Most Valheim dedicated-server “crashes” on startup are configuration or initialization failures, not random instability. First capture the complete console output with -logFile. Then validate the password and other arguments, test the save path with a temporary world, separate Steam networking from Crossplay, and finally remove mods until a clean, version-matched server starts.

Do not keep restarting while the same log is overwritten. The final console line usually identifies whether the process rejected an argument, could not open a world or directory, failed during network setup, or threw an exception in a mod loader.

A window that closes immediately does not prove that the Valheim server executable crashed. A batch file or shell script can exit normally after Valheim rejects invalid arguments. Other failures occur later, while the server opens a world, initializes its backend, or loads BepInEx and plugins. Treat the point of failure as the first diagnostic fact.

This classification prevents a common mistake: changing router settings when the process has not even reached networking, or deleting a world when an invalid password is the real cause.

Capture the exact error before changing anything
Valheim’s dedicated-server guide documents the -logFile argument. Directing output to a known, writable file gives you evidence that survives a closing console window and lets you compare attempts.
Windows
- Stop any existing server process.
- Make a copy of the supplied Windows batch file in the same directory. Give the copy a distinct name so a Steam update is less likely to overwrite your working version.
- Add
-logFileand an absolute path to a writable log file. For example:valheim_server.exe -name "My Server" -world "MyWorld" -password "changeMe5" -savedir "D:ValheimData" -logFile "D:ValheimLogsstartup.log" - Create the log directory first if it does not exist. Run the copied batch file from a command prompt so the window remains visible.
- Save the entire output, especially the final line before exit. Do not delete or overwrite the file until you have made a backup copy.
Linux
- Copy the shell script and make sure the copy points to the intended
valheim_server.x86_64executable. - Use a writable absolute or correctly expanded path for
-logFile, for example:./valheim_server.x86_64 -name "My Server" -world "MyWorld" -password "changeMe5" -savedir "/srv/valheim" -logFile "/srv/valheim-logs/startup.log" - Run the copy in a terminal and retain the complete output. If the log cannot be created, fix the directory ownership or permissions before diagnosing Valheim itself.
When reporting the problem, include the executable name, installed server build, operating system, complete launch line with the password redacted, save directory, backend choice, and the final log lines. Those details distinguish a reproducible configuration error from a one-off process termination.

Argument validation is one of the most frequent reasons a start script closes immediately. Check spelling, quotation marks, and the value assigned to each option rather than copying a line that only looks correct.

Password rules that cause immediate exits
Community troubleshooting reports identify three password mistakes that commonly make the start script terminate: omitting -password, using fewer than five characters, or placing the password in the server name. Use a password of five or more characters and make it unrelated to both the -name and -world values. Keep the password out of shared logs and support posts.

Quoting and path checks
Use straight double quotes around values that contain spaces. Check for smart quotes copied from a web page, an unmatched quote at the end of the line, a trailing character in the executable name, and a -savedir path that points to a file instead of a directory. On Linux, confirm the script has execute permission and that the path uses the correct capitalization.
Verify the save directory and world files
Iron Gate’s documentation gives platform defaults and supports overriding them with -savedir. A missing directory, read-only mount, or wrong user account can look like a server crash because the process exits while opening the world.

Test with a temporary world
- Stop the server and copy the existing world files to separate storage before editing, moving, or deleting anything.
- Keep the same executable, password, backend, and save directory, but change
-worldto a new temporary name such asStartupTest. - Start once with
-logFile. If the temporary world loads, the original world name, files, or world-specific path is implicated rather than the basic installation. - Stop the server cleanly, restore a known-good backup of the original world, and investigate that copy. Do not delete the original as a first response.
If even a new world fails, leave the original files untouched and return to argument, permission, backend, or mod checks. This split test is safer and faster than repeatedly attempting to repair a potentially valuable save.
Separate startup from connectivity problems
A server that starts and remains running has a different problem from one that exits during initialization. Test local process stability first; only then troubleshoot whether other players can connect.

Steam backend
Iron Gate states that Valheim uses the configured port and the next port: “Valheim uses the specified Port AND specified Port+1.” With the default configuration, that is ports 2456 and 2457. Allow the dedicated-server executable through the host firewall and make both ports available when your network setup requires inbound access. A firewall rule or router mapping cannot repair an invalid password or unreadable world, so perform this check only after the process stays running.
Crossplay backend
When -crossplay is intentional, Valheim uses a relay for outside-LAN access. Crossplay therefore does not require router port forwarding for players connecting from outside the local network. Do not assume that a successful Crossplay setup will behave like a Steam-backend server on loopback or LAN tests; test from the player locations you actually need to support.

Remove mods and version drift from the equation
Game updates can break BepInEx packs and third-party plugins. A modded server can therefore crash before it presents a useful world or network error, especially when the installed loader or plugin targets a different Valheim build.
- Stop the server and make a complete copy of the installation and save data.
- Move the BepInEx directory, loader files, and third-party plugins out of the server directory rather than deleting them.
- Start the base server with the same world test and
-logFile. A clean launch establishes that the executable, arguments, save path, and backend work without extensions. - Check the installed Valheim build against the supported version listed by each loader and plugin. Do not assume that a plugin update is compatible merely because its name is unchanged.
- Restore one loader or plugin group at a time, starting the server and retaining the log after each change. The first reintroduced component associated with the failure is the one to update, replace, or remove.
If the clean server fails too, mods are not the primary cause. Keep the installation clean while you complete the argument, world, permission, and backend tests.

Windows and Linux recovery checks
Windows checklist
- Run the copied batch file from Command Prompt instead of double-clicking it so the exit code and final console lines remain visible.
- Confirm that the account running the script can create files in the chosen
-savedirand log directory. - Check that security software or the Windows firewall has not blocked the executable after an update.
- Use fully quoted paths, especially when the server or data directory is under a path containing spaces.
- Compare the script with your recorded version after every Steam update; updates can reset the original script.
Linux checklist
- Confirm the binary is
valheim_server.x86_64, is executable, and is launched by the intended user. - Verify ownership and write permission for both
-savedirand the parent directory of-logFile. - Check that the shell script uses Unix line endings and that paths match Linux capitalization.
- Do not mix a service account’s home-directory saves with a different interactive user’s default path; set
-savedirexplicitly when accounts differ. - Keep the terminal output and log from the same attempt so a permission error is not confused with a later network failure.
A safe, reproducible diagnostic workflow
Use this order so each test changes one variable and preserves the evidence from the previous attempt.

-nameand-world, a five-character-or-longer password unrelated to either name, and a writable-savedir. - Test the world independently. Back up the files, start a temporary world, and use the result to decide whether the original world needs restoration from backup.
- Remove network ambiguity. For Steam backend, handle the executable firewall rule and the selected port plus the next port. For Crossplay, verify that the relay mode is intentional and do not infer failure from a Steam-style LAN test.
- Eliminate mod-loader causes. Start without BepInEx and plugins, confirm the base server, then restore compatible components incrementally.
- Make the installation reproducible. Record the server build, launch arguments, save path, backend, and mod list with each backup. Stop with
Ctrl+Cwhenever possible.
Backups, shutdown, and update protection
Protect recoverability before experimenting with world files or mods. Copy the original world and the current launch script before changing either. A clean shutdown with Ctrl+C gives the process an opportunity to finish its normal save work; killing the window should be reserved for a process that will not respond.
Iron Gate’s documented defaults provide reference points for a backup policy: a 1,800-second (30-minute) save interval, a 7,200-second (2-hour) short-backup interval, and a 43,200-second (12-hour) long-backup interval. These are defaults, not guarantees that protect against every disk, user, or configuration failure. Keep copies outside the live server directory and retain at least one known-good version before testing a mod or replacing a world.
Steam updates can reset the original startup script. Maintain a custom copy, record its arguments, and compare it with the newly installed files after updates. This also makes a post-update failure reproducible instead of forcing you to reconstruct the command from memory.
Common failure branches
The window closes instantly and no log appears
Run the copied script from a terminal and verify that the log directory exists and is writable. If the executable path is wrong, correct that before interpreting the absence of a log as a Valheim crash. Once logging works, use the final line to distinguish argument rejection from a runtime exception.
The password looks correct but the process still exits
Count the characters, confirm that the -password token is present exactly once, and ensure the password is not the server or world name. Remove smart quotes and test with a simple temporary name and a new password that meets the length rule.
A new world works but the normal world does not
Keep the working launch line unchanged. The original world or its files are now the variable under suspicion. Stop the server, preserve the failing files, and restore a known-good backup rather than deleting or repeatedly rewriting the original.
The clean server works but the modded server exits
Leave the clean installation as a control copy. Check each BepInEx pack and plugin against the installed Valheim build, then restore components individually so the first failing addition is identifiable.
The process stays up but nobody outside the host can join
This is a connectivity issue, not a startup crash. Confirm the selected backend. For Steam backend, review firewall access and both required ports. For Crossplay, confirm relay mode and test from an external player location without assuming that router forwarding is required.
When a managed server is a sensible alternative
If maintaining launch scripts, permissions, updates, backups, firewall rules, and mod compatibility is the recurring problem, a managed Valheim hosting service can move those operational tasks to a provider. Evaluate any service for its documented Valheim version support, backup controls, log access, restore process, mod policy, and ability to export your world. Hosting does not remove the need to diagnose an incompatible world or mod, but it can reduce failures caused by a neglected local installation.
