Valve’s September 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps update adds six heroes and substantial changes to Deadlock, but it does not signal a public launch. Valve says the game is still unfinished because important work on its core systems remains, and the studio wants player feedback to shape those systems before full release.
What Valve announced in City Never Sleeps
The update, dated September 29, 2026, includes a major visual update to the map and neutral characters, six new heroes, HUD updates, quality-of-life additions and accessibility options. That combination is not a contradiction: Valve is continuing to add content while developing the game. The studio says some of its work during 2026 appears in this update, but it still has core-game changes to make.
Who are the six new Deadlock heroes?
Contemporaneous coverage named the six as Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Dot Esports reported that their full ability kits had not yet been revealed in its September 30, 2026 update. The announcement and coverage describe the additions, not a guarantee that every hero was immediately available to play.

When were the new heroes scheduled to arrive?
In a report updated September 30, 2026, Dot Esports said players were voting in the pregame lobby on which hero would release next. The winning team’s votes counted double, as did each player’s first daily win. The outlet reported the following rollout schedule:

Why does Valve still call Deadlock unfinished?
Valve says adding new content does not mean the core game is ready for release. The studio described multiplayer development as risky and said putting the game in players’ hands early lets them help identify what is fun and what is not. In the update statement, Valve explained that after the Old Gods New Blood update, it still wanted to work on the core game before moving into later polish phases.
That remaining work includes progression and customization for heroes and the Hideout. Valve says it wants room to change those features significantly in response to feedback before the game is fully released. “Unfinished” is the developer’s description of the project’s development stage, not a claim that the game is broken.

What work is planned, and what is still uncertain?
Valve distinguishes between work it expects to tackle and ideas that remain tentative. The announcement says large item redesigns or additions and alternate modes are speculative and depend on playtesting. It also identifies the Midboss model and layout, Guardians and Walkers as important work still to be done, and says older hero remodels are expected to arrive gradually in future updates. Those are development intentions, not a dated release roadmap. The distinctions appear in Valve’s update statement.

No public-release date was given in Valve’s announcement. The six heroes and other changes are evidence of ongoing development, not proof that a public launch is imminent. PC Gamer’s September 30, 2026 coverage likewise framed the update as no sign of an imminent public release and noted that Valve had not set a clear milestone for moving into a polish phase.
