The reliable way to improve Valor Mortis performance is to work in a controlled order: verify that your PC meets the current demo requirements, record a repeatable baseline, identify whether you have consistently low frame rate or occasional hitches, then change one setting at a time. Start with the upscaling options available in your build, followed by shadows and effects if the GPU is the limit. Use a frame cap and synchronization settings to improve frame pacing rather than chasing an unsteady peak number. The exact menu options may differ between builds: game-specific recommendations below come from an unofficial guide based on the Alpha demo, not a developer-verified universal preset.

Check the published requirements before changing settings

The current Steam store listing publishes requirements for the demo, not a guaranteed specification for the final release. Steam also states that the requirements may change before launch. They describe the hardware needed to run the demo; they do not promise a particular resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate.

Tier Processor Memory Graphics API Storage
Minimum demo specification AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-11700 16 GB RAM AMD Radeon RX 6700 or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super DirectX 12 50 GB on an SSD
Recommended demo specification AMD Ryzen 7 7700 or Intel Core i7-13700 16 GB RAM AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 DirectX 12 50 GB on an SSD

AMD’s own Valor Mortis page lists the same AMD-focused baseline: Windows 11, a Ryzen 7 3700X at minimum or Ryzen 7 7700 at the recommended level, 16 GB RAM, Radeon RX 6700 or RX 7900 GRE graphics, DirectX 12, and 50 GB of SSD storage. That page corroborates the AMD hardware; it is not a complete statement of NVIDIA requirements.

What the SSD requirement means

An SSD is a stated requirement for the demo. If the game is installed on a hard disk, moving it to a compatible internal SSD is a sensible prerequisite check, especially when loading areas or compiling shaders. It is not proof that an SSD will eliminate every hitch. Before buying one, verify your motherboard’s interface and physical format, choose enough capacity for the game and updates, and leave free space for normal operating-system overhead.

Establish a repeatable performance baseline

Do not change a dozen options and judge the result from a different scene. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation explains that frame rate and frame time expose different aspects of performance, while CPU, GPU, RAM, VRAM, and storage can all become bottlenecks.

  1. Write down your display resolution, current preset, upscaler selection and quality mode, frame-cap value, and VSync state.
  2. Choose a repeatable test: the same room, route, combat encounter, or traversal sequence. Record what happens when you turn the camera, enter a new area, and fight several enemies.
  3. Note whether the game is slow almost everywhere or normally smooth with brief pauses. Also record whether the problem appears during loading, traversal, combat effects, or only after changing areas.
  4. Change one option, replay the same sequence, and compare both average smoothness and the severity of the worst hitch. Keep a short written log so you can undo a change that harms image quality without helping pacing.

Persistent low frame rate versus intermittent hitches

If performance remains low throughout play, suspect a sustained CPU limit, GPU/rendering limit, insufficient VRAM, or a preset that is too demanding for the hardware. If the game is generally smooth but pauses for a moment, investigate hitches separately; lowering every graphics option may not address a storage, shader, overlay, or traversal event.

Apply graphics changes in the order most likely to help

The unofficial Valor Mortis DB guide describes an upscaler menu in the Alpha demo and recommends testing upscaling first. It also suggests reducing shadows and effects. Treat those recommendations as starting points: use only controls that are actually present in your installed build, and do not edit configuration files when a menu option is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Test the available upscaler

Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image for your display, usually reducing GPU work. The Alpha-demo guide reports DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and TSR options, but the official material does not confirm that every current build exposes all four. Select the choices your menu provides and compare the same scene at the same output resolution.

  • Begin with the highest quality mode that improves consistency without making the image distracting.
  • Drop one quality step only if the GPU remains the limiting resource and the first setting is insufficient.
  • Check fine geometry and distant edges. More aggressive reconstruction can introduce softness, ghosting, or shimmering.
  • DLSS compatibility: the fan guide says its demo path requires a supported RTX graphics card and a current driver. Do not assume that requirement applies to every upscaler or every future build.

2. Reduce shadows before lowering everything

Shadows can be expensive in scenes with several lights or moving characters. The unofficial guide’s practical suggestion is to move shadows from High to Medium and then test. This can recover GPU headroom while preserving more detail than dropping the entire preset.

3. Lower effects or post-processing if effects coincide with the slowdown

Effects and post-processing are worth testing when frame rate collapses during explosions, combat abilities, fog, particles, or other visual bursts. Reduce one category, repeat the same encounter, and keep the change only if frame pacing improves enough to justify the visual loss.

4. Keep TSR on if disabling it causes shimmer

The Alpha-demo guide reports visible shimmering when TSR anti-aliasing is disabled and recommends leaving it enabled. That is a reported quality trade-off, not a measured result for every build. If your menu lets you choose another reconstruction method, compare it in motion rather than judging a still screenshot.

5. Treat motion blur as a clarity preference

The guide suggests disabling motion blur to make enemy movement easier to read. That is a visibility preference, not evidence of a dependable frame-rate gain. Turn it off if you want a crisper view; leave it on if you prefer the intended cinematic presentation.

Compare settings by more than the FPS counter

When two configurations appear close, evaluate the trade-off across several dimensions:

  • Average rate versus frame-time consistency: a lower but steady result can feel better than a higher result with regular spikes.
  • Image quality: inspect foliage, thin geometry, distant edges, and camera pans for shimmer, ghosting, softness, or excessive blur.
  • GPU headroom: upscaling, shadows, effects, and output resolution primarily help when rendering work is the constraint; they may do little for a CPU-limited scene.
  • Responsiveness: compare camera movement and input timing after enabling a cap or any frame-generation feature your build actually exposes. A smoother counter is not automatically lower latency.
  • Symptom match: a setting that helps a sustained GPU load will not necessarily remove a one-second pause during traversal.

Use the same route and encounter for each comparison, and keep notes on both the benefit and the visual cost. There is no published universal preset or measured FPS gain that can replace testing on your hardware.

Use frame caps and VSync to improve frame pacing

A high peak FPS can still feel uneven when frame times fluctuate. Epic’s general VSync documentation explains that synchronization and caps affect tearing and perceived stutter; missing a cap can produce an abrupt pacing change. The fan guide suggests setting a cap slightly below the monitor’s refresh rate, but that is a testable suggestion rather than an official Valor Mortis recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Try the frame-cap and VSync controls exposed by your game build.
  2. Choose a cap your PC can sustain in the demanding part of your repeatable test, not a number reached only in empty rooms.
  3. Compare capped and uncapped play for camera movement, input response, tearing, and the severity of frame-time spikes.
  4. Keep the combination that feels consistent. A cap above what the system can hold will not create stability, and a very low cap can make controls feel less responsive.

Do not publish or rely on a fixed FPS promise for this game. The available requirements are specifications, not benchmark results, and no developer-confirmed performance delta establishes what any setting will deliver on a particular PC.

Investigate stutter as a separate problem

Shader-compilation and traversal hitches

The unofficial Alpha-demo guide describes shader-compilation and traversal hitches. It suggests allowing initial shader compilation to finish, testing with overlays disabled, and installing the game on an SSD. Epic’s engine documentation independently identifies storage access as one possible bottleneck, but neither source proves that every Valor Mortis hitch has the same cause.

  • After an update or first launch, allow any visible shader-preparation process to complete before judging normal play.
  • Temporarily disable performance overlays, capture tools, chat overlays, and similar hooks one at a time to see whether a particular overlay changes the symptom.
  • Repeat the same route after changing only one variable. A second run may differ because assets or shaders were already loaded, so record that fact rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix.
  • Confirm that the game is on an SSD and that the drive is not nearly full or reporting errors.

If the computer shuts down during shader compilation

A shutdown is a hardware-safety issue, not a normal stutter. The fan guide recommends checking temperatures, airflow, power delivery, overclocks or undervolts, and graphics drivers. Stop stressing the system until those basics are stable; do not assume the game alone identifies the failing component.

Match the remedy to the likely bottleneck

Observed pattern Most useful first tests What the result tells you
Low performance in nearly every scene, GPU usage high Enable or strengthen upscaling; reduce shadows, effects, or output resolution The rendering workload may exceed available GPU headroom
Low performance in busy simulation or combat while GPU usage is not saturated Use a repeatable CPU-heavy scene; close background tasks; compare a sensible frame cap The processor or game-thread workload may be limiting frame production
Normal play with brief pauses during area changes Check SSD installation, allow shader preparation, disable overlays for a test Storage access, shader work, or an injected overlay may be involved
Image becomes unstable after changing reconstruction Return to a higher-quality upscaler mode or TSR; inspect motion and fine edges The performance gain is costing unacceptable image quality
Uneven feel despite a high displayed FPS Test a sustainable cap with VSync options Frame-time consistency, not the peak counter, is the problem

These observations are diagnostic clues, not proof. Epic’s documentation lists CPU, GPU, memory, VRAM, and storage as possible sources, so confirm a suspected limit by changing one related setting and repeating the same scene.

When an upgrade is justified

Below the published graphics baseline

If your GPU is below the Steam demo’s minimum Radeon RX 6700 or GeForce RTX 2070 Super class, settings changes may not provide enough headroom. First test upscaling and lower-cost visual options, then decide whether the remaining workload justifies an upgrade. Because the listing says demo specifications may change, treat those GPU tiers as the current published baseline rather than a permanent final-release guarantee.

Using a hard drive or lacking enough SSD space

An internal SSD is the clearest hardware prerequisite stated by the demo listing. Verify compatibility, capacity, and free space before shopping. Upgrade storage for the requirement and loading behavior; do not buy one on the promise that it will cure every shader or traversal hitch. Search terms such as internal SSD for gaming PC can help you compare models, but check your motherboard interface, drive format, capacity, and warranty yourself. No specific price or merchant is a reliable recommendation for every region.

Do not buy software as a first fix

The documented causes point to in-game settings, hardware limits, storage access, shaders, and overlays. They do not establish a need for a PC-cleaning utility or a particular optimization program. Likewise, a request for cloud streaming is not proof that a named provider supports the game. Test the local bottleneck before spending money on software or a service.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting slower

  • Changing multiple settings at once: you lose the ability to identify which option helped or harmed.
  • Comparing different scenes: a quiet corridor cannot validate a change made for a particle-heavy fight.
  • Reading requirements as benchmarks: minimum and recommended specifications do not state expected FPS.
  • Lowering every option immediately: this can damage image quality without addressing a CPU, storage, shader, or overlay hitch.
  • Forcing unavailable controls: menu inventory can change between builds; use only settings your version exposes.
  • Chasing a headline number: a sustainable cap with even frame times often feels better than a higher but unstable counter.
  • Assuming a second run proves a fix: cached assets can change the result, so repeat tests after updates and note the run conditions.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Confirm Windows 11, DirectX 12 support, 16 GB RAM, the published processor and GPU class, 50 GB of free space, and an SSD.
  2. Record resolution, preset, upscaler, cap, VSync, and the exact scene where the problem appears.
  3. Classify the symptom as persistent low FPS or intermittent hitching.
  4. If the GPU appears limited, test the available upscaler first, then shadows, effects, and post-processing.
  5. Keep TSR enabled if disabling it produces distracting shimmer; treat motion blur as a clarity choice.
  6. Test a sustainable frame cap with the available VSync options and judge frame-time consistency.
  7. For hitches, allow shader preparation, test with overlays disabled, verify SSD installation, and repeat the same route.
  8. Only after these tests consider a hardware upgrade, and match it to the bottleneck you actually observed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix stuttering in Valor Mortis?

First determine whether the problem is consistently low frame rate or brief hitches. For hitches, let initial shader preparation finish, test with overlays and capture tools disabled, verify that the game is on an SSD, and repeat the same route. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every pause has one cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Valor Mortis have DLSS or FSR?

The unofficial Alpha-demo guide reports DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and TSR options, but official sources do not confirm the exact menu inventory for every current build. Use only the upscalers your installed version displays. The guide says its DLSS path requires a supported RTX GPU and current driver.

What settings should I lower first?

If testing indicates a GPU limit, try the available upscaler first, then move shadows from High to Medium and lower effects or post-processing. Change one option at a time and check image quality in motion, especially for shimmer, ghosting, or softness.

Should I use a frame cap below my monitor refresh rate?

It is worth testing. The fan guide suggests a cap slightly below refresh, while Epic explains that caps and VSync can affect tearing and frame pacing. Choose a rate your PC can sustain in demanding scenes; an unattainable cap will still feel uneven.

Will an SSD remove Valor Mortis stutter?

An SSD is required by the published demo specifications and can address storage-related loading pressure, but it will not necessarily remove shader, traversal, CPU, GPU, or overlay hitches. Check compatibility, capacity, and free space before buying one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What FPS should I expect?

No fixed FPS figure is established by the published requirements. The Steam and AMD pages list hardware specifications, not benchmark results, and performance varies with resolution, settings, build, and scene. Judge a sustainable, consistent result on your own system.

The Bottom Line

Start with the published demo requirements, then measure the same scene before and after each change. Use the upscaler, shadows, and effects to address a genuine GPU limit; use caps and VSync to improve frame pacing; and investigate shader, storage, traversal, and overlay hitches separately. Keep image quality and responsiveness in the comparison, and postpone an SSD or GPU purchase until testing shows that hardware—not an incorrect setting—is the limiting factor.
