VALORANT uses three related but different systems: your visible rank tier, Rank Rating (RR), and a hidden matchmaking rating (MMR). Your rank and RR are what you see and earn through competitive results; MMR is Riot’s private estimate of your skill, used to build more even matches. Because those systems are separate, a win does not always award the same RR and a loss does not always remove the same amount.
This guide explains what each number means, why your gains and losses can feel uneven, what Riot changed in Patch 13.00, how Ascendant fits into the ladder, and which older rules you should not treat as current.

The three ratings behind a VALORANT competitive match
Players often use “rank” to describe everything in the competitive system, but Riot separates the visible progression track from the hidden value used for matchmaking. Understanding that separation explains most apparently strange RR results.

Visible rank tier
Your displayed tier is the badge shown in the Competitive interface. The modern ladder runs through Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant, with numbered divisions inside the lower tiers. Ascendant sits between Diamond and Immortal; Riot added it in Patch 5.0 to spread players across more skill bands and distinguish levels that had been crowded together. See the Patch 5.0 notes for Riot’s explanation.

A tier is a snapshot of your current visible progress, not a direct readout of the matchmaking system. Two players showing the same tier can have different hidden MMR values and therefore receive different RR adjustments after the same result.
Rank Rating (RR)
RR is the visible progress value that moves you through divisions and toward the next tier. Wins generally add RR and losses generally remove it, but Riot does not publish a single fixed win or loss amount that applies to every account. The amount is influenced by how your displayed rank compares with your hidden MMR, according to Riot’s conceptual explanation in Ask VALORANT: Rank Rating Edition (published March 18, 2021).
That article describes the direction of the adjustment rather than a permanent formula. Riot notes that calculations can be tuned, so treat the explanation as the system’s published model, not a promise that a particular match will award a particular number of RR.

Hidden matchmaking rating (MMR)
MMR is a rating you cannot inspect directly. Riot says it uses MMR to estimate skill and create fair matches, and that MMR can move more fluidly than your visible rank. Keeping the two values separate helps avoid abrupt visible-rank swings and makes an immediate demotion after a promotion less likely. A single match’s scoreboard cannot reveal your MMR, and Riot has not published the complete formula used to calculate it.
| System | What you can see | Main purpose | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank tier | Yes: badge and division in the client | Communicates your current competitive standing | Ascendant is between Diamond and Immortal since Patch 5.0 |
| RR | Yes: progress value in Competitive | Moves you toward promotion or away from it after results | Gains and losses respond to the rank/MMR relationship; exact current formula is not public |
| MMR | No: hidden from players | Targets opponents and teammates of comparable skill | Riot says it is separate from rank and can change faster than visible progression |
Why the same win can give different RR
Riot’s published model is based on convergence: visible rank gradually moves toward the level suggested by MMR. The comparison produces three broad outcomes.
MMR higher than displayed rank
If your hidden MMR is above your visible rank, Riot’s explanation says your wins tend to produce larger RR gains than your losses remove. The system is, conceptually, trying to bring the visible badge upward toward the skill level represented by MMR. This is why a player who is winning consistently may see relatively strong gains while climbing.

MMR and rank broadly aligned
When the two values are close, gains and losses tend to be more similar. Your visible progression then reflects the ordinary balance of wins and losses without a strong correction in either direction.
Displayed rank higher than MMR
If your visible rank is above the level indicated by MMR, Riot says wins tend to award less RR and losses tend to remove more. That asymmetry nudges the visible rating back toward the hidden estimate. It can feel as though the system is “holding you down,” but the published explanation is that RR is correcting a mismatch rather than judging one match in isolation.
These are tendencies, not guaranteed values. Riot’s 2021 explanation says the calculation may be adjusted, and the full current formula is not disclosed. Do not infer that personal kills, damage or another single performance statistic independently determines your rank; the available official explanation centers on results and the rank/MMR relationship.
What Patch 13.00 changed
Riot’s latest ranked source identified here is VALORANT Patch Notes 13.00. Riot says it adjusted RR calculations after allowing earlier MMR changes to settle, with the goal of helping players who consistently win feel less stuck. The note describes a change to calculations, not a new public RR table.
The same patch’s PC matchmaking update says: “We’ve made changes to our matchmaking to ensure the average rank of each team is within 1 sub-tier.” That is Riot’s stated aim for the updated system. It means team averages should be closer more often; it does not guarantee that every player in a lobby has the same badge, division or MMR. Party composition, region, platform and the available queue population can still affect a match.

How the visible rank ladder is organized
The named tiers provide a shared language for progression, but Riot’s official pages do not establish a current table of RR thresholds for every division. Avoid guides that present historical numbers as if they were guaranteed today.
| Tier group | What the player sees | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Iron through Diamond | Tier badge with numbered divisions and RR progress | Exact current thresholds and promotion behavior can change; verify in the live Competitive interface |
| Ascendant | A full tier between Diamond and Immortal | Introduced in Patch 5.0; older lists that skip it are outdated |
| Immortal | High-tier rank with visible progression | Current queue, demotion and party rules are not established by the cited pages |
| Radiant | Top competitive tier | Current leaderboard and eligibility requirements are not established by the cited pages |
Riot’s Patch 5.0 discussion explains the reason for adding Ascendant in terms of rank distribution, but it does not provide a current percentage of players in each tier. No current official rank-population statistic is established in the sources used here.
What you can and cannot learn from a match result
You can observe
- Your displayed tier, division and the RR change shown after the match.
- Whether your recent results are moving the visible rating up or down.
- The displayed ranks of players in the lobby, subject to the client’s presentation and the patch’s matchmaking rules.
You cannot directly observe
- Your numerical MMR or the MMR of another player.
- The exact weighting Riot applies to a win, loss, streak or other match information.
- A guarantee that one unusually good or bad personal performance will determine the RR result.
A large gain or loss is evidence that the system assigned that result under its current calculation; it is not a way to reverse-engineer your hidden rating. Looking at several matches gives more context than treating one post-game number as a diagnostic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesParty queues, placements and leaderboards: do not rely on old numbers
Competitive rules have changed across episodes and patches. The official pages cited here do not establish the exact current placement procedure, party-size restrictions, demotion thresholds or leaderboard requirements. Riot’s live Competitive interface and the newest official rules should take priority before you plan a climb around a specific number.
For historical context, Riot’s Episode 2 Act I Competitive Changes article from January 12, 2021 described then-current placement and progression rules, including a statement that Radiant had the top 500 players per region. That was a description of the leaderboard at that time, not proof of the requirement in 2026. Likewise, the 2020 closed-beta explainer documents an earlier system whose rank names and mechanics changed before launch.
Historical pages are useful for understanding why the system evolved, but their thresholds, reset rules and party restrictions should not be copied into a current guide without a newer Riot confirmation.

How matchmaking uses MMR in practice
Riot’s stated objective is to assemble teams whose players are close enough in skill to produce a fair contest. The Patch 13.00 PC change focuses on each team’s average displayed rank being within one sub-tier more often. “Average” matters: a team can still contain a mix of tiers while its aggregate falls within the target range.
Match quality is also constrained by the queue you enter. Region, platform, time of day, party composition and the number of available players affect how many legal combinations the system can consider. A sparse queue may make a lobby look less uniform than the patch’s target without proving that matchmaking ignored MMR.
Because MMR is hidden, rank badges are an imperfect proxy for lobby strength. A recently promoted player, a player climbing toward an MMR above their badge, and a player whose displayed rank is ahead of MMR may all appear in the same tier while receiving different RR adjustments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Competitive integrity: boosting and manipulated matches
Riot’s July 14, 2026 announcement, Playing Fair: Anti-boosting and other smurfing countermeasures, describes updated detection for boosting, win-trading and stream-sniping. Riot distinguishes ordinary play with friends from coordinated abuse intended to manipulate rank.
When Riot confirms manipulation, the announcement says consequences can include account suspension, reversions of rank and MMR, and removal or reversal of rewards tied to the affected progress. A high rank obtained through prohibited coordination is therefore not secure evidence of legitimate skill, and later reversions can change both visible progression and competitive rewards.
How to interpret an RR result without guessing the formula
- Record the displayed rank and RR before the match. This establishes the visible starting point.
- Check the result after the match. Note the win or loss and the RR amount shown by the client.
- Compare several results, not one. A pattern of larger gains than losses can be consistent with MMR being above displayed rank; the reverse pattern can be consistent with the opposite relationship.
- Check for a patch or Act change. Patch notes can alter calculations, so do not compare numbers from different systems as though they were generated by one formula.
- Use the live client for rules. For placements, party eligibility, demotion and leaderboard conditions, rely on the current Competitive screen or a current Riot announcement rather than a historical guide.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“My visible rank is my MMR.”
No. Riot explicitly describes MMR as hidden and separate from rank and RR.

“Every win should award the same RR.”
No. Riot’s model allows the rank/MMR relationship to change the direction and relative size of gains and losses, and the calculation can be tuned.
“A top-fragging loss should always protect my RR.”
The cited official explanation does not promise that personal statistics override the competitive result. Do not treat a scoreboard line as a published RR formula.
“A 2021 or beta rule is still the rule.”
No. Riot’s older pages describe earlier systems. Patch notes and the current client take precedence, especially for thresholds, placements, parties and leaderboards.
Recommended Free Tools
“A lobby with mixed badges proves matchmaking failed.”
No. Patch 13.00’s statement concerns each team’s average rank, not identical ranks for every player. Hidden MMR and queue conditions also matter.
Bottom line for climbing
Think of VALORANT Competitive as two tracks moving at different speeds: RR and your visible rank show progress, while hidden MMR guides the opponents and teammates Riot selects. The rank/MMR relationship can make wins worth more or less than losses, and Patch 13.00 adjusted that behavior while aiming for closer team averages on PC. Ascendant belongs between Diamond and Immortal, and old placement or leaderboard numbers should not be treated as current without confirmation. The only dependable way to know your present thresholds and queue eligibility is the live client and the latest Riot rules.
