Choose Vampire Survivors for real-time movement, automatically firing attacks, and fast build choices under pressure. Choose Vampire Crawlers if you would rather plan card combos turn by turn and explore a dungeon between fights. The games share characters, items, enemies, and a snowballing-build feel, but they ask you to play in very different ways. Crawlers is a spin-off, not simply another real-time Survivors run.
How the gameplay differs
Vampire Survivors: move, survive, and build on the fly
Vampire Survivors is a top-down time-survival game with roguelite progression. You steer a character around an arena while attacks fire automatically. Defeated enemies drop experience; when you level up, you choose weapons or items to add or improve. The immediate challenge is staying alive as enemy waves grow more dangerous while shaping a build that can clear them.

That makes positioning part of the build: where you move affects which threats you can avoid and how your automatically firing attacks meet the crowd. Your choices arrive in quick bursts at level-ups, but the action continues around them.

Vampire Crawlers switches to a first-person dungeon crawl with turn-based, card-driven combat. You explore floors and points of interest, build a deck, and play cards in ascending mana order. Each card can boost the next card’s effect, so the order matters; Wild cards can extend a combo.
#1 Best Overall
Experience adds cards as a run progresses. Chests can provide power-ups and gems used to customize cards. The action can resolve quickly, but the combat decisions are still discrete turns: you choose what to play and how to sequence it rather than continuously steering through an arena.
How progression and build-making compare
| What you are deciding | Vampire Survivors | Vampire Crawlers |
|---|---|---|
| Moment-to-moment play | Position in a real-time top-down arena while attacks fire automatically. | Explore a first-person dungeon and make selectable card plays in turn-based fights. |
| Run build | Add or improve weapons and passive items at level-ups; combine them with movement and positioning. | Add cards as experience accumulates, then order plays by mana cost to build combos. Wilds can extend a combo. |
| Run rewards and customization | Enemies drop experience for level-up choices. | Chests provide power-ups and gems for card customization; dungeon points of interest shape what you pursue. |
| Between-run progression | Gold funds upgrades that help future runs. | Unlocks and permanent stat upgrades carry progression between runs. |
Both games aim for a payoff in which a collection of upgrades becomes much more powerful than its parts. The difference is how you assemble it: Survivors combines weapons and items while you manage space and threats; Crawlers combines cards through mana order, combo extensions, and dungeon choices.

Which game should you play?
- Pick Vampire Survivors if you want immediate arcade action, continuous movement, automatically firing attacks, and quick upgrade decisions amid increasingly dense enemy waves.
- Pick Vampire Crawlers if you want deliberate tactical choices, card-order puzzles, combo sequencing, and exploration between encounters.
- Try both if the shared world is the draw. Crawlers brings familiar Survivors characters, weapons, enemies, zones, items, and visual motifs into a different genre. Recognizable content does not make the two mechanically interchangeable.
In an Xbox Wire interview, poncle founder and CEO Luca Galante summed up Crawlers this way: “This is just a dungeon crawler you play with cards!” That is his description of the spin-off, not a claim that its play loop matches Survivors.

Vampire Crawlers launched on April 21, 2026. Poncle named Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation for launch. Its FAQ listed mobile versions as planned for later in 2026; the publisher materials available as of October 7, 2026, do not confirm whether those versions had launched, so mobile availability is unresolved here.

Poncle’s launch pricing was £8.99, $9.99, €9.99, and ¥1200, with a note that console prices may vary. These are launch prices, not a guarantee of today’s regional price or discount. Check the relevant store for current availability and pricing. Both games support controllers according to their official listings or FAQ. Poncle’s FAQ said cross-save was unavailable at Crawlers launch and that it was investigating it for the mobile ports; current cross-save status is not established here.
Poncle estimated Crawlers at 20–30 hours to complete, with additional time for every unlock. That is the publisher’s estimate, not an independently measured average.

Steam review percentages are dated storefront snapshots, not fixed scores or a clean head-to-head measure. On October 7, 2026, Steam showed Crawlers at 95% positive recent English reviews from 385 reviews and 94% positive overall from 8,521 reviews; Survivors was at 94% positive recent English reviews from 960 reviews and 98% positive overall from 128,205 reviews. The review windows and audience sizes differ, and the figures can change.
