To spawn an item in Valheim, enable the in-game console, enter devcommands, then use spawn [ItemName] [Amount] [Level]. Replace ItemName with the exact internal ID from an item list. For example, spawn Wood 50 creates 50 pieces of wood, while spawn Deer 1 3 creates one level-3 deer.

What the spawn command does
The spawn command creates an item or a named world entity in your game. Its basic syntax is:

ItemNameis the internal item or NPC name, not necessarily the name shown in the game’s menus.Amountis the number of items or entities to create.Levelis a value from 1 to 4, used mainly to set a creature’s level.
For an ordinary item, the level argument is not needed. Creature spawns start at level 1 by default, so you can omit the level for a basic creature. The item-ID reference documents these arguments and examples, including spawn Deer 1 3 for a level-3 deer. (Gamecore’s Valheim item-ID reference.)
Enable the console and devcommands
Steam on PC
- In Steam, open your Library and right-click Valheim, then choose Properties.
- Under General, add
-consoleto the game’s launch options. - Start Valheim and enter a world. Press
F5to open the console. - Type
devcommandsand press Enter. You should then be able to use the cheat commands available in that session.
Valheim.tools also lists console-enabling methods for PC Game Pass and Xbox, but the referenced instructions do not specify the exact shortcut or button combination. Because platform controls can differ, check the current platform-specific instructions rather than assuming the Steam shortcut applies.

Where devcommands work
The cited console references say cheat commands work in single-player or when you host a game, but not on dedicated servers. If you are playing on a dedicated server, enabling the console locally does not make the spawn command available there.
Find the exact item ID
Use a searchable Valheim spawn-ID table or a categorized item-ID reference before entering a command. The Gamecore reference groups IDs by categories such as creatures and armor; Valheim.tools provides a searchable table. At the time of its 2026 listing, Valheim.tools displayed 1,636 searchable spawnable IDs. That count describes the table at that time, not a guarantee that every game version or future update will contain precisely the same set.

IDs are internal command names. They can differ from the displayed name, so do not assume that a visible label can simply be typed into the command. Copy the command value from the table, preserving its spelling. Examples shown in the references include:

Spawn an item: examples and quantity behavior
Once you have opened the console and enabled devcommands, enter the command and press Enter. These examples use IDs documented in the item reference:

The amount is the number of separate objects created. This matters when spawning resources: a large number can mean a large number of world drops, rather than one neatly packed inventory stack. If the purpose is to obtain a manageable quantity, start with a modest amount and check the result before issuing another command.
Spawn creatures and set their level
Use a creature’s exact ID as the item name. For example, spawn Deer creates a deer at the default level, while spawn Deer 1 3 creates one level-3 deer. The reference describes that level-3 deer as a two-star deer.

The level option is mainly useful for creatures. Increasing the level changes the creature’s star tier; it does not turn a spawned creature into an inventory item or change the quantity argument.
Choose between spawning items and creatures
Item spawning is usually the simpler option: identify the item, choose a quantity, and omit the level. Creature spawning adds a level setting and can create more consequential cleanup and performance problems, particularly when high-level creatures die and drop large numbers of items.
- Need gear or resources? Use the item ID and a small, deliberate amount. Keep in mind that each unit is created separately.
- Need an NPC or animal in the world? Use its creature ID. Add a level only when you intend to set its level or star tier.
- Unsure about the ID? Find it in a reference table instead of guessing from the display name.
Performance risks and cleanup
Spawning thousands of drops at once can freeze the game before the objects have a chance to autostack. The developer-console reference also warns that level-10-or-higher creatures can freeze the game when they die because they drop thousands of items. Avoid extreme quantities and unusually high creature levels, especially in a world you want to keep playable.

Some spawned entities cannot be removed without mods. For spawned traders, the item-ID reference identifies forcedelete as the known removal method. The console reference gives its syntax as:
forcedelete [radius=5] [*name]
The default radius is five meters. The command clears buildings, items, and entities within its radius, so use it carefully: it is a broad cleanup tool, not a precise undo for a single spawn. The reference says it does not remove certain objects, including players, tombstones, Valkyrie, points of interest, dungeons, Vegvisirs, and boss stones.

The console will not open
On Steam, confirm that -console is in Valheim’s launch options, start the game after adding it, and try F5 while in a world. The listed methods for other platforms differ; do not rely on PC instructions for Xbox or Game Pass.
The spawn command is unavailable
Open the console and enter devcommands first. The cited references limit cheat-command use to single-player or games you host; they do not support using the command on a dedicated server.

The command does not create the expected thing
Check that the ID is copied exactly from a spawn-ID reference. A displayed item name may not match its internal command ID. Also check the command’s argument order: name first, amount second, and level third.
The game freezes after a spawn
A very large number of individual drops or the death of a very high-level creature can create enough drops to freeze the game. The references warn about these specific risks; they do not describe a guaranteed recovery method. If you are testing commands in a world you care about, avoid large quantities and high-level creatures.
