For clearer parry cues in Valor Mortis, turn Motion Blur off, set Camera Shake to Low, and keep Enemy Volume high enough that attack sounds remain distinct. Rebind block and dodge if the default keyboard positions make defensive inputs uncomfortable.
For steadier aiming, lower Mouse Aiming Sensitivity or Controller Aiming Sensitivity below your normal look speed, raise Combat Assist when melee swings miss because of alignment, and leave the Crosshair on if it helps you track glowing weak points. Turn Instant Restart on while learning a boss.

How Valor Mortis parries actually work
Settings can make a cue easier to see or hear, but they do not remove the timing requirement. The game’s posture system is affected by hits and parries, and attacks cannot be cancelled into a parry. In practical terms, do not begin a swing unless you have enough time to finish it. If an enemy is already winding up, block or dodge instead of hoping to interrupt your own animation.

A block followed immediately by a counterattack has an important recovery benefit: the counter restores the health you lost while blocking. That makes a conservative block-counter sequence useful when a parry is unclear, especially while learning a new enemy. It is not a replacement for learning the parry timing; it is a way to survive a missed read and regain the blocking damage.
Firearms serve a different precision task. Xbox Wire’s launch guidance identifies glowing weak points called lambent blisters and advises aiming down sights at them. Ammunition is limited enough that deliberate weak-point shots are preferable to spraying, which is why the separate aiming controls and crosshair matter.
Step-by-step: make enemy attacks easier to read
1. Turn Motion Blur off
Open the game’s Settings menu and locate the display or camera options containing Motion Blur. Set it to Off. The documented reason is clarity: disabling blur produces a crisper view of an enemy’s wind-up and the transition into the strike. If you still lose the animation, leave blur off while adjusting other visual effects rather than turning it back on to solve a different problem.
2. Set Camera Shake to Low
In the same settings area, choose Low for Camera Shake. High impact movement can hide the next attack immediately after a hit, which is exactly when you need to decide whether to block, parry or dodge. Low is the clearest comfort setting documented for this menu; it reduces distraction without claiming to alter combat timing.

3. Protect the enemy-audio channel
Keep Enemy Volume high enough for attack sounds to stand out. If the mix is too loud overall, reduce music or ambience first. The settings reference identifies enemy effects as the channel most directly connected to attack telegraphs, and One More Level has discussed stronger pre-attack audio cues as part of its combat-readability work. Audio should supplement the animation, not replace it: some attacks are easier to recognize visually, and environmental noise or your own impacts can still mask a cue.
4. Rebind defense around your movement hand
Use the full keyboard and mouse rebinding support to put block/parry and dodge where you can press them without releasing movement or reaching awkwardly. One More Level reported that players found the default Ctrl block and Alt dodge arrangement uncomfortable, and it discussed revised defaults, saved custom bindings and side-mouse-button options.
Choose a layout you can repeat under pressure. A useful test is to hold your movement direction, rotate the camera, and press block several times without stretching or lifting your primary fingers. If you cannot do that comfortably, the binding is a liability even if it looks efficient on paper.
5. Try a controller when keyboard reach remains awkward
Valor Mortis supports several controller schemes. A controller does not change parry frames or make the combat mechanically easier, but placing movement, camera and defense on the same handheld layout can remove the reach problem that prompted the rebind. TechRadar’s PC review used an Xbox Wireless Controller, making that an established accessory option for this type of setup; check current regional availability before purchasing.

Step-by-step: make aiming steadier
Separate look speed from aiming speed
The settings reference lists four distinct sensitivity controls: Mouse Sensitivity, Mouse Aiming Sensitivity, Controller Sensitivity and Controller Aiming Sensitivity. Lower only the aiming value first. This lets you turn quickly while exploring or tracking a melee target, then move more slowly when aiming down sights at a weak point.
If the reticle feels sluggish outside aim-down-sights, you lowered the wrong control. Restore normal look sensitivity and reduce the aiming modifier instead. Make small changes and test the same target at the same distance; changing both values at once makes it difficult to know which adjustment helped.
Use Combat Assist for alignment problems
Combat Assist controls how strongly the camera snaps toward an enemy during a basic attack. Raise it when your swing misses because the target is just outside your facing direction, not when you are pressing the attack too early. Assistance can correct camera alignment, but it cannot bypass the rule that an attack animation cannot be cancelled into a parry.
When testing, stand at a consistent distance and make a single basic attack at a stationary enemy. If the camera still fails to face the target, increase assistance again. If the camera pulls toward an unintended enemy in a crowd, reduce it and rely more on manual camera control or a selective target lock.

Keep the Crosshair on when it shortens weak-point searches
Set Crosshair to On if a persistent reticle helps you find lambent blisters quickly. The launch guidance emphasizes aiming firearms at these glowing weak points, and ammunition is not unlimited. Players who find the reticle visually distracting can turn it off, but do so only after confirming that they can reacquire weak points reliably during movement.
Use target lock selectively
Target lock can reduce the amount of manual camera work needed for a single opponent, but multi-enemy encounters are more complicated. One More Level identified target-lock range, target prioritization and camera tracking as areas for improvement. Those were announced changes rather than a published universal behavior specification, so check how your current build selects targets. Unlock when the camera keeps choosing a peripheral enemy or hides a more dangerous attack, and relock when a single opponent is moving quickly around you.

Instant Restart
Turn Instant Restart on while practicing bosses. The menu describes it as restarting from the last checkpoint without the normal death-screen sequence. It does not alter the encounter or give extra health; it simply removes runback friction so each attempt starts sooner.

Additional comfort controls
The released game includes subtitle-size choices, field-of-view adjustment and gore toggles, according to TechRadar’s accessibility coverage. These do not change parry timing, but larger subtitles can improve non-combat readability and a suitable field of view can make nearby threats easier to keep in peripheral vision. Change them for comfort rather than expecting a direct mechanical advantage.
Keyboard and mouse versus controller
| Consideration | Keyboard and mouse | Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive input comfort | Can be excellent after rebinding; the documented default Ctrl block and Alt dodge positions were uncomfortable for some players. | Several schemes are supported and keep movement, camera and defense on one device. |
| Camera control | Fast, precise turns, with independent mouse look and aiming sensitivity. | Uses stick sensitivity and response-curve options; slower input can feel steadier while aiming. |
| Parry timing | Not inherently faster; comfort depends on reachable bindings. | Does not change the combat rules or parry window. |
| Customization | Full keyboard and mouse rebinding is available in the released game. | Multiple controller layouts are available; choose the one that places defense naturally. |
| Best reason to choose it | You prefer precise camera movement and can reach defense without releasing movement. | Your keyboard layout causes missed inputs or hand strain. |
Fixes for common problems
“I see the attack but still parry too late.”
- Confirm Motion Blur is Off and Camera Shake is Low.
- Raise Enemy Volume while lowering music or ambience.
- Watch the final attack commitment rather than the earliest idle movement; do not press attack first and attempt to cancel into parry.
- Use block-counter until the enemy’s rhythm is familiar, then begin testing deliberate parries.
“My block or dodge does not come out.”
- Rebind both actions to keys or mouse buttons reachable while holding movement.
- Test the binding outside a boss attempt so you can check simultaneous movement, camera and defense inputs.
- If the keyboard still feels cramped, try one of the supported controller schemes.
“My firearm aim overshoots the weak point.”
- Lower Mouse Aiming Sensitivity or Controller Aiming Sensitivity, not necessarily normal look sensitivity.
- Keep the Crosshair on while learning the weak-point position.
- Use the same target and distance for each adjustment, changing only one value at a time.
“My melee attacks miss beside the enemy.”
- Increase Combat Assist gradually to strengthen basic-attack camera alignment.
- Check target lock when fighting one enemy, but disable or retarget it if a crowd causes unwanted camera pulls.
- Remember that assistance helps facing; it does not interrupt an attack animation or guarantee a hit through another enemy.
What may change between builds
One More Level announced stronger attack wind-ups, stronger pre-attack audio cues, clearer visual and audio separation between block and parry, revised default controls, saved custom bindings, smoother tracking, smarter target prioritization and longer target-lock range. These are planned improvements, not published frame-by-frame parry values. Your build may therefore feel different from the demo settings reference or from an earlier review.
For that reason, keep the three most reliable readability changes—Motion Blur Off, Camera Shake Low and a clear Enemy Volume channel—as your baseline, then retest bindings and target lock after updates. No setting removes the need to learn each enemy’s attack pattern.
