Masters are the in-season international tournaments in the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT); Champions is the season-ending world championship. Riot’s 2026 season description calls Champions the final international event where the best team in the world is crowned. Winning Masters is a major achievement, but it is not the same as winning the VALORANT World Championship.

Masters is an in-season global checkpoint
Masters is where the strongest teams from the four territories meet before the season is complete. It is not a preliminary exhibition or a consolation event. The tournament has its own international title, and its results contribute to the season-long qualification race.
Because Masters occurs during the season, the teams arrive with more opportunities still ahead of them. A poor showing can damage a team’s momentum without necessarily ending its Champions hopes. Masters Santiago: the first 2026 global event
Masters Santiago is the first international event of the 2026 VCT season. It brings together 12 teams from the International Leagues and awards Championship Points.

London is described as a milestone in the Championship Points race. By this point, teams have more season results behind them, so the event is not only another international title opportunity; it is also an important indicator of which teams are building a strong route toward Champions.
Why Masters results matter beyond the trophy
A Masters event has two outcomes for a team:
- It can win or place highly at an international tournament.
- It can add Championship Points that remain relevant when the Champions field is selected.
That dual role makes Masters strategically important. A team may leave with a title, points, confidence and stronger evidence that its style works against opponents from other territories. Another team may fail to win but still improve its Champions position through the points it earns. The international trophy and the season-long qualification value are related, but they are not the same thing.

Riot’s 2026 handbook describes 16 teams competing for the Champions Trophy and the title of VALORANT World Champion. That wording is the key distinction: Masters winners are international champions for that event, while the Champions winner is the world champion for the VCT season.
Champions Shanghai’s 2026 field
Champions Shanghai has 16 teams. Each of the four territories sends four teams through two different qualification routes:
- The territory’s top two Stage 2 playoff teams.
- The territory’s top two Championship Point earners.
Four territories multiplied by four places per territory creates the 16-team field. The rule combines immediate late-season performance with consistency across the year.
Why the Champions qualification formula is different
Stage 2 playoff results reward teams that are strongest near the end of the regional season. Championship Points reward teams that built a strong record across the season’s qualifying events, including the international Masters tournaments.
This combination avoids relying on only one snapshot. A team can qualify by excelling in Stage 2, by accumulating enough points over time, or by doing both. The system also means that the last regional stage and the season-long standings can each produce meaningful changes to the final field.

Is Masters or Champions bigger in VALORANT?
Champions is bigger in prestige and season-wide meaning. It is the final event, has the 2026 title of VALORANT World Champion attached to it and awards the Champions Trophy. Masters is still one of the highest-level achievements in competitive VALORANT, but it represents success at a particular point in the season.
“Bigger” can mean several different things, so the comparison depends on the measure:

Does winning Masters automatically qualify a team for Champions?
Not as a separate automatic berth under the stated 2026 qualification rule. Masters awards Championship Points, and those points can help a team become one of its territory’s top two Championship Point earners. However, the Champions field is defined by Stage 2 playoff qualification plus Championship Points, not by an explicit “Masters winner receives a guaranteed slot” provision.

How a team reaches Champions in 2026
The Champions route is easier to understand when separated into two lanes.
Lane 1: Stage 2 playoff qualification
- A team competes in its territory’s Stage 2 competition.
- It reaches the Stage 2 playoffs.
- It finishes among the territory’s top two Stage 2 playoff teams.
- That result provides one of the territory’s Champions places.
Lane 2: Championship Points qualification
- A team earns Championship Points through the season’s qualifying results, including the international events that award them.
- Its total is compared with other teams from the same territory.
- If it finishes among that territory’s top two Championship Point earners, it receives a Champions place through the points route.
Each territory contributes two places through Stage 2 playoff performance and two through Championship Points, producing four places per territory and 16 overall. The practical effect is that a team cannot rely solely on an early international title or solely on one late regional run; it must meet one of the specified routes when the final field is determined.

Championship Points are best understood as a season-long qualification currency, not as a replacement for tournament wins. Their value is comparative: what matters is a team’s total relative to other teams in its territory and whether it finishes inside the two qualifying positions.

A team that appears safe on points can still need to verify the final standings and allocation rules. Conversely, a team outside the top two points places may still qualify by reaching the top two in the Stage 2 playoffs.
Common misunderstandings
“Masters is a lower-tier tournament”
No. Masters is a global VCT event with teams from the International Leagues. It has a major international title and affects the Championship Points race. It is lower than Champions only in the sense that it is not the season-ending world championship.
“Champions is just another Masters”
No. Champions has a different purpose, a larger 2026 field and the season’s world-title stakes. Its qualification system also combines Stage 2 results with Championship Points, rather than using the Stage 1 playoff route specified for Masters London.
“A Masters winner is guaranteed a Champions place”
The 2026 structure provided here does not state such an automatic guarantee. Masters points can help a team finish among its territory’s top two Championship Point earners, while Stage 2 playoff performance provides another route.

Separate the event champion from the broader points picture. The winner has an international title, but the full Champions implications depend on the points earned and on how other teams perform in subsequent regional and international events.
During Stage 1 and Masters London
Stage 1 playoff placement is the direct gateway to London: the top three from each territory qualify. London then becomes another international test and another milestone in the Championship Points race.
