Frostcore is a Deep North progression resource in Valheim 1.0, not a reward from the Mountain Frost Caves. A current PC Gamer guide reports that picking up your first Frostcore unlocks recipes for the Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln. The exact costs below come from that guide, rather than Iron Gate’s launch announcement, so check the recipe in your current game before committing resources.
Where to find Frostcore
Frostcore belongs to the Deep North route. Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 announcement confirms that the Deep North is part of the released game, but it does not specify Frostcore spawn locations, a route through the biome, or a tunnel map. The available evidence therefore does not establish a precise gathering path or guarantee that a particular winding tunnel contains Frostcore.

If you are exploring the Deep North, treat Frostcore as a resource to collect for progression and check your in-game discoveries as you go. Do not search Mountain Frost Caves expecting to find it: those are a separate dungeon type with different documented rewards.
What Frostcore is used for
According to PC Gamer’s current Valheim 1.0 guide, collecting your first Frostcore unlocks recipes for two processing stations: the Frost Foundry and the Frigid Kiln. The guide reports these construction costs:
#1 Best Overall
- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
| Station | Reported recipe | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Frost Foundry | 10 Frostcore, 15 iron, 20 stone | PC Gamer’s Valheim 1.0 guide; verify the recipe in your current game. |
| Frigid Kiln | 10 Frostcore, 20 stone, 5 ice | PC Gamer’s Valheim 1.0 guide; verify the recipe in your current game. |
The guide also reports that the Frigid Kiln uses additional ice as fuel. The five ice listed in its construction recipe is therefore not necessarily all the ice you will need for operating it.
Why a returning player may not see the Deep North
Valheim’s world is procedurally generated. Iron Gate’s official FAQ says updates that add fixed world content apply to unexplored areas, and recommends exploring new territory or starting a new world to experience such additions. If you are returning to an older save and newer content is not available in places you have already explored, travel into unvisited territory or consider a new world.

Frostcore route versus Mountain Frost Caves
Frost Caves are Mountain dungeons, not the Deep North Frostcore route. The Valheim Gamecore Wiki lists Bats, Ulvs, Cultists, and Stone Golems among their inhabitants, and Fenris Hair, Fenris Claw, Red Jute, and Crystal Heart among their documented rewards. That makes them relevant to cave exploration and Fenris-related materials, but they are not an alternative place to gather Frostcore.
Iron Gate’s press page identifies Frost Caves as February 2022 content. Their age and Mountain location do not make them part of the later Deep North progression path.
