Find your first flax in planted fields at Fuling villages in the Plains. To keep getting more, use a Cultivator to plant flax on cultivated ground in the Plains; each mature plant yields two flax. A village patch may contain barley instead, so you may need to search more than one village.
Where can you get flax in Valheim?
Look for cultivated patches around structures in Fuling villages in the Plains. The crops in these patches can be flax or barley, so finding a village does not guarantee flax. If you find only barley, search another village.

Fuling villages are guarded, making the first collection an exploration and combat task. Approach carefully, deal with the enemies, then inspect the planted fields for flax.
How do you grow more flax?
- Keep some of your first harvest. You need flax to start a renewable crop supply, so do not use all of it for crafting.
- Prepare a Plains plot. Use a Cultivator to make cultivated ground in the Plains.
- Plant the flax. The crop requires the Plains biome; planting it in another biome will not produce a mature crop.
- Wait for it to mature, then harvest. Each planted flax yields two flax according to the Valheim Wiki’s community-maintained reference pages. The listed growth time is 4,000–5,000 seconds—66 minutes 40 seconds to 83 minutes 20 seconds, or about 2.22–2.78 in-game days. These are reference values, not hands-on test results; check them again after game updates. Valheim Wiki: Flax and Valheim Wiki: Farming
Once your crop is producing, reserve enough flax from each harvest to replant and use the remainder for crafting. The reference lists Linen thread, made from flax at a Spinning wheel, among its uses.

Why won’t flax grow outside the Plains?
Flax has a Plains biome requirement. A cultivated plot and a Cultivator are not enough if the plot is in another biome. Plant it on cultivated ground in the Plains to grow it.
How long does flax take to grow?
The Valheim Wiki lists a growth interval of 4,000–5,000 seconds: 66 minutes 40 seconds to 83 minutes 20 seconds. That is approximately 2.22–2.78 in-game days. The values come from community-maintained reference pages, whose dates are unavailable, rather than an official Iron Gate source. Flax reference · Farming reference

Should you harvest flax with a weapon or by hand?
Weapon attacks can clear mature plants quickly, but speed comes with a trade-off. A community reference says weapon harvesting does not grant Farming skill experience or trigger extra-yield chances; hand harvesting or using a Scythe Handle may be preferable when those benefits matter. | Method | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Area attack, such as Stagbreaker, Iron Sledge, or an Atgeir secondary attack | You want to clear a mature field quickly. | The reference says weapon harvesting gives no Farming skill experience and does not trigger extra-yield chances. |
| Hand harvesting or Scythe Handle | Farming skill experience or possible extra yield matters more than clearing speed. | The reference presents these as alternatives, not a guaranteed yield increase. |
