For a first Valor Mortis playthrough, begin with the Saber and spend your first five upgrades on Maximum Health ×2, Melee Damage ×2, and Maximum Stamina ×1. Health gives you room to learn first-person parries and dodges, melee damage shortens routine fights, and stamina supports attacks, evasion, and later firearm use.
The safest opening build
The beginner setup commonly called “First Blood” uses five early upgrades:

| Order | Stat | Allocations | Why it comes early |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Maximum Health | ×2 | Provides the largest margin for learning enemy timing and recovering from an occasional hit. |
| 2 | Melee Damage | ×2 | Improves the damage of the Saber, your main tool for ordinary encounters. |
| 3 | Maximum Stamina (also called Maximum Endurance) | ×1 | Expands the resource available for attacks, dodges and defensive movement. |
This is a low-commitment melee opening rather than a permanent class choice. You can move toward firearms, heavy weapons or Transmutations after these fundamentals are established. The recommendations come from an unofficial, periodically updated build database and guide material, so exact values and node names can change with patches.
How Valor Mortis stats are organized
Progression is divided into three pillars. Understanding the pillar is more useful than memorizing an isolated node because it shows which later upgrades support your chosen weapon.

Might: survival and close-range damage
Might contains Maximum Health and Melee Damage. One Maximum Health upgrade adds 10 maximum Health according to the current database values. Melee Damage affects your sword attacks, including the balanced Saber route and the slower Claymore route.
Endurance: stamina and firearms
Endurance contains maximum Endurance, regeneration and firearm damage. One Maximum Stamina upgrade adds 6 maximum Endurance in the listed values. The resource is important even for a sword user: attacking, dodging and other movement decisions compete for the same pool. It becomes more valuable if you aim with a firearm, because the firearm branch also belongs to Endurance.
Sufferance: Transmutations and tolerance
Sufferance governs Transmutation damage and Nephtoglobin tolerance. Nephtoglobin is the resource-management concern behind Fire and Stasis builds. Investing here makes sense when you are deliberately using Transmutations rather than merely carrying one as an occasional option.

What the specialist nodes change
- Blocking: each listed upgrade reduces blocking Endurance cost and damage taken by 6%.
- Parrying Impact: adds 6% Posture damage on a successful parry.
- Nephtoglobin Extraction: increases extraction by 30% per melee hit.
These figures are database values, not guarantees that every future version will use the same numbers. Treat them as a planning guide and check the node description at the Lantern before committing a large stockpile of Catalysts.
How to handle Catalysts without losing progress
Catalysts are the progression currency earned through combat and pickups. They are spent at Lanterns. The risk is not merely that a boss kills you: unspent Catalysts drop at the location of death, and a second death before you recover them removes them permanently.

- Collect and clear the area first. Pickups and defeated enemies build your balance, but do not assume that reaching a boss door makes the currency safe.
- Return to a Lantern. Spend the Catalysts on the next planned node instead of carrying them into an uncertain encounter.
- Bank before a boss attempt. If you want to test a boss immediately, spend enough to remove the amount you would regret losing.
- Recover a dropped cache deliberately. If you die, make reaching the marked location the objective of the next attempt; avoid detours that create another death risk.
- Stop chasing a lost cache after the second death. The original unspent balance is then gone, so rebuild from new encounters rather than distorting your build around a vanished amount.
This system favors regular, small purchases over saving for a distant “perfect” node. A health or damage upgrade that helps you survive the next route is usually more useful than a theoretical specialist upgrade you cannot safely reach.
Weapon paths compared
Choose a weapon by the kind of decision you want to make repeatedly, not by a claim that one route has the highest damage in every situation. The available guide recommendations compare range, resource economy, timing demand, damage window and forgiveness as follows.
| Path | Range | Resource economy | Timing demand | Damage window | Forgiveness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saber | Close | Simple melee resource use | Balanced parry and dodge timing | Frequent, moderate openings | Highest among the starter choices |
| Claymore | Close | Committed melee swings | Requires earlier commitment and spacing | Fewer, heavier attacks | Lower when mistakes are frequent |
| Musket | Ranged | Ammunition and stamina management | Precision and shot timing | Targeted headshot or critical windows | Depends on accuracy and ammo control |
| Fire or Stasis Transmutation | Ranged or control distance | Nephtoglobin management | Status timing and resource awareness | Setup followed by status or control payoff | Lower until the resource loop is familiar |
The table describes guide-based build intent, not independently tested performance rankings. The Saber is recommended because it lets a new player learn the combat system without forcing an early commitment to ammunition or Nephtoglobin management.
Saber: the default first-playthrough route
Why it works for beginners
The Saber is described as balanced and low commitment. Its role is not to remove the need for parries; it gives you enough health and ordinary melee damage to practice them without every mistake ending an attempt. Close-range play also keeps the core feedback loop visible: read the attack, choose a block, parry or dodge, then punish the opening.
Recommended early sequence
- Take the two Maximum Health upgrades in the First Blood setup.
- Take two Melee Damage upgrades so standard enemies do not require unnecessarily long exchanges.
- Take one Maximum Stamina upgrade to make the attack-and-dodge loop less restrictive.
- Once those five nodes are complete, choose between more melee damage, Critical Damage and Parrying Impact based on how you actually fight.
When to add parry investments
Parrying Impact is valuable after you can land parries consistently. Its listed effect is 6% additional Posture damage on a successful parry, so it rewards a reliable skill rather than repairing an unreliable one. If you are still missing most parry attempts, spend the next point on a generally useful survival or damage node instead.

Claymore: a deliberate aggression build
The Claymore route is slower and more aggression-focused. Its guide pairing emphasizes Melee Damage and Rampage upgrades. The weapon suits players who prefer committing to a large punish after reading an enemy, but a missed swing can leave you exposed for longer than a Saber attack.
Who should choose it early
- Choose Claymore if you already recognize attack ranges and can wait for a clear damage window.
- Keep the two early health investments if you are learning the game; heavy weapons do not remove the value of a mistake buffer.
- Use spacing to make each committed swing intentional rather than trying to trade hits repeatedly.
A Claymore player who is frequently interrupted should delay additional aggression upgrades and improve survivability first. The cited route is a preference for impact, not evidence that the Claymore is universally stronger.
Musket: precision, stamina and ammunition
The Musket is the ranged precision route. Its marksman build prioritizes Headshot Damage, Critical Damage, Maximum Stamina and ammunition sustain. This path changes the main question from “Can I stay in melee range?” to “Can I create and exploit a safe firing window without wasting ammunition?”
Stat order after the safe opening
- Raise Maximum Stamina so dodging and aiming do not compete as harshly for your resource.
- Add Headshot Damage when your accuracy is good enough to make head-level targeting repeatable.
- Add Critical Damage to improve the payoff from confirmed critical opportunities.
- Invest in ammunition sustain when missed shots or long routes are consuming your reserve.
Maximum Stamina has a double role here: it supports the firearm side of Endurance and gives you more room for evasive movement. Do not treat a gun build as a way to ignore positioning; an empty magazine or a missed precision shot still leaves you exposed.
Fire and Stasis Transmutations
Fire and Stasis are control-oriented routes that prioritize Sufferance, Transmutation Damage and Status Buildup. They can be effective for a player who enjoys creating a condition or controlling an enemy before delivering the main punishment, but they introduce Nephtoglobin management from the start.

Recommended commitment order
- Build a basic survival foundation before specializing, especially if this is your first run.
- Raise Nephtoglobin Sufferance so the resource is less restrictive.
- Increase Transmutation Damage to improve the direct payoff of the chosen effect.
- Add Status Buildup when your plan depends on reaching a threshold rather than dealing only immediate damage.
Nephtoglobin Extraction is a specialist option with a listed increase of 30% per melee hit. It can fit a hybrid that uses melee attacks to sustain a Transmutation loop, but it is not a substitute for understanding when to spend the resource. If you are not using Transmutations regularly, Sufferance upgrades are an inefficient early commitment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to branch after the First Blood setup
Remain primarily melee
Add Critical Damage and then Parrying Impact once your health, melee damage and stamina foundation is working. Critical Damage rewards confirmed openings; Parrying Impact rewards successful parries. The correct order between them depends on whether your current fights are decided by missed punish opportunities or by failed parry timing.
Move toward firearms
Raise Maximum Stamina first, then Headshot Damage and Critical Damage. Keep an ammunition-sustain option in the plan rather than spending every point on damage. A firearm route that cannot maintain shots may deal impressive damage on paper but provide little value during a long level.
Commit to Transmutations
Raise Nephtoglobin Sufferance and Transmutation Damage, then Status Buildup. This sequence keeps the resource usable before increasing the payoff for building a condition. Add melee-support nodes only if melee hits are part of your actual rotation.

Symptom: you reach a difficult section with a large unspent balance. Fix: spend at the next Lantern, especially before a boss. The death-drop rule makes unbanked currency a liability.

Buying parry bonuses before learning parries
Symptom: the Parrying Impact description looks attractive, but most attempts fail. Fix: use health, melee damage or stamina while practicing the timing; return to the posture bonus after successful parries are routine.
Mixing every resource system at once
Symptom: you carry a sword, firearm and Transmutation but cannot keep ammunition, stamina and Nephtoglobin available. Fix: choose one primary damage loop and let other tools remain situational until its resource economy is stable.
Choosing Claymore for damage alone
Symptom: long recovery windows lead to repeated trades. Fix: either improve spacing and attack discipline or return to the Saber while learning enemy patterns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming database numbers are permanent
Symptom: a node does not match an older guide. Fix: trust the current in-game description first. The community database values are periodically updated and can become version-sensitive after balance patches.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you want the most forgiving learning route? Pick Saber.
- Do you prefer slow, committed punish attacks and already understand spacing? Consider Claymore.
- Can you consistently aim for precision shots and manage ammunition? Consider Musket.
- Do you enjoy status effects and can track Nephtoglobin deliberately? Consider Fire or Stasis.
- Are you dying while carrying Catalysts? Visit a Lantern before another risky encounter.
- Are you missing parries? Delay Parrying Impact until the skill, not the stat, is the limiting factor.
What is established about the game’s starting context
The official Steam announcement presents Valor Mortis as a first-person Soulslike with dual-wielding and progression for swords, firearms and magic. That design explains why the beginner build is intentionally flexible: the first health, melee and stamina choices help you learn the shared combat fundamentals before you commit to one of the specialist resource systems.
