Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026, with the Deep North, a Unity 6 engine upgrade and hundreds of new or changed assets. That combination created a hard compatibility boundary: some mods have been updated and work again, while others fail during startup or load but no longer do anything. Iron Gate provides no official mod-support guarantee, so compatibility depends on each mod author and on the exact game patch you are running.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For a current PC installation, use BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer, a maintained manager such as Gale Mod Manager or r2modman, and only mods whose package notes explicitly target the 1.0/Deep North generation. Keep a clean backup of both your saves and your mod profile before testing anything.

This was not a routine content patch. Iron Gate’s 1.0 launch notes list more than 40 new weapons, more than 10 new creatures, more than 80 new buildable pieces, more than 30 new crafting materials and more than 20 new food items. The same release moved the game to Unity 6. Mods that only add configuration data may survive that kind of change, but plugins that call private methods, inspect fields or search for asset names are much more exposed.
Iron Gate’s official FAQ says mod updates take time and that, because the game has no official mod support, it cannot guarantee that mods will function when 1.0 releases. That means “it worked before the update” is not evidence that a package is safe now. The relevant question is whether its current release was rebuilt and tested for your 1.0.x version.
The concrete API changes behind startup errors
The 1.0 compatibility documentation identifies several renamed or replaced members. Container.RPC_OpenRespons, Container.RPC_TakeAllRespons and Minimap.OnMapRightClick no longer match the names expected by older plugins. A Harmony patch that looks for one of those names can fail during PatchAll(), stopping the plugin loader.
New overloads create a second failure mode: a patch that previously selected a method by name can become ambiguous when two methods share that name. Changes to field layouts and interface shapes are more serious still; there may be no safe runtime translation. In those cases, a compatibility shim can keep a DLL loading while leaving the feature itself inactive.
The post-1.0 baseline: components you need
| Component | What it does | 1.0 guidance |
|---|---|---|
| BepInExPack Valheim | Loads and manages plugin DLLs. | Install 5.4.2350 or newer. Unity 6-based 1.0 tooling expects this baseline. |
| Mod manager | Creates profiles, installs dependencies and enables or disables packages. | Gale Mod Manager and r2modman are current practical choices. Gale can use packages from both Thunderstore and Hexium. |
| Jotunn | A library used by many content and item mods. | Common but optional. Install the version requested by the individual mod. |
| Individual mod releases | The feature you actually want to run. | Choose packages whose release notes name Valheim 1.0, Deep North or a later 1.0.x patch. |
Do not assume that installing a manager updates BepInEx or every plugin. Managers organize files; they do not make an old binary compatible with a changed game API.

Clean installation procedure for Valheim 1.0
- Back up first. Copy your local character and world saves to a separate folder, and export or record the manager profile, including enabled mods and versions. Keep this backup outside the Valheim installation directory so a reinstall cannot remove it.
- Start with the unmodded game. Launch Valheim once through Steam with all mods disabled. Reach the main menu, quit normally and apply any pending game update. This confirms that the base 1.0.x installation is healthy before you add a loader.
- Install the current loader. Install BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer into the Valheim game directory, at the same level as the game executable. Start the game once, then close it. A successful first run creates the
BepInExdirectory and its log files. - Create a fresh profile. In Gale or r2modman, make a profile specifically for Valheim 1.0. Add only the loader and the libraries required by the first mod you intend to test. Avoid copying an entire pre-1.0 plugins folder into the new profile.
- Add one mod at a time. Install a package, launch to the main menu, and check
BepInEx/LogOutput.log. If the game reaches the menu and the feature appears in a test world, add the next package. This isolates conflicts that would otherwise produce an unreadable stack of errors. - Record multiplayer requirements. Mark each package as client-only, server-only or required on both sides. A convenience or interface mod may be client-side, while a mod that adds items, creatures, world generation or recipes normally requires matching files for every connected player and the server.
Mods reported working after launch
A September 28, 2026 roundup reported that many popular packages had recovered after 1.0. The names below are useful starting points, not permanent guarantees. Open each package’s current release notes, dependency list and supported-game field before enabling it.
| Mod | Reported function | What to verify before use |
|---|---|---|
| ValheimPlus (Fork) | A maintained fork of the familiar configuration and quality-of-life project. | Confirm the fork’s specific 1.0 release and whether its options require matching server configuration. |
| More World Locations AIO | Adds additional world locations. | World-generation impact, server installation requirement and whether an existing world has already generated the relevant areas. |
| Seasons | Adds dynamic weather and seasonal obstacles across biomes. | Version compatibility, multiplayer synchronization and effects on an established world. |
| TheGreatestPortal | Changes portal-related behavior. | Client/server requirements and compatibility with other travel or portal plugins. |
| PlantEverything | Expands planting and cultivation options. | Recipe, growth and network behavior, especially on a shared server. |
| PlanBuild | Lets you save, relocate and build blueprints later. | The maintained post-1.0 build and any library dependency it lists. |
| Quick Stack Store Restock | Adds quick-stack, restock, store-all and sort commands. | Input conflicts and whether every player needs the same package. |
| Workbenches+ | Adds category, sort and filter controls to crafting benches. | UI compatibility with the current game build and other crafting-interface mods. |
“Working” in a roundup means the package functioned for that report’s test period; it does not promise compatibility with every hotfix. A mod can load successfully and still have a broken recipe, missing asset or desynchronized multiplayer behavior.
Choosing Gale, r2modman or manual files
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Gale Mod Manager | Players who want profile management and access to both Thunderstore and Hexium downloads. | Package availability and metadata still depend on the individual source and maintainer. |
| r2modman | Players who prefer a focused profile manager with established Valheim workflows. | You must still read each package’s 1.0 notes and handle server-side files correctly. |
| Manual installation | Experienced users testing a single DLL or developing a private profile. | Easy to overwrite files, miss dependencies or lose track of versions during hotfixes. |
A manager is especially valuable after 1.0 because you can duplicate a known-good profile, disable one suspect package and roll back without deleting your entire installation. Manual copying is viable, but keep a written inventory of every DLL and its version.

Using Valheim10Compatibility as a temporary bridge
Valheim10Compatibility is a BepInEx preloader patcher for Valheim 1.0.x. It was built against 1.0.7 and documented as verified through the 1.0.12 hotfix. Its purpose is narrow: rewrite selected assemblies in memory so some plugins compiled for 0.221.12 and earlier can load without an immediate recompilation.
Correct file placement
- Install BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer first.
- Put the compatibility package’s preloader DLL in
BepInEx/patchers/. - Put its runtime adapter in
BepInEx/plugins/. - Launch the game and inspect
BepInEx/LogOutput.logfor the patcher and the target plugin.
Do not treat a clean load as proof that the old feature works. A bridge may restore a method name solely to let a plugin initialize, while vanilla now calls a replacement method directly. The result can be a silent no-op: no crash, but no feature.
When to remove the bridge
The bridge author recommends a source fix in the mod itself whenever possible. A native 1.0 update is safer because it uses the current method names, overload signatures, fields and interfaces, and it is less dependent on preloader order. Once a mod publishes a native 1.0 build, disable the bridge for that mod, launch, test the feature and remove the bridge if nothing else needs it. Running both indefinitely increases the chance of duplicate patches and future conflicts.

Troubleshooting common post-update failures
The game crashes or closes before the menu
- Disable every plugin and confirm that unmodded Valheim reaches the menu.
- Re-enable only BepInEx, then add libraries and mods one by one.
- Search
LogOutput.logforPatchAll, missing-method, missing-field or ambiguous-match errors; these usually identify an outdated patch target. - Remove a compatibility bridge if the target mod now has a native 1.0 release.
The game loads, but a mod does nothing
Check that the DLL is in the active profile, that every dependency is enabled and that the package targets your exact 1.0.x generation. A renamed method can leave a plugin apparently healthy while its event hook is never called. Test in a new local world before deciding that the feature is safe in a long-running server.

Compare the server and client profile manifests. World-generation, creatures, items, recipes and building pieces generally require synchronized versions; a purely visual or interface package may not. Remove the newest package from both sides, confirm a clean connection, then add it back with the author’s stated server instructions.
An update broke a previously working profile
Stop launching the affected world with the changed profile, copy the current saves again and duplicate the last known-good profile. Check every enabled package’s release notes against the new game version. Patch 1.0.20 demonstrates why this matters: even a hotfix can change assemblies and runtime behavior, not just fix a visible bug.

Saves, worlds and achievements
Iron Gate says existing saves remain where they were, and unexplored areas should generate new biome content correctly. It recommends a fresh world for the best 1.0 experience. A modded world can therefore remain usable, but the risk depends on what the mod changed: interface tweaks are less invasive than world-generation, item or creature systems.
Keep at least two backups: an untouched pre-mod copy and a rolling copy made before each profile change. Never test a newly updated world with your only character file. If a mod adds or removes world objects, do not assume uninstalling it will cleanly reverse those changes.
Cheats can lock characters and worlds out of achievements. The October 15, 2026 Patch 1.0.20 notes say the game reset cheated flags on items and build pieces that had been incorrectly marked by a bug in the initial 1.0 release. That correction does not make every modded or cheat-enabled session achievement-safe; treat achievement progress as a separate, unmodded profile.
Patch 1.0.20 also changed trophy-drop chance by monster star level and pseudo-random drop persistence. Those changes are a reminder that gameplay behavior can shift in a hotfix even when your mod files have not changed.
A maintenance checklist for every 1.0.x patch
- Read the game patch notes and note the exact build number.
- Back up characters, worlds and the complete manager profile.
- Launch once with all mods disabled to verify vanilla behavior.
- Check BepInEx, Jotunn and every plugin for a release targeting the new build.
- Remove or disable compatibility bridges that are no longer required.
- Test the profile in a disposable world before opening a primary server.
- Confirm that all multiplayer participants use the required synchronized versions.
- Keep the previous working profile until the new one has survived a normal play session.
How to decide whether a mod is safe to keep
Use these checks in order:
- Explicit target: Does the package name Valheim 1.0, Deep North or your current 1.0.x build?
- Recency: Is there a release after the game update, and does its changelog mention fixes rather than only a repackaged old DLL?
- Dependencies: Are the required BepInEx and Jotunn versions present and enabled?
- Patch surface: Does it patch renamed methods, overloaded methods or private fields? Such mods deserve extra testing.
- World impact: Does it alter generation, saves, items or creatures, or is it a reversible interface change?
- Network model: Does the author require the mod on the server, every client or only the player using it?
- Bridge status: If a compatibility shim is involved, does the author tell you when to remove it?
The safest post-1.0 profile is small, versioned and reversible. Add a feature only after its package notes, dependencies and multiplayer requirements are clear, and keep a separate unmodded profile for achievement-focused play.

The bottom line
Valheim 1.0 broke mods because Unity 6, new content and internal API changes invalidated assumptions that older plugins made about methods, fields and assets. Many popular mods have returned, but compatibility is package-specific and can change with every 1.0.x patch. Start from BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer, use Gale or r2modman to isolate profiles, prefer native 1.0 releases over bridges, and protect your saves before every experiment.
