Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike action game set in a grotesque alternate-history version of Napoleonic Europe. Its announced mix of stamina-based combat, parries, firearms, supernatural abilities and connected exploration should appeal to players who want a different view on familiar Soulslike ideas. But the clearest independent hands-on account available before launch warned that difficulty could be uneven, especially in chapter-ending boss fights. “Strangely chill” is best read as a possible contrast between deliberate exploration and intense encounters—not as a reported player consensus.
What is Valor Mortis?
Developed by One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, Valor Mortis puts players in the role of William Dowsett, a resurrected soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. Napoleon’s disembodied voice guides William as he confronts supernatural horrors and a conspiracy threatening humanity. The setting reimagines 19th-century Europe as an alternate-history plague nightmare. The premise and first-person Soulslike framing are described in the Unreal Engine developer interview and the publisher’s launch announcement.

First person is presented as a core part of the design. The available official descriptions do not establish a third-person mode or a perspective toggle, so players who specifically want a third-person Soulslike should not assume one is available.

How does its first-person Soulslike combat work?
The publisher describes a system built around melee attacks, ranged firearms, stamina management, parries, counterattacks and supernatural abilities. Exploration is described as interconnected and Metroidvania-style. That combination is the game’s announced design, rather than a set of mechanics independently verified in the final release.

Weapons and combat choices
In its gameplay overview, the publisher identifies the Claymore as a slow, high-impact two-handed blade and the Musket as a more powerful, longer-range two-handed firearm than William’s pistol. It says that choosing the right weapon for an enemy matters. The descriptions suggest a deliberate mix of close and ranged engagements, but they do not establish how weapon balance feels across the full game.
Why the first-person view may appeal—or put you off
First-person perspective can make the setting and encounters feel immediate, while also changing how players read distance and incoming attacks compared with a conventional over-the-shoulder Soulslike. The developer’s demo-feedback update says players particularly enjoyed the first-person combat and landing a perfect parry. That is qualitative feedback from the developer, not a published survey count or independent assessment.

How hard is Valor Mortis?
The most useful independent evidence is Wesley LeBlanc’s September 21, 2026 Game Informer hands-on preview. LeBlanc said he enjoyed much of what he played, but described the difficulty balance as “incredibly uneven,” with chapter-ending boss fights spoiling encounters that should have been climactic. He characterized the experience as often frustrating despite seeing promise in its Soulslike combat. This was a pre-release preview, not a review of the final build, so it supports caution rather than a settled verdict on launch difficulty.

The team said it was working on combat readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, boss variety and the difficulty curve, alongside performance optimization and the balance of platforming against combat. It also cautioned that its demo’s Chapter I and Chapter VII versions were bespoke event builds and no longer representative of full-game polish. A boss encountered roughly 30 minutes into the demo was intended to appear at the end of Chapter II in the full game. Those qualifications make it especially important not to treat either the demo or the stated work in progress as proof of the final game’s balance.

Is it really “strangely chill”?
There is no established post-launch player consensus in the evidence available before release, and the phrase should not be mistaken for a measured description of the whole game. A more grounded interpretation is that Valor Mortis may pair exploratory stretches through a connected world with sharply demanding combat. The publisher describes interconnected exploration, while the preview reports frustration with some boss difficulty. Whether the quieter intervals make the hard fights feel more striking—or whether those fights overwhelm the pace—depends on the finished game and the individual player.

What the PlayStation listing confirms
The official PlayStation listing specifies PS5, one player, offline play, DualSense vibration and trigger-effect support, and a 5:00 p.m. UTC release time on October 13. It showed no player ratings when checked on October 12, 2026. The listing does not establish cross-save, performance modes, frame rates, PC system requirements or parity between platforms.
