Varonis vs Microsoft Purview: Which Data Security Platform Fits Your Organization?

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Choose Microsoft Purview when Microsoft 365 and Azure contain most of your sensitive data and you want Microsoft-native labeling, data-loss prevention (DLP), insider-risk controls, analytics, and Security Copilot workflows. Choose Varonis when exposure is spread across multiple clouds, SaaS applications, on-premises file systems, hybrid repositories, or complicated permissions and your priority is discovering risky data, understanding access, and remediating exposure. Some organizations use both: Varonis supplies broad data-risk intelligence and remediation, while Purview applies Microsoft labels and DLP controls.

The products overlap, but they are not interchangeable in every environment. The right decision depends on where data lives, which team owns policy, what your existing Microsoft licensing includes, how much access context you need, and whether the operating model can support another security platform.

What Microsoft Purview and Varonis actually do

Microsoft Purview is a Microsoft-centered control plane

Microsoft describes Purview Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) as helping organizations “discover, protect, and investigate sensitive data risks across their digital estate.” In practice, Purview DSPM brings together signals and workflows from Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention, Insider Risk Management, Information Protection, and Data Security Investigations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its documented coverage centers on Microsoft 365, Azure, Microsoft Fabric, AI applications and agents, and integrated third-party SaaS and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) sources. The service is designed to turn those signals into posture metrics, recommendations, policy creation, analytics, and investigations. Security Copilot can be added for investigation workflows where the organization has the required licensing and configuration.

Purview’s natural advantage is alignment. Microsoft sensitivity labels, retention controls, DLP policies, insider-risk indicators, and identity context can be managed through a connected Microsoft administration experience. That can reduce the number of separate consoles for a Microsoft-heavy tenant, although it does not eliminate the work of configuring data sources, classifiers, permissions, policy scope, alerts, and retention.

Varonis is a data-centric discovery and remediation platform

Varonis positions its Data Security Platform and DSPM capabilities around data discovery and classification, access intelligence, user and entity behavior analytics, threat context, and automated remediation. Its stated scope includes SaaS, IaaS, hybrid environments, structured data, unstructured data, and semi-structured data.

The emphasis is the data layer: what sensitive information exists, who can reach it, whether access is excessive, how users and entities behave, and which changes will reduce exposure. Varonis also documents integration with Microsoft Purview so that labels can be applied and Microsoft DLP controls enforced. That means Varonis does not have to replace Microsoft-native controls; it can provide discovery and prioritization that feed them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Varonis delivers its newer platform as SaaS. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company says it introduced the Varonis Data Security Platform as a SaaS offering in 2022 to simplify deployment, accelerate time-to-value, and enable continuous cloud-delivered automation. The same filing states that on-premises subscriptions are scheduled to end on December 31, 2026, which is material for legacy customers planning renewals or migration.

The central difference: ecosystem control versus data-risk context

Decision area Microsoft Purview Varonis
Primary center of gravity Microsoft 365, Azure, Fabric, Microsoft information protection, DLP, insider-risk and investigation workflows Discovery, classification, access intelligence, behavior analytics and remediation across heterogeneous data estates
Best environmental fit Organizations whose users, identities and sensitive content are primarily in Microsoft services Organizations with multiple clouds, SaaS applications, on-premises file systems, hybrid repositories or complex permissions
Policy and enforcement Microsoft sensitivity labels, DLP, Insider Risk Management and related Microsoft controls Automated posture actions, access remediation and relabeling; can integrate with Purview for Microsoft enforcement
Analytics emphasis Correlated data and user risk through Microsoft compliance and security solutions Access patterns, user and entity behavior, ownership context and threat activity tied to data
Deployment model Cloud service configured within the Microsoft tenant and its licensing framework SaaS platform requiring data-source connectors, onboarding and an operating model for remediation
Commercial visibility Entitlements depend on Microsoft plans, add-ons and tenant configuration Tenant-specific quote; public material does not provide a directly comparable price sheet

This distinction is more useful than asking which product is universally “better.” Purview is usually the more natural first platform when the control plane must be Microsoft-native. Varonis is usually the stronger first candidate when the problem is finding and reducing exposure across repositories that do not share a single vendor or permission model.

How coverage differs across data sources

Microsoft 365 and Azure

Purview has the shortest path to Microsoft 365 and Azure data because its labeling, DLP, identity and compliance capabilities are designed for those services. If SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, Teams, Azure storage and Fabric contain the majority of sensitive content, a Purview-centered program can keep discovery, policy and enforcement close to the systems that host the data.

Varonis can add value in this environment when the organization needs deeper exposure analysis, ownership context, permission remediation or cross-repository prioritization. The practical question is not whether either product can see Microsoft data, but whether Purview’s native signals answer the organization’s questions about excessive access, stale permissions, nested groups, unusual behavior and remediation at the required depth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Third-party SaaS and IaaS

Purview DSPM documentation names integrated third-party SaaS and IaaS sources, but coverage depends on the specific service, connector and entitlement. A proof of value should verify every high-value application rather than treating “third-party integration” as universal coverage.

Varonis is designed around heterogeneous estates and emphasizes connectors for SaaS, IaaS and hybrid repositories. That makes it a candidate for organizations that need one data-risk view across several clouds and application vendors. Connector availability, scan depth, metadata quality and remediation actions still need to be validated for each system.

File shares, databases and mixed data types

Unstructured file shares often contain the most difficult combination of sensitive content and inherited permissions. Varonis explicitly positions its platform for structured, unstructured and semi-structured data, with access intelligence and remediation. This is relevant where file systems, data lakes, databases and cloud collaboration stores must be assessed together.

Purview can classify information using sensitive-information types and classifiers, but the useful comparison is operational: which repositories are scanned, how deeply content is inspected, whether owners are identified, how permissions are represented, and what action follows a finding. Ask vendors to demonstrate those steps on representative data rather than relying on a feature checklist.

Discovery, classification and ownership: what to test

Sensitive-information detection

Start with the organization’s actual information types: customer identifiers, payment data, health information, intellectual property, credentials, source code and regulated records. Compare the available sensitive-information types, trainable or machine-learning classifiers, custom patterns and confidence thresholds. A high finding count is not useful if analysts cannot distinguish a confirmed exposure from a weak match.

Context around each finding

For every high-risk item, require the platform to show the repository, owner, users and groups with access, effective permissions, recent access, sensitivity classification, sharing path and recommended action. Context determines whether a team can fix exposure without breaking a business process.

Scan behavior and evidence

Confirm how initial scans and incremental scans work, what metadata is retained, how long results remain available, and whether scanning can respect regional, legal-hold or data-residency requirements. Record the expected time to first useful result for each major repository. “Connected” does not necessarily mean “fully classified.”

Access intelligence and behavior analytics

Where Varonis is typically differentiated

Varonis emphasizes access patterns, user and entity behavior, threat context and the relationship between permissions and sensitive data. This is valuable when the security question is, “Which accounts can reach too much sensitive information, and which changes will reduce the risk?” Examples include public links to confidential folders, dormant accounts retaining access, broad groups inherited through nested memberships, and unusual downloads from sensitive locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its value depends on accurate ownership and permission data. During evaluation, ask for a before-and-after demonstration: identify an exposed data set, explain why it is exposed, show the accountable owner, propose a least-privilege change and document the resulting risk reduction.

How Purview approaches user and data risk

Purview correlates data and user risk through its compliance and security solutions, including Insider Risk Management, DLP signals, Information Protection and Data Security Investigations. This is a strong fit when investigations already run through Microsoft identities, audit data and compliance workflows.

Teams should clarify which signals require particular Microsoft subscriptions, how alerts are prioritized, who can investigate them, and how privacy controls such as pseudonymization and role-based access are configured. The outcome to measure is not the number of alerts; it is the time needed to establish whether an event involves sensitive data and what response is authorized.

Prevention and remediation capabilities

Purview policy enforcement

Purview can recommend and create DLP and Insider Risk policies, apply sensitivity labels and use Microsoft-native controls to restrict or warn about risky actions. This is efficient when policy owners already work in the Microsoft compliance portal and when enforcement must follow Microsoft identities, applications and data locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before rollout, define policy ownership and exception handling. A DLP rule that blocks legitimate collaboration can create pressure for bypasses; a rule that only audits may not reduce exposure. Pilot policies in audit mode, review matches with business owners, then move selected rules to user notifications, overrides with justification or blocking.

Varonis remediation and posture automation

Varonis documents posture automation, relabeling and remediation across cloud environments. Typical actions include reducing excessive access, addressing stale permissions, correcting public exposure and changing labels or classifications based on discovered risk. Automation should be bounded by approval thresholds, ownership validation and rollback procedures.

Use a tiered remediation model:

  • Low-risk automatic actions: remove anonymous links that violate an approved baseline or quarantine clearly stale accounts after owner confirmation.
  • Owner-approved actions: narrow group membership, change folder permissions or alter sharing on business-critical repositories.
  • Security-led actions: respond to suspected exfiltration, compromised identities or high-confidence threat activity.

When Microsoft E5 is already in place

Microsoft E5 can provide important Purview and security entitlements, but “we have E5” is not the same as “all required capabilities are configured and sufficient.” Check which users are licensed, which workloads are covered, whether required add-ons apply, and whether the tenant has the staffing to operate classification, DLP, insider-risk and investigation workflows.

You may not need Varonis if Microsoft 365 and Azure contain nearly all sensitive data, Purview’s connectors cover the remaining sources, and the organization can answer access and remediation questions with Microsoft telemetry. You should evaluate Varonis if important data remains in non-Microsoft SaaS, IaaS, on-premises file systems or databases; if permissions are highly complex; or if reducing excessive access requires deeper data-centric prioritization than the current Microsoft deployment provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Purview replace Varonis, or can Varonis replace Purview?

Neither replacement claim is valid for every organization. Purview can replace a separate data-security platform when its source coverage, classification quality, access context and remediation controls meet the organization’s requirements and the Microsoft operating model is acceptable.

Varonis can reduce the need for separate discovery and access-risk tooling when it covers the organization’s repositories and provides the required remediation. It does not automatically replace Microsoft-native labels, DLP policy enforcement, Insider Risk Management or Microsoft investigation workflows. If those controls are mandatory, Purview remains part of the architecture.

Use a capability-by-capability decision rather than a brand-level decision:

Question If the answer is “yes,” it favors
Are most sensitive workloads in Microsoft 365, Azure or Fabric? Purview first
Must labels and DLP be enforced through Microsoft-native controls? Purview, potentially with Varonis feeding context
Are critical repositories spread across several clouds, SaaS applications and on-premises file systems? Varonis first or a combined design
Is excessive access and permission cleanup the primary risk-reduction goal? Varonis is a strong candidate
Does the team want one Microsoft-administered control plane? Purview first
Does the organization need broad cross-platform data-risk prioritization and remediation? Varonis first or combined deployment
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When using both platforms makes sense

A combined architecture is reasonable when Microsoft-native enforcement is required but the organization also needs broad discovery and remediation. One practical pattern is to use Varonis to map sensitive data, ownership, permissions and behavior across the estate, then use its documented Purview integration to apply Microsoft labels and enforce DLP where Microsoft workloads are involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define system ownership before connecting the products. Decide which platform is authoritative for classification, which owns labels, which creates DLP policies, which approves permission changes, and where investigations are recorded. Without those decisions, two tools can produce conflicting classifications, duplicate alerts and unclear accountability.

Integration questions to answer

  • Which Varonis findings can trigger Purview labels or policy actions?
  • How are label changes synchronized, and what happens when a user edits a label manually?
  • Which platform stores the audit trail for remediation and policy exceptions?
  • Can both systems preserve retention, legal-hold and regional requirements?
  • What happens if a connector, API permission or synchronization job fails?

A practical evaluation plan

Step 1: Inventory the estate

  1. List every repository containing regulated, confidential or mission-critical data.
  2. Record the service, region, data type, owner, identity source, permission model and estimated volume.
  3. Mark repositories that are public, externally shared, subject to retention or difficult to scan.
  4. Separate Microsoft-native workloads from third-party SaaS, IaaS, on-premises and hybrid systems.

Step 2: Define measurable outcomes

Choose outcomes before demonstrations. Examples include reducing publicly exposed sensitive files, finding all stale privileged accounts, classifying a defined percentage of high-value repositories, shortening investigation time, or reducing the number of users with unnecessary access. Capture the baseline and the evidence required to prove improvement.

Step 3: Run the same proof of value

  1. Connect representative Microsoft, cloud, SaaS and on-premises repositories.
  2. Use the same sensitive-data test set and the same permission scenarios.
  3. Measure discovery coverage, false positives, ownership accuracy, scan duration and incremental-update behavior.
  4. Test a real remediation workflow with approval, rollback and audit evidence.
  5. Simulate an investigation involving unusual access to sensitive information.

Step 4: Validate operations

Assign the people who will operate the platform after purchase: compliance, identity, security operations, data owners and privacy counsel. Estimate weekly alert volume, exception reviews, connector maintenance, policy tuning, owner outreach and incident escalation. A technically capable platform can fail if no team owns these tasks.

Step 5: Confirm licensing and contracts

Obtain current, tenant-specific quotes. Confirm which Purview capabilities are included in existing Microsoft plans, which workloads require add-ons, and whether Varonis pricing changes with data volume, users, repositories or modules. For legacy Varonis deployments, review the stated December 31, 2026 end date for on-premises subscriptions and create a migration or renewal plan well in advance.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming connector names equal full coverage

A connector may expose metadata but not inspect every file type, historical version, nested permission or application action. Require a written coverage matrix for the exact editions and repositories you will operate.

Counting findings instead of reducing exposure

Large discovery totals can reflect duplicate matches, low-confidence classifications or stale data. Track the number of high-risk records with an owner, an approved action and a verified reduction in access or exposure.

Automating permissions without ownership controls

Permission changes can interrupt financial close, engineering releases or customer support. Require owner approval for business-critical repositories, document exceptions and maintain rollback evidence.

Deploying DLP before classification quality is ready

DLP policies built on noisy classifiers generate alert fatigue and user resistance. Start with a narrow, high-confidence data set, tune policies in audit mode, and expand only after reviewing real matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring privacy and insider-risk governance

User and entity analytics can involve sensitive employee information. Establish role-based access, investigation authorization, retention periods, pseudonymization rules where available, and a documented process for legal or works-council review.

What the vendor-reported statistics mean

Varonis’s 2025 State of Data Security Report, referenced in its 2026 DSPM Buyer’s Guide, states that “99% of organizations have exposed sensitive data that can easily be surfaced by AI.” Treat this as a vendor-reported figure, not an independent benchmark. It is useful as a risk signal, but it should not substitute for measuring exposure in your own repositories.

Recommended decision by organization profile

Microsoft-first enterprise

Select Purview first when Microsoft 365 and Azure hold most sensitive information, identities are managed through Microsoft, and the security and compliance teams want one Microsoft-administered control plane. Validate whether third-party and legacy repositories are covered before declaring the program complete.

Multi-cloud or hybrid enterprise

Select Varonis first when data is distributed across multiple clouds, SaaS applications, on-premises file systems and complex permission structures. Prioritize connector depth, access intelligence, ownership accuracy and the ability to remediate exposure without disrupting operations.

Regulated organization requiring Microsoft enforcement and broad visibility

Evaluate both. Use Varonis for cross-platform discovery, prioritization and remediation where it adds coverage, and use Purview for Microsoft-native labels, DLP and insider-risk workflows. Establish a clear division of responsibility before production deployment.

Bottom line

Purview is the better starting point for a Microsoft-centered environment that needs integrated labeling, DLP, insider-risk management, analytics and investigation. Varonis is the better starting point for a heterogeneous data estate where the hardest problems are discovery, excessive access, behavioral context and remediation. A combined design is justified when both requirements are material. Make the final choice only after testing your actual repositories, permissions, data types, licensing entitlements and operating capacity.
