Vanadium compounds have shown insulin-like effects in laboratory studies and diabetic animals, but they have not been shown to provide a safe, lasting diabetes treatment for people. Human studies have been few and short, and proposed cancer and antiparasitic uses remain research directions—not established therapies. The field’s persistence reflects an unresolved drug-development question, not proof that vanadium works clinically.
Why vanadium attracted medical interest
Vanadium is a trace element whose compounds can affect biological signaling. Some forms, including vanadate and vanadyl compounds, can mimic certain actions of insulin in cells and diabetic rodents. Their resemblance to phosphate helps explain why they can interact with signaling pathways, but biological activity alone does not establish a useful treatment.

“Vanadium” is not one interchangeable medicine. Inorganic salts such as vanadyl sulfate and organic complexes such as BEOV differ in formulation and may differ in how they behave in the body. Findings for one compound cannot be assumed to apply to another.
Does vanadium help diabetes?
It has produced promising experimental results, but clinical benefit in people has not been established. A 2016 review by José L. Domingo and Mercedes Gómez found comparatively strong evidence in diabetic rodents but only a few positive human studies, all short in duration. The authors concluded: “We conclude that vanadium administration for the treatment of human diabetes is misplaced.” Read the review in Food and Chemical Toxicology.

This gap matters: changes in glucose-related measurements in a small or brief study do not show that a treatment improves health over time, nor that its risks are acceptable for chronic use. The human evidence described in that review is limited and historical.
What happened with BEOV?
BEOV—bis(ethylmaltolato)oxovanadium(IV), also called AKP-020—is an example of a vanadium compound that advanced beyond animal research. A 2009 review reported historical phase I work and a phase IIa study in people with type 2 diabetes. The study involved seven participants receiving 20 mg daily for 28 days and two placebo controls. Its small size and short duration cannot establish efficacy, replication, or long-term safety. A separate review reported that BEOV trials had been provisionally abandoned; these historical accounts do not establish the program’s current status or clinical availability. See the 2009 review.

Other proposed medical uses
Reviews also discuss vanadium complexes in cancer and parasitic-disease research. These are proposed applications, not approved treatments or evidence of patient benefit. Why translation to a medicine is difficult
The same broad activity that makes vanadium compounds scientifically interesting can complicate drug development. Effects on multiple pathways may reach unintended targets; reviews also discuss possible reactive oxygen species, tissue accumulation, and uncertainty about consequences of long-term administration. Safety therefore depends on the particular compound, dose, route, and duration. Short-term tolerability of one formulation would not establish class-wide or chronic safety. That is why animal findings and a small human trial are not enough to recommend treatment. A useful medicine would need evidence for a defined formulation and dose, meaningful benefits in people, and an acceptable safety profile over the period it would be used.
Is vanadium safe to take or an approved treatment?
Availability as a dietary supplement is not evidence that vanadium has been established as a disease treatment. The FDA says dietary supplements are not approved for safety and effectiveness before they reach the market; products intended to treat disease are subject to drug requirements. In its 2022-hosted ICH Q3D(R2) guidance on elemental impurities, the FDA states that an essential biological role for vanadium in humans has not been established. The guidance estimates total dietary intake at 10–60 µg per day and sets an oral permitted daily exposure of 120 µg per day for its elemental-impurity framework. The record supports a continuing research interest in vanadium’s biological effects and potential medical applications. It does not establish that particular researchers are currently pursuing a specific program or explain their personal motivations. The responsible account is about the persistence of a research question: whether carefully selected compounds can turn biological activity into a treatment with demonstrated benefit and acceptable risk. So far, that question remains unresolved for human diabetes and the other proposed uses discussed here.
