adds an extraction question and an announced PvPvE track. Ravenswatch instead offers the clearer finished package today: a larger listed hero roster, four-player online support and a released progression structure.
Where the extraction layer changes co-op strategy
Every reward has a timing decision
In a conventional run, a powerful item generally helps until the run ends. In an extraction game, the team must also protect the opportunity to keep the reward. A group may have enough strength to defeat one more elite but not enough healing or time to survive the route out. The best decision is therefore not always “fight the strongest enemy available.” It can be “secure the haul, then leave.” Vaultbreakers’ announced relic-and-escape structure puts that judgment at the center of the session.
Roles become situational
The available information does not define final classes or fixed party roles, but extraction objectives naturally create different jobs during a mission. One player may focus on clearing enemies, another on scouting an event or exit, and a third on protecting the team’s carrier. Because only two heroes are playable in the demo, players should not infer a complete role chart from the preview. The useful test is whether the abilities and perks encourage your group to divide attention and communicate rather than simply stack damage.
Failure can matter after the fight
Ravenswatch’s listed run structure makes defeat a familiar roguelike reset. Vaultbreakers’ Breaker testing introduces a different emotional rhythm: winning a fight does not guarantee that the reward is safe, and death may remove carried items. That can make a successful extraction more satisfying, but it also raises the cost of experimentation. New players should begin with the PvE options described by the developer before deciding whether the higher-risk mode fits their group.
What Ravenswatch offers instead
Ravenswatch is the more straightforward choice for players who want a released hero-based co-op roguelike. Nintendo lists nine heroes, each supported by talents and items that shape builds. Randomly generated maps keep successive runs different, while four difficulty levels provide a clear way to increase the challenge. Online matchmaking and support for up to four players also make it easier to assemble a larger party than the Vaultbreakers demo currently allows.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Its pressure is organized around chapter progression and the time-sensitive action described in the Switch listing, rather than a cited extraction or PvPvE mode. That does not make it less demanding; it makes the source of pressure different. The team is racing through a run, improving a hero and surviving the chapter, not deciding whether another player will contest a relic or whether carried loot is worth risking in a Breaker match.
Because Ravenswatch is released, its listed roster and co-op format are concrete options rather than future targets. That distinction matters for a buyer choosing what to play this week. Vaultbreakers can be more interesting if its announced extraction experiment is the feature you want to explore, but Ravenswatch is the safer recommendation when you need a known four-player structure and an established game rather than a demo.
Party size is a real differentiator
The Vaultbreakers demo supports three players total: one host or solo player plus up to two friends. That is enough for a compact team, but it excludes a fourth regular from the same session. The publisher’s estimate and feature descriptions should therefore be read in the context of a small-group demo, not as proof that the final game will permanently cap parties at three.
Nintendo lists Ravenswatch online play for one to four players and matchmaking. A four-person group can include a full friend circle without leaving anyone out, and a solo player has a built-in route to finding teammates. If your decision is primarily about party logistics, Ravenswatch has the confirmed advantage in the cited listings. If three-player co-op is sufficient and the extraction premise is the attraction, the demo can still answer the more important question: whether your group enjoys managing a haul and an escape.

Development status: what is planned and what is not settled
BetaDwarf says it is aiming for a 2027 release and focusing on PC and consoles. The developer currently plans a premium launch, but explicitly says that plan can change. The publisher’s October 8, 2026 announcement describes five heroes for the full game, while the live demo contains two. These are announced intentions, not a final feature lock.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

The same caution applies to PvE/PvPvE scope, the Breaker risk rules, the final map and mission count, progression, pricing and platform availability. The official website and later developer announcements are more authoritative than old previews because the game is still being developed. Do not treat a demo feature as a promise that every system, item or mode will ship unchanged.
This status also explains why a direct “which game is better?” verdict would be misleading. Ravenswatch can be evaluated as a released product with a published Switch feature set. Vaultbreakers can currently be evaluated as a free, limited preview of a design direction. The fair question is which structure you want to try, not whether an unfinished game already outperforms a finished one.
Which game fits which player?
Choose Vaultbreakers if you want:
- An extraction objective where recovering relics or Artifacts is only half the mission and getting out matters.
- A deliberate choice between safer PvE play and a higher-risk PvPvE mode described in current developer tests.
- A small co-op party of up to three players for the present demo.
- A work-in-progress game whose announced direction includes dynamic events, loot or crafting, perks and abilities.
- To test a new system now without paying for the current demo, while accepting that the 2027 full release and its features may change.
Choose Ravenswatch if you want:
- A released co-op action roguelike rather than a development preview.
- Up to four-player online play and matchmaking.
- A larger currently listed roster of nine heroes with talents and items.
- Randomly generated maps, repeated runs and four listed difficulty levels.
- A time-sensitive chapter-driven challenge without the cited extraction and PvPvE rules.
That is a preference guide, not a claim that one game is universally superior. Vaultbreakers is the more distinctive proposition for players who specifically want extraction tension and the possibility of rival teams. Ravenswatch is the more established fit for players who value a known hero roster, four-player support and a released game they can play in its documented form.

How to use the demo to make an informed decision
- Start with the team size. Confirm whether your regular group can play as three or fewer. A fourth player changes the comparison immediately because the demo does not support four-person parties.
- Play enough of Wolfswood to test navigation and communication. The demo includes only part of the area, but it can show whether your group enjoys coordinating in a top-down environment instead of simply following a linear combat path.
- Try both available heroes. There are two in the demo, so use both before judging the planned five-hero roster. You are testing the feel of the current build, not counting the final game’s promised classes.
- Pay attention to the extraction decision. Notice whether your group naturally discusses when to leave, what to carry and whether another fight is worth the risk. That conversation is the core experiment Vaultbreakers offers.
- Treat Legacy Points as a preview feature. The announcement says they carry over, but do not assume that every progression rule or balance value will remain unchanged through development.
- Read current announcements before committing to the full release. Check the official site and developer updates for changes to modes, platforms, pricing, roster and the 2027 target.
The bottom line on what sets Vaultbreakers apart
Vaultbreakers’ defining idea is not simply that it is another top-down co-op action game. It is the combination of a fantasy action RPG, an extraction objective and a deliberate PvE/PvPvE split. You are meant to recover something valuable, decide how long to stay, survive the route out and—if you choose Breaker testing—accept that another team and the possibility of losing carried items can change the calculation.
The free demo on Steam is enough to sample that direction through two heroes, part of Wolfswood, the first Vaultbreak quests and three-player co-op. It is not enough to verify the final five-hero plan, the complete mode lineup, the premium launch model or the 2027 timing. Ravenswatch remains the more concrete released alternative, with nine listed heroes, four-player online co-op, matchmaking, random maps and four difficulty levels on Switch. Choose Vaultbreakers for the extraction experiment; choose Ravenswatch for a finished hero-driven roguelike you can play with up to four people now.
