The Vantrue Nexus 5S is a four-channel dash cam built for drivers who want to record both the road and the cabin—not for buyers chasing the sharpest possible road footage. Its front and rear camera units provide two outward-facing views and two views into the vehicle. That makes it especially useful for rideshare drivers and others who need passenger coverage. The trade-offs are a bulky front unit, more involved installation, an optional hardwire kit for parking monitoring, and video resolution below 4K.
What the Vantrue Nexus 5S records
The N5S uses two camera units: a front unit that records the road ahead and the front cabin, and a rear unit that records behind the vehicle and the rear cabin. TechRadar lists the four fields of view as 158° front, 160° rear, 158° interior, and 160° rear interior. Those overlapping views offer broad coverage, but “near-360-degree” is a description of coverage, not a guarantee of gap-free spherical recording. Mounting position and the vehicle’s interior still affect what each lens can see.

Vantrue lists four STARVIS 2 sensors on its N5S product page. For the stream specifications, its technical comparison gives 1944p for the front camera and 1080p for the auxiliary streams, at 30fps. The comparison lists a 3.19-inch display.
The practical distinction is coverage versus detail. The N5S provides more angles than a conventional front-and-rear camera setup, but it is not a 4K/60fps system. If identifying distant road details is your main priority, a higher-resolution two- or three-camera model may be a better fit.

How good is the video?
Independent reviews report solid footage across the views, but their observations are not a guarantee that every plate will be readable in every scene. Digital Camera World found the front camera’s daylight footage very good and generally read plates on cars directly ahead. At night, its reviewer described the front sensor as low-noise, with passing plates just about visible when footage was paused. The reviewer also says the rear camera uses the same type of sensor as the front. See the Digital Camera World review.
TechRadar’s reviewer tested a loan unit in an SUV over a couple of weeks, including day and night journeys, and described footage from all angles as solid with dependable low-light performance. The reviewer also found that 5GHz file transfer and the app made managing four streams smooth. Vantrue supplied the camera and microSD card for that review. These are the reviewer’s findings, not results from a test of every vehicle or setup. TechRadar did not test parking features because the loan camera was not hardwired. Details are in its hands-on review.
Who benefits most from the extra cabin cameras?
Rideshare and taxi drivers
Two inward-facing views can capture both front occupants and the rear cabin, which is the N5S’s clearest advantage for drivers who regularly carry passengers. Digital Camera World considers it compelling for regular rideshare use. Whether that coverage is appropriate also depends on local rules and how you notify passengers; camera capability alone does not settle those questions.
Families, fleets, and personal drivers
The extra cabin view may matter to families or fleet operators who have a specific reason to document activity inside the vehicle. For personal driving without a need for cabin footage, however, you would be paying for extra cameras and taking on extra installation without using the system’s defining feature.
Installation, parking mode, and storage
Check the vehicle before buying
The front unit has several lenses and is chunkier than a basic dash cam. The rear unit also needs mounting and a cable run. Before purchase, check windshield space and sight lines, the layout of the rear window, and a practical cable route between the two units. Tom’s Guide likewise flags the bulky front camera and tricky installation in its two-week review.

Parking monitoring needs a power plan
Vantrue advertises parking monitoring on its product page, but the hands-on review says an optional hardwire kit is needed to keep the camera powered while the vehicle is parked. If parking recording is part of your reason for buying, account for the kit and the additional installation work. A bundle may include a VP03 hardwire kit, but package contents vary; verify the selected bundle rather than assuming the kit is included.
Plan storage and confirm card compatibility
Four streams generate many files, so storage deserves attention. TechRadar’s reviewer says a 512GB card may be useful. Vantrue’s product listing advertises support up to 1TB, while its technical comparison lists 512GB as the maximum. Because the manufacturer’s own sources differ, do not rely on an uncaveated capacity claim: check the manual for the exact regional model and confirm card compatibility before buying. Choose a suitable high-endurance card for continuous recording, and check whether the bundle you select already includes one.
How to decide whether it is worth it
The N5S makes the most sense when having two cabin views is a concrete need. For a buyer comparing it with a two- or three-camera dash cam, judge the options against the same practical questions:
- Coverage: Do you need both front and rear cabin views, or only road-facing cameras?
- Road detail: Compare front and rear resolution, frame rate, low-light performance, and HDR or WDR features—not just the number of lenses.
- Installation: Can you fit the front unit without compromising your sight line, and route the rear cable cleanly?
- Parking use: Does your chosen setup include the power accessory needed for parked recording?
- Total setup: Include the camera, compatible card, hardwire kit if needed, and any optional CPL filter. Confirm which items are actually included in the selected bundle.
Digital Camera World names the Thinkware Q850 and 70mai T800 as alternatives. Its review describes the T800 as offering 4K front and rear cameras plus one cabin camera, while the N5S adds a second cabin view. Models and prices can change, so check current specifications before choosing; the comparison is discussed in the review.
Price and availability are snapshots
When Vantrue’s US product page was accessed on October 3, 2026, it showed a $419.99 listed sale price against a $459.99 regular price, and the base camera was marked sold out. This is a dated listing, not a dependable current price or an assurance of availability. The bundles shown on that page may differ in included accessories, so check the live listing and contents for the exact option you are considering.
