Valve Index FAQ: Compatibility, Controllers, Base Stations, and Replacement Parts

By Freedom251 Team · · 7 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve Index works with either the original HTC Vive (1.0) base stations or Valve (2.0) base stations, but the two generations cannot be combined in one room. You need a VR-ready PC, a direct DisplayPort 1.2 or newer connection, SteamVR, and at least one SteamVR-tracking base station; two stations are the practical recommendation for room-scale play.

Index controllers are compatible with Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro headsets that support SteamVR Tracking. Valve’s catalog lists separate left and right replacement controllers, a two-pack face gasket, and a replacement tether. Availability changes, so match every replacement to the exact part and tracking generation already in your setup.

Valve Index compatibility at a glance

The Index is a tethered PC VR system, not a standalone headset. Its tracking, display and cameras depend on a computer, SteamVR software and Lighthouse-compatible base stations.

Item What Index supports Important limit
Base stations Original HTC Vive 1.0 or Valve 2.0 stations Do not mix 1.0 and 2.0 stations in the same setup
Tracking quantity One station minimum; two recommended One is suitable for seated or standing use, but two improve reliability
Controllers Index controllers with Index, HTC Vive or HTC Vive Pro headsets supporting SteamVR Tracking Left and right controllers are separate products
Computer connection DisplayPort 1.2 or newer and USB HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are not supported
Operating systems Windows 10, SteamOS and Linux Install current graphics drivers and SteamVR

What you need before setting up an Index

Computer and graphics requirements

Steam lists Windows 10, SteamOS and Linux as supported operating systems. The minimum graphics guidance is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD RX 480. Steam recommends an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or better for a more comfortable margin with demanding VR software. These are baseline guidance, not a guarantee that every game will run at a particular frame rate.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Connect the headset directly to a DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output. Index does not support HDMI, including DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters. USB 2.0 or newer is required for the headset connection; USB 3.0 or newer is needed for the headset’s pass-through cameras. If your computer has several ports, use a direct motherboard or graphics-card connection rather than a hub or video converter.

Software and space

Install Steam and SteamVR, update the graphics driver, and run Steam’s official VR-readiness test before mounting hardware. For room-scale play, clear at least 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft). Remove furniture, cables, pets and other obstacles from that footprint. Seated and standing-only play can use less space because you are not walking around the boundary.

Which base stations work with Valve Index?

Generation 1.0: original Vive stations

Original HTC-branded Vive base stations are tracking generation 1.0. Index can use them, so an existing Vive room does not automatically require new stations. Keep every station in that room on the same 1.0 generation.

Generation 2.0: Valve stations

Valve-branded 2.0 base stations also work with Index. They are the appropriate replacement when the rest of your room already uses 2.0 hardware or when you are building a new 2.0 setup. A replacement must match the generation already installed.

Tracking generation Works with Index? Use when Can it be mixed with the other generation?
1.0 (HTC-branded) Yes Your existing room uses 1.0 stations No
2.0 (Valve-branded) Yes Your existing room uses 2.0 stations or you are starting a 2.0 room No

Can you mix 1.0 and 2.0 base stations?

No. Steam’s tracking guidance says 1.0 (HTC-branded) and 2.0 (Valve-branded) base stations will not work with each other in the same VR setup. This is a generation incompatibility, not a matter of firmware settings. If a room contains one of each, remove or replace one generation so all active stations match.

How many base stations does Index need?

Seated or standing-only use

Steam lists one base station as the minimum. One can be enough for a seated simulator or a standing experience where you do not turn and move extensively. Two are still recommended because a single station has more opportunities to lose line of sight when you rotate, lean or raise a controller.

Room-scale use

Use at least two stations for room-scale play. Place them at opposing corners or ends of the play area with a clear view of the space, then complete room setup in SteamVR. The minimum clear area is 2 m by 1.5 m. For spaces larger than 5 m by 5 m (about 16 ft by 16 ft), Steam says additional stations may improve coverage and tracking accuracy. All stations in the expanded room must still be the same tracking generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Index controllers compatible with Vive headsets?

Yes. Index controllers are designed for Valve Index or HTC Vive headsets with base stations, and the product specification extends compatibility to headsets that support SteamVR Tracking, including HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro. They can therefore be used as an upgrade for a compatible Vive headset, provided the room has compatible Valve or HTC Vive base stations.

Controller-side compatibility

Replacement controllers are handed: the official catalog lists a Valve Index Replacement Left Controller and a Valve Index Replacement Right Controller. A left controller cannot substitute for a right controller, so check the side before ordering. Pair each controller through SteamVR after connecting the headset and powering the controller.

What is and is not interchangeable

  • Index controllers can track with Index, Vive and Vive Pro headsets that support SteamVR Tracking.
  • The controllers do not remove the need for base stations; tracking still comes from the Lighthouse system.
  • A room using 1.0 stations must remain entirely 1.0, and a room using 2.0 stations must remain entirely 2.0.
  • Controller side, connector fit and exact model should be verified before buying a replacement.

Valve Index replacement parts

Valve’s Steam catalog names four relevant replacement products. Store stock and regional shipping can change, so treat the catalog listing as the authoritative part name and confirm availability when you buy.

Catalog item Purpose Selection check Details not established by the catalog entry
Valve Index Replacement Left Controller Replaces a failed or damaged left controller Confirm left side and SteamVR-tracking compatibility Current stock, price, warranty terms and included accessories vary
Valve Index Replacement Right Controller Replaces a failed or damaged right controller Confirm right side and SteamVR-tracking compatibility Current stock, price, warranty terms and included accessories vary
Face Gasket for Valve Index Headset (2 Pack) Replaces the removable face interface Confirm it is specifically for Valve Index Material, fit details and current stock can vary by listing
Valve Index Replacement Tether Replaces the headset tether cable Match the exact Index tether and connector arrangement Current stock, price and return terms can change

How to shop for a controller replacement

  1. Identify the failed side: left or right.
  2. Check that the listing names a Valve Index controller and supports SteamVR Tracking.
  3. Confirm whether the item is new, refurbished or used; condition is not interchangeable between listings.
  4. Read the seller’s warranty and return policy, because those terms are not fixed by the generic product name.
  5. Verify regional stock and shipping immediately before purchase.

How to shop for a tether or gasket

Search by the complete part name rather than a generic phrase such as “VR cable” or “headset cushion.” The tether must have the correct Index connectors and length; a cable that fits another headset may not carry Index’s display and USB signals. For a gasket, verify the listing says “Valve Index Headset” and check the return policy in case the fit or material differs from your preference.

Index setup: a reliable order of operations

  1. Prepare the PC. Confirm a GTX 970/RX 480 minimum class GPU, or GTX 1070-or-better recommended class, a supported operating system, a free DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output and an available USB port.
  2. Install software. Install Steam and SteamVR, then update the graphics driver. Run the VR-readiness test before arranging the room.
  3. Choose one station generation. Use all 1.0 or all 2.0 stations. Do not combine them.
  4. Mount the stations. Position two stations to see the complete 2 m by 1.5 m play area, with obstacles cleared. Use one only for a seated or standing-only arrangement when that limitation is acceptable.
  5. Connect the headset. Use direct DisplayPort and USB connections. Do not use HDMI or a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.
  6. Pair controllers. Turn on the correct left and right controllers and pair them in SteamVR.
  7. Run room setup. Define the play area, keep the boundary inside the clear space and test tracking at the edges before starting a game.

Troubleshooting compatibility problems

Symptom Likely cause Action
A station is not detected Mixed 1.0 and 2.0 generations, power or line-of-sight problem Confirm every station is the same generation, check power and remove obstructions
Headset display stays blank HDMI, adapter or incorrect DisplayPort connection Connect directly to DisplayPort 1.2 or newer and remove adapters
Tracking drops when turning Only one station, blocked view or insufficient coverage Add a second matching-generation station, clear obstacles and rerun room setup
Controllers will not pair Wrong side replacement, depleted battery or SteamVR pairing state Verify left/right model, charge the controller and pair it again in SteamVR
Pass-through cameras do not work USB 2.0 connection where USB 3.0 is needed Move the headset to a USB 3.0-or-newer port
Replacement cable does not function Wrong cable type or connector arrangement Use the exact Valve Index Replacement Tether and confirm return eligibility

Practical buying decisions

You already own a Vive room

If your existing stations are HTC-branded 1.0 units, Index can use them. Buy another 1.0 station only if you need to replace or expand that same room; adding a 2.0 station is not a compatible upgrade.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

You already own a 2.0 room

Continue with Valve 2.0 stations. A 1.0 replacement will not join that setup, even though Index individually supports both generations.

You mainly sit at a desk

One matching station can satisfy the minimum, but two provide more dependable coverage when you turn or move your hands. Keep the play area clear around the chair and complete SteamVR’s room or standing setup.

You are replacing a controller

Order the exact left or right catalog item, then confirm condition, warranty, return terms and stock. Controller replacements are not sold as a universal left/right part.

What remains uncertain about long-term parts availability?

Valve’s published support and catalog information does not establish a definitive manufacturing end date or a permanent parts-service commitment. Replacement inventory, regional shipping and listing terms can change. Check the live catalog or retailer listing at the time of purchase rather than assuming a part will remain available.
