Vapor Chambers vs. Graphite Sheets: How Phone Cooling Systems Compare

Vapor chambers and graphite sheets solve different parts of a phone’s heat problem. A vapor chamber is a sealed, two-phase heat spreader: liquid evaporates at a hot spot, vapor carries energy across the chamber, and condensation releases it at cooler areas. A graphite sheet is a thin, solid layer that conducts heat mainly across its plane. It broadens a hot spot but does not, by itself, eject heat from the phone.

They are therefore not universal alternatives. Modern phones may use one, the other, or both, alongside copper, thermal-interface materials, the frame, software controls and, in gaming phones, an external cooler. The meaningful comparison is the complete thermal path: heat source, spreader area and thickness, interfaces, enclosure, workload and the phone’s control strategy.

What a vapor chamber does

A vapor chamber is a flattened, sealed enclosure containing a working fluid and internal structures that return liquid to the heated region. The section over a processor, charging circuit or another hot component acts as an evaporator. Heat turns the liquid into vapor; the vapor moves through the chamber toward cooler sections; condensation releases the energy into those sections; and the liquid returns through the internal wick or channel structure.

This phase-change cycle can transport substantial heat over a broad, thin area while keeping the source and destination separated. Samsung’s historical explanation of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge describes the distinction clearly: “Unlike the conventional thermal spread sheet technology, the thermal spreader uses changes in the phases of water to radiate heat.” That page explains a mechanism and a 2016-era phone design, not the construction of every current Galaxy model. See Samsung’s technical explanation.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What the phase change changes

  • Heat transport: vapor carries latent heat quickly from the evaporator to cooler condenser regions.
  • Hot-spot control: the chamber can draw energy away from a concentrated source before it creates an extreme local temperature.
  • Orientation tolerance: the internal return structure is designed to bring liquid back, although chamber geometry and operating conditions still matter.
  • Design dependency: chamber thickness, shape, wick structure, fluid charge, contact pressure and placement determine results. “Has a vapor chamber” is not a complete specification.

What a graphite sheet does

Phone graphite sheets are solid, thin, in-plane heat spreaders. Heat entering one part of the sheet conducts laterally through the graphite, distributing energy across a larger area. This can reduce a severe local hot spot and make it easier for other layers—such as a frame, display, back cover or another spreader—to absorb and dissipate the energy.

The sheet is not a standalone radiator. It does not make heat disappear and normally does not move it through a phase change. The final path to the surroundings depends on contact with neighboring layers, the sheet’s area and thickness, the phone’s enclosure and the airflow or surface on which the phone rests. The University of Colorado Boulder and Gore describe this role in their explanations of smartphone heat spreading: Colorado Boulder’s overview and Gore’s thermal-stack discussion.

Why a very thin sheet can still matter

  • Graphite can cover a large footprint while adding little thickness, valuable in a tightly packed handset.
  • It can bridge several components or steer heat around battery and camera constraints.
  • Its performance depends strongly on flat contact, adhesive or interface layers and whether a receiving layer can actually use the spread area.
  • A larger warm area is not automatically a failure. Spreading can lower a concentrated chip hot spot while making more of the phone’s surface feel warm.

Vapor chamber versus graphite sheet at a glance

Characteristic Vapor chamber Graphite sheet
Heat-transfer mechanism Two-phase evaporation, vapor transport and condensation inside a sealed chamber Solid-state conduction mainly along the sheet’s plane
Primary job Move heat from a source to cooler regions of the chamber Spread a local hot spot across a wider area
Construction Flattened enclosure, working fluid and liquid-return structures Thin graphite layer integrated with interfaces and neighboring materials
Typical design advantage Efficient long-distance transport within a broad, thin footprint Large-area coverage with minimal thickness and weight
What it cannot do alone It cannot dump heat outside the phone without a connected dissipation path It cannot remove heat from the device without connected structural or environmental paths
Key variables Area, thickness, wick and channel design, fluid, contact and placement Area, thickness, orientation of the conductive plane, contact and surrounding layers
How it appears in phones Often placed over a processor or other high-power source Used under or around displays, batteries, boards and other hot zones

Why phones often use both

A phone can use a vapor chamber to transport heat away from the highest-power source and graphite to distribute that heat after it reaches a larger section of the stack. Copper, aluminum, thermal-interface materials, structural shields and software power controls can complete the route. Treating the two materials as mutually exclusive misses how thin devices are engineered.

ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate

ASUS describes a rapid-cycle vapor chamber, optimized graphite sheets and an AeroActive Portal that works with an attached AeroActive Cooler. On its ROG Phone 7 Ultimate product page, ASUS claims six liquid-return channels, up to 168% improved thermal-cycle efficiency for its chamber design, a 16,000 mm² graphite-sheet area and 10% improved thermal efficiency for its graphite treatment. These are ASUS’s design-specific claims, not controlled evidence that every vapor chamber outperforms every graphite sheet. The optional AeroActive Cooler 7 is an external active-cooling accessory, not an internal chamber or sheet.

OPPO Find X5 Pro

OPPO’s 2022 description of the Find X5 Pro illustrates a layered stack rather than a single-material solution. It identifies a vapor chamber, a copper sheet with an ultra-thin graphite layer near the display and graphene film in other hot zones. OPPO also says the copper-and-graphite display layer has a structural function. The company reported a 50% improvement in the graphene film’s thermal conductivity compared with its first-generation process. That is a within-product-generation manufacturer comparison, not a head-to-head benchmark against a vapor chamber. The explanation is available through OPPO’s 2022 release.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Samsung’s Galaxy S7-era page is useful for understanding the phase-change concept and its contrast with a conventional thermal-spreader sheet. It should be read as a historical design explanation, not as proof that all later phones use the same chamber, fluid or layout.

What comparative testing actually shows

An indexed abstract for Hsu, Chu, Kusuma and Patel, presented at the 2026 IEEE Semiconductor Thermal Measurement and Management Symposium, reports a direct comparison in a smartphone-display setup. The experiment used a laser heater and infrared thermometers, with both constant-power and transient heating. According to the abstract, an ultra-thin vapor chamber produced a much lower measured junction temperature than a graphite sheet in that arrangement, and combining two graphite layers with the chamber reduced junction temperature further.

The available record does not publish the numerical temperatures or a percentage advantage. It therefore supports a narrower conclusion: in that tested display stack and under those stated conditions, the chamber arrangement performed better than the single graphite-sheet arrangement, while the combined stack performed better still. It does not establish a universal ranking for every phone, thickness or workload. The abstract index is at EurekaMag; consult the full conference paper before relying on detailed methods or numerical values.

How to compare two real phones

Material names are only the starting point. Use the following questions when comparing handset thermal designs or interpreting a teardown.

1. Does the spreader touch the actual heat sources?

Map the processor, modem and radio, charging circuitry, battery, display driver and camera components. A chamber or sheet that misses a major source may offer little benefit there. Conversely, a smaller part placed directly over the dominant source can outperform a larger part with a poor interface.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

2. What are the footprint and thickness?

Record the spreader’s area, shape, thickness and position. A large sheet can distribute heat widely; a chamber may provide efficient transport within a smaller outline. Manufacturer diagrams often show only selected dimensions, so avoid inferring total coverage from a marketing illustration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. What interfaces connect the layers?

Heat must cross adhesive, thermal pads, graphite coatings, copper, shields and structural parts. Contact pressure, flatness and interface resistance can dominate the result. An isolated conductivity figure for graphite or a chamber’s fluid does not describe the complete phone path.

4. What workload and duration were measured?

Short bursts, sustained gaming, high-resolution video recording, cellular uploads and fast charging stress different sources. A phone can look excellent in a brief benchmark and throttle during a long session. Compare tests with matched power, duration, ambient temperature, orientation, airflow and software settings.

5. What outcome matters?

  • Junction temperature: indicates conditions at a chip or device interface.
  • Sustained performance: shows whether the phone maintains clock speeds after heat builds up.
  • Surface temperature: describes touch comfort and heat distribution, not necessarily chip temperature.
  • Battery and display limits: heat may be routed away from one component while constraining another.
  • Throttling behavior: reveals how firmware trades speed, power and temperature over time.

6. How strong is the evidence?

Independent, controlled measurements are more useful for a head-to-head comparison than a manufacturer’s product explanation. A credible comparison states dimensions, interface materials, input power, ambient conditions, orientation, airflow and whether readings represent a transient peak or steady state. If those controls are absent, treat the result as directional rather than definitive.

How to read manufacturer efficiency claims

Claim Scope stated by the source How to interpret it
Up to 168% improved thermal-cycle efficiency ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate rapid-cycle vapor chamber, 2023 product page A manufacturer claim for that chamber design; not a universal vapor-chamber advantage
10% improved thermal efficiency ASUS optimized graphite-sheet treatment on the same product page A design-specific claim; the metric should not be merged with the chamber figure
50% improved graphene-film thermal conductivity OPPO’s 2022 comparison with its first-generation process for Find X5 Pro A within-generation process comparison, not a chamber-versus-graphite benchmark

These figures use different baselines and metrics. Combining them into one score would create a false ranking. Look for the test setup and denominator, not just the largest percentage.

What users feel in practice

A spreader changes the distribution of heat; it does not repeal the phone’s energy balance. If a processor consumes 8 watts during a demanding task, roughly that energy still has to leave the device. A chamber can move it rapidly to a frame or back cover, and graphite can spread it across a broad area, but the enclosure and surrounding air ultimately determine how quickly it leaves.

That is why a phone with effective cooling may feel warm over a larger patch while avoiding a painful hot spot. A cooler touch surface is not guaranteed simply because a device contains a chamber, and a warm surface is not proof that its thermal design is poor. Evaluate temperature distribution together with sustained performance, battery behavior and throttling.

Can you add graphite or a vapor chamber yourself?

Internal thermal stacks are model-specific. Generic graphite tape, replacement sheets or an unverified vapor chamber can interfere with antennas, battery clearances, display bonding, shielding, water resistance and pressure-sensitive interfaces. The available evidence does not establish safe compatibility or reliable gains from user-applied materials, so an internal “upgrade” is not a general recommendation.

For a repair, identify the exact phone model and use a verified parts source and service procedure. For gaming, an external active cooler is a different category: it removes heat at the outside of the phone and must match the handset’s attachment point and control method. It should not be confused with replacing the internal spreader.

A practical checklist for buying or reviewing a phone

  1. Identify which components generate the most heat for your use: gaming, charging, cameras, cellular data or a bright display.
  2. Find out whether the phone uses a vapor chamber, graphite, both or another spreader, and note the stated coverage rather than relying on the label alone.
  3. Look for independent sustained-load measurements with ambient temperature, power and test duration disclosed.
  4. Check whether the test reports chip temperature, surface temperature, performance retention or all three.
  5. Consider the enclosure and hand position: moving heat into the frame can improve chip conditions while making the side rails warmer.
  6. For long gaming sessions, evaluate software controls and compatible external cooling as part of the system, not as proof that the internal materials are equivalent.

Bottom line

Choose the phone with the better complete thermal implementation, not the one whose specification sheet names the more impressive material. Vapor chambers excel at phase-change transport from concentrated sources; graphite sheets excel at thin, broad in-plane spreading. The strongest designs can combine them, connect them with low-resistance interfaces and use firmware and enclosure design to manage the resulting heat. Only matched measurements under your workload can show which implementation is cooler, more comfortable or better at sustaining performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are vapor chambers always better than graphite sheets in phones?

No. They use different mechanisms and can be combined. Performance depends on placement, area, interfaces, enclosure and workload; a material name alone cannot establish a winner.

Does a graphite sheet cool a phone by itself?

No. It spreads heat laterally. The phone still needs connected structural layers and an environmental path to dissipate that heat.

Why can a well-cooled phone feel warmer over a larger area?

Effective spreading can reduce a concentrated hot spot by distributing the same heat across more of the frame, back or display. Surface warmth and chip temperature are different measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install generic graphite tape as a cooling upgrade?

It is not a generally safe or proven upgrade. Internal stacks are model-specific, and an incorrect sheet can affect clearances, antennas, bonding, shielding or water resistance.

What should an independent comparison report?

It should disclose heat-source placement, spreader dimensions, interfaces, input power, ambient conditions, orientation, airflow, test duration and whether results are transient or steady state, along with chip and surface temperatures or sustained performance.
