Valve is developing a first-party, swap-in deluxe strap for Steam Frame that combines a larger or hot-swappable battery with premium off-ear audio based on the company’s Valve Index approach. The accessory is not yet orderable: Valve has published no price, release date, battery capacity, weight, final connector design or regional availability.
What Valve has confirmed
Road to VR reported on October 15, 2026, that Valve is working on a deluxe Steam Frame headstrap with hot-swappable batteries and Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR) drivers. PC Gamer separately reported a swap-in strap with Index-style off-ear audio and hot-swappable batteries, but no launch information.

In an interview transcript published through an IGN transcript mirror, Valve described the project as a possibility rather than a finished product: “One of those things that we’re looking at is a potential strap that would offer a larger battery or hot swappable battery solution so that we could maybe deliver a first party version of something like that.” The wording means development is confirmed, while the final hardware and release plan are not.
Why Steam Frame needs an upgraded strap
The current Steam Frame is built around a modular headstrap. Valve’s official product page says the strap includes integrated dual audio drivers and a rechargeable battery mounted at the rear, while the core headset module can be separated from the strap.

That design makes a strap replacement technically meaningful: battery and audio hardware can be upgraded without replacing the detachable core. It also leaves two practical complaints unresolved in the launch configuration—standalone endurance and audio that does not provide the same off-ear experience associated with Valve Index.
What the deluxe strap is expected to add
A larger or swappable battery
Valve has described two related possibilities: a larger battery, a hot-swappable battery system, or both. A hot-swappable design would let a user replace a depleted pack with a charged one instead of waiting beside a charger. Valve has not stated the proposed capacity, the number of packs supported, whether batteries would be user-removable without tools, or whether a replacement pack would be sold separately.

Index-style off-ear audio
The planned strap is intended to move Steam Frame toward Valve Index’s off-ear speaker experience. Its proposed BMR drivers would sit away from the ears rather than sealing them with conventional headphones or earbuds. That architecture can preserve awareness of room sounds and avoid putting pressure directly on the ears, but Valve has not published loudness, frequency-response, distortion or other performance measurements for the Steam Frame strap.

Steam Frame battery and charging figures
Valve lists a 21.6 Wh rechargeable headset battery and USB-C charging of up to 45 W. Steam Support estimates about 1.5 hours for a full recharge when using a compatible 45 W power supply. The same guidance says charging from a computer or a lower-power adapter is expected to take about 3.5 hours.

Those are charging estimates, not a promise of play time. Actual endurance depends on the selected mode, display and wireless workload; PC Gamer’s testing placed play time at roughly one to two hours under its review conditions.
How to extend Steam Frame use now
The most defensible interim accessory is a USB-C power bank that can deliver 45 W. This follows Valve’s maximum charging specification and does not depend on the unannounced strap.

- Use a USB-C cable rated for the bank’s output and connect it to Steam Frame’s charging port.
- Keep the bank and cable secured so they do not pull on the headset or interfere with the strap’s movement.
- Allow extra time if the bank, cable or charging mode supplies less than 45 W; Valve’s approximately 1.5-hour estimate applies to a compatible 45 W supply.
A power bank is an immediate way to keep charging available, but it is not evidence of a particular extra number of play hours. Capacity, output efficiency and the headset’s workload determine the result.

Modularity and possible third-party accessories
Valve has said it hopes third parties will make Steam Frame accessories. The official hardware documentation identifies both a front expansion port and a modular strap, creating room for replacement straps, battery modules, audio upgrades and powered expansion accessories.

Release timing and unanswered questions
PC Gamer described the strap as “coming soon,” but its report did not include a launch date. Valve has not announced when orders will open. Until an official listing appears, “in development” or “forthcoming” is more accurate than calling the strap available.

If long sessions are your priority, the announced strap is the accessory to watch because it addresses endurance without requiring a new headset core. If you need more operating time immediately, a 45 W USB-C power bank is the clearest option supported by Valve’s published charging specification. Anyone waiting for Index-style audio should postpone a purchase decision based on the deluxe strap until Valve publishes final specifications, pricing and a release date.
