Hard fights in Valor Mortis become manageable when you treat them as a resource-and-information problem rather than a damage race. Keep enough Endurance to defend, watch an enemy’s wind-up before committing, parry when the timing is readable, and use a block or dodge when it is not. A successful parry can build posture toward a critical attack; the right weapon or Transmutation can then turn that opening into a safe advantage.

Some timing and weapon details below come from secondary combat guides rather than a publisher rulebook. Enemy cues, hitboxes and balance can differ between the demo and the retail build, so use the procedures as a framework and verify each response in your version of the game.

Start with the Endurance loop

Endurance is the resource that limits how many actions you can chain safely. The combat guide describes attacks, blocks and dodges as Endurance expenditures. That means a visually successful attack can still leave you in danger if it empties the reserve needed for the next incoming strike.

Keep a defensive reserve

Do not spend the entire bar on a long attack string. Enter each exchange with enough Endurance to perform at least one defensive response and reposition. If the enemy has not committed to an attack, one measured hit is usually safer than several swings followed by an exhausted recovery.

Use a repeatable exchange

  1. Watch the enemy begin its attack.
  2. Choose parry, block or dodge before your own attack animation starts.
  3. Defend, then take the smallest punish that the recovery window allows.
  4. Return to a neutral position and repeat.

This loop is slower than constant aggression, but it prevents the common failure in which a player wins one exchange and loses the fight while unable to defend during the next one.

Observe one complete attack before trying to interrupt it

When an enemy is unfamiliar, spend the first attempt learning its sequence. Look for the moment the body, weapon or camera movement changes from preparation to release. The developer identified attack readability, hitbox range and enemy staggering as areas it was working on after demo feedback. That makes deliberate observation especially important: a cue that appears obvious in one build may be shortened, repositioned or affected by camera distance in another.

A five-step reading method

  1. Stabilize the camera. Keep the opponent in view and avoid turning sharply while it is winding up.
  2. Identify the wind-up. Note the first repeatable movement that precedes damage, not the moment the weapon is already moving toward you.
  3. Watch the full sequence. Some attacks include a delayed second hit or a recovery bait. Do not assume the first swing is the whole pattern.
  4. Test one response. Try a parry only when the release is visually consistent; otherwise test a block or a dodge while preserving Endurance.
  5. Record the recovery. The safest punish is usually after the enemy has finished its committed motion, not during an uncertain transition.

Specific reports about which individual attacks can be parried, blocked or dodged should be treated as practical cues to verify, not universal rules. Not every move has to support every defense, and a large hitbox can make a seemingly successful dodge fail if you remain inside its range.

Choose parry, block or dodge for the attack in front of you

Response When it fits Main benefit Main risk
Parry The release timing is readable and repeatable Builds posture toward a critical opening A missed timing can leave you in the attack path
Block You need a forgiving answer to a known hit and have Endurance available Provides a direct defensive response without requiring perfect timing Consumes Endurance and may not suit every attack
Dodge The attack demands repositioning or its timing is unsafe to parry Moves you out of the line of attack Consumes Endurance and can fail against wide or delayed hitboxes

The table describes roles, not a promise that every enemy move accepts all three responses. If a cue is unclear, favor the option that leaves you enough Endurance to survive the next beat.

Parry to build posture, then cash out the opening

The secondary combat guide describes successful parries as building posture and eventually creating a critical-attack opportunity. The value of a parry is therefore cumulative: you are not merely avoiding one hit, you are working toward a state in which the enemy can be critically punished.

Practice timing without chasing damage

Stand at a distance where the enemy’s release is visible. On the first few attempts, make the parry your only objective. If you immediately add attacks, camera turns and movement, it becomes difficult to tell whether a miss came from timing, spacing or an interrupted animation. Once the cue is consistent, add one controlled punish and return to neutral.

Convert posture safely

When posture breaks, use the critical opening described by the guide, then reset rather than automatically continuing the combo. The guide’s recommendation to stop after the critical and re-establish spacing is editorial advice, not a publisher-guaranteed rule, but it is a useful default: the opening can end sooner than expected, and extra swings often consume the Endurance needed for the next defense.

Know what the Rapier changes

The developer’s announcement presents the Rapier as a high-risk weapon. Unlike the Sabre, it has no block and relies on perfectly timed parries, but it can strike enemy weak points without a firearm. Choose it when you are comfortable making timing your primary defense and when reliable weak-point access is more valuable than a forgiving block.

Rapier users should not treat a missed parry as a minor mistake. With no block available on that weapon, a mistimed response removes the safer fallback that a Sabre user has. Learn the encounter with a more forgiving setup first if you are still identifying the cues.

Use blocks and dodges as deliberate alternatives

Blocking and dodging both spend Endurance, according to the combat guide, but they are essential when you cannot confidently read a parry window or when a particular attack calls for movement. Their purpose is not to replace observation; it is to give you a controlled answer while you continue learning.

When a block is the better answer

Block when the enemy’s line of attack is clear, the hit is close enough that movement would be risky, and you have enough Endurance to absorb the exchange. Do not hold the defense indefinitely. After the impact, check your resource, identify whether the enemy has a follow-up, and only then counter.

When a dodge is the better answer

Dodge when the attack covers a broad area, when staying in front of the enemy would expose you to a second strike, or when the cue is not stable enough for a parry. Move with a purpose: a short reposition that leaves the enemy’s recovery in view is safer than rolling blindly past it and losing the camera.

Recover before re-engaging

If a block or dodge leaves you nearly empty, do not treat the successful defense as an invitation to attack. Create space, let Endurance return, and make the next exchange from a position where you can defend again.

Separate Endurance from Nephtoglobin

Nephtoglobin and Endurance solve different problems. Endurance governs the stamina-like actions described above. The combat guide says Nephtoglobin builds through melee hits and broken weak points and is spent on Transmutations.

Build Nephtoglobin through purposeful contact

Use safe melee hits and confirmed weak-point breaks to build the resource rather than forcing damage into armor or a bad angle. A short punish after a parry is useful because it advances both the immediate posture plan and, when the hit qualifies, the resource needed for a later Transmutation.

Spend it when it answers the encounter

Do not trigger a Transmutation merely because the meter is available. Spend Nephtoglobin when the effect addresses the enemy’s threat, creates a meaningful opening or helps you cross a dangerous phase. Keep enough Endurance separate from that decision; a powerful Transmutation does not protect you if you cannot evade the next attack.

  • Endurance question: Can I still block or dodge after this action?
  • Nephtoglobin question: Will this Transmutation solve a problem in the current exchange?
  • Position question: After using either resource, can I still see the enemy and its recovery?

Match the weapon to the problem

Weapon selection is a trade-off between defensive forgiveness, timing demand, weak-point access and ranged options. The descriptions of the Sabre, Rapier, Pistol and Musket below come from secondary weapons coverage except for the developer’s explicit Rapier trade-off.

Sabre versus Rapier

Weapon Handling described in the guides Defensive profile When to consider it
Sabre One-handed curved weapon Provides a block option You want a more forgiving answer while learning an enemy’s sequence
Rapier Short, precise thrusting weapon No block; relies on perfectly timed parries You can read releases consistently and value weak-point attacks without firearm ammunition

The Rapier’s weak-point property is especially relevant when ammunition is limited or when staying at firearm distance is unsafe. Its no-block rule is equally relevant: choose it for a timing-focused plan, not because thrusting damage alone guarantees an easier fight.

Pistol versus Musket

Firearm Guide description Trade-off to consider
Pistol Sidearm Leaves your two-handed slot available for another option
Musket More powerful, longer-range, two-handed weapon Competes with other two-handed choices

These range-and-power distinctions are secondary-source descriptions, so confirm handling, ammunition behavior and damage in your build. Pick the Pistol when flexibility in the other hand matters more than reach; pick the Musket when a longer-range, higher-power shot justifies giving up another two-handed tool.

A step-by-step plan for a boss attempt

Before entering

  1. Choose the weapon whose defensive requirements you can execute reliably. Do not bring the Rapier into a blind attempt if you cannot yet identify the parry release.
  2. Enter with Endurance available. Avoid spending the reserve on incidental enemies immediately before the arena.
  3. Decide what your first objective is: learn the cue, build posture, break a weak point or create a Transmutation opportunity.
  4. Set the camera so the arena edges and the boss remain understandable. First-person depth errors are more dangerous when your view is already crowded.

During the first cycle

  1. Watch one attack sequence without trying to maximize damage.
  2. Answer the next clear release with the defense you selected.
  3. Take one or two safe hits during recovery, then disengage.
  4. Check Endurance before attempting another attack or Transmutation.

After a posture break

Take the critical opportunity described by the combat guide. Once it ends, reset your spacing and camera. Do not assume the boss is harmless simply because posture was broken; the next attack may begin immediately after the opening.

When the boss changes behavior

Re-observe rather than repeating the old response automatically. A new phase, arena position or camera angle can alter the apparent timing. If the cue is no longer clear, use a block or dodge while you learn the changed sequence and preserve enough Endurance for a second response.

Why can I not beat the first boss in Valor Mortis?

For players asking this after the demo, General Lothaire’s placement needs context. The developer said the demo chapters were bespoke recreations rather than the retail chapters. It also said Lothaire was intended to be the full-game Chapter II boss, while demo players encountered him at the end of the demo’s Chapter I after about 30 minutes.

That means the demo’s “first boss” was not necessarily the first retail progression check. Its early placement could confront players with a boss before the broader campaign’s intended learning curve. Use the fight to practice resource management and cue recognition, but do not assume that demo order, difficulty pacing or chapter context exactly predicts the retail game.

Manage first-person camera and depth problems

The developer has explicitly acknowledged the challenge: “Environmental awareness, field of view, sense of depth perception. These are all challenges for Soulslike gameplay in the first-person perspective.” The statement identifies the problem, not an optimal field-of-view value or control setting.

Practical camera habits

  • Keep the boss near the center of view before its wind-up begins.
  • Avoid backing into walls or arena edges where a dodge has nowhere to go.
  • After a dodge, turn enough to reacquire the enemy before attacking.
  • Use the enemy’s body movement, not only the weapon tip, to judge distance.
  • If a cue appears inconsistent, repeat it from the same spacing; changing distance can change the apparent timing.

These habits reduce uncertainty without claiming that one FOV or sensitivity setting is best for everyone.

Fix the most common failure patterns

“I run out of Endurance after attacking.”

Shorten the punish and stop before the bar is empty. Enter the next exchange with a defensive reserve, then recover outside the enemy’s immediate range.

“My parries work once and fail the next time.”

Check whether you are parrying different attacks in the same sequence. Identify the release for each move separately; a fast follow-up or delayed hit may require a block or dodge instead.

“I break posture but still die.”

Take the critical opening, then reset. Chasing extra swings can leave you in the next attack while Endurance is depleted.

“The Rapier feels impossible.”

That difficulty is part of its stated design trade-off: no block and a reliance on perfectly timed parries. Learn the encounter with a Sabre or another forgiving option, then return to the Rapier when the release cues are reliable.

“Dodging seems to fail even though I moved.”

Review spacing and hitbox coverage. A dodge can move you but still leave you inside a wide or delayed attack. Try moving earlier, changing direction, or using a block if the attack’s shape makes displacement unreliable.

“The demo boss feels unfair compared with the rest of the game.”

Do not use the demo’s chapter order as proof of the retail curve. The developer described the chapters as bespoke and placed Lothaire later in the intended full-game structure.

What demo feedback can and cannot tell you about difficulty

The developer said it was working on attack readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, boss variety, difficulty progression, CPU performance and the balance between platforming and combat after demo feedback. Those comments show which areas were targeted for improvement; they do not prove exactly how each change shipped or how current retail encounters behave.

Because the available statements were made before the announced launch and do not include hands-on retail results, verify timing, hitboxes, stagger behavior and performance in the build you are playing. The most durable strategy remains the same: protect Endurance, observe first, parry when the cue is clear, choose block or dodge when it is not, convert posture and Nephtoglobin deliberately, and reset after every successful punish.
