An unofficial project known as rood-boi recompiles Vagrant Story into native x86-64 builds for Linux and Windows. It is not a PlayStation emulator: the renderer can use Vulkan or OpenGL native meshes, hardware ray-traced shadows, path-traced or probe-based global illumination, volumetric haze, and a live camera-and-light editor. The most meaningful documented gameplay change is optional AI-controlled companion Callo Merlose, while the project also lists several quality-of-life tools. It remains work in progress, and you must supply your own legally obtained, unmodified game image.
What the unofficial port actually is
rood-boi rebuilds decompiled PlayStation game code as a native application for x86-64 computers. That execution model differs from emulation: the PC runs a recompilation rather than interpreting the original PlayStation processor instructions through a virtual console.

Linux is the primary documented environment. Windows builds are also available, with an easier builder workflow described by the project. Neither platform package includes Square Enix’s copyrighted game data. You need your own unmodified Vagrant Story disc image and must point the build process to it.
The project is explicitly unofficial and unfinished. Compatibility, bugs and update behavior can change as development continues, so a successful build should be treated as an experimental way to play rather than a supported commercial release.

What path tracing adds to Vagrant Story
Modern lighting modes
The port’s renderer supports Vulkan and OpenGL native meshes. On suitable Vulkan hardware it can add ray-traced shadows and path-traced global illumination. A probe-based global-illumination mode is also described, giving users a less demanding alternative to full path tracing. Volumetric haze is another listed effect.
These options affect lighting and atmosphere, not the underlying story or level design. They can make corridors, walls and spell effects respond with more sophisticated shadows and indirect light than the original PlayStation renderer could produce, but the visual result depends on the selected renderer and the build’s current state.

Live camera and lighting control
A live editor lets you move the camera and place lights while the game is running. That is useful for experimenting with composition, inspecting areas and tuning a scene, but it is a development-style tool rather than a new campaign or level editor.
GPU requirements
Ray tracing requires a Vulkan-capable GPU with hardware ray-tracing support. The available project description does not name a minimum graphics-card model or a tested frame-rate target. Path tracing should therefore be considered an optional enhanced mode. If your hardware cannot provide the required Vulkan ray-tracing features, use the non-ray-traced renderer or probe-based lighting where supported.

The standout gameplay change: Callo Merlose can join Ashley
The optional Merlose mode changes the original single-character experience without rewriting the narrative. Callo Merlose follows Ashley through rooms as an AI-controlled partner and can fight enemies, heal, and cast spells autonomously.
How the companion system works
- Merlose has independent statistics, equipment and progression rather than simply duplicating Ashley’s values.
- You can configure which spells she can use.
- Friendly targeting is built into her behavior, allowing support actions for the party.
- A catch-up system helps her rejoin Ashley when room transitions or movement leave her behind.
Plot events and cutscenes remain those of the original game. Merlose is therefore a gameplay overhaul layered onto the existing adventure, not an alternate storyline.

What are the “two new gameplay additions”?
Project descriptions clearly document the Merlose companion and several other additions, but they do not establish a definitive, canonical two-item list matching that wording. The second category is presented as a group of quality-of-life and tooling changes rather than one consistently named feature.

If a release announcement later identifies two specific additions, its wording should take precedence. Based on the documented features available now, Merlose is the clearest standalone gameplay system; the remaining changes are best described as quality-of-life, rendering or editor enhancements instead of claiming an unverified pair.

How to run the native build
- Obtain the game data legally. Create an unmodified image from your own Vagrant Story disc. The port does not distribute the original files.
- Choose your platform build. Use the Linux workflow if you want the project’s primary documented environment, or the Windows build and its easier builder process if you prefer Windows.
- Install the graphics prerequisites. Keep current Vulkan or OpenGL drivers installed. Hardware ray-tracing features are only needed for the ray-traced modes, not for trying the base native build with simpler rendering.
- Build or launch the project as documented for your release. Point its builder or launcher at the game image and follow the README supplied with that particular version; command names and configuration files can change during work-in-progress development.
- Start with conservative rendering. Verify that the game loads with the non-ray-traced renderer first, then enable probe-based lighting, ray-traced shadows or path tracing one at a time.
- Test the optional systems separately. Confirm ordinary combat and room transitions before enabling Merlose, then check her equipment, spell selection and catch-up behavior.
Keep a backup of your original disc image and save files. Experimental recompilations can introduce regressions, and a later build may behave differently from an earlier one.

Why the original disc still matters
Square Enix’s catalog lists a Japanese PS one Books edition released on July 20, 2006, at 6,800 yen before tax. That catalog entry is historical, not a current price, and it does not mean a new retail edition is included with the PC project. The relevant point for this port is that the game data must come from the player’s own legally obtained copy.
What to expect from the project today
The native build can deliver effects and tools that no original PlayStation release could provide, while Merlose changes how encounters and exploration play. It also carries the trade-offs of an unofficial work-in-progress: no guaranteed hardware baseline, no bundled game assets, platform-specific setup and the possibility of bugs or incomplete features. For a faithful original experience, emulation or original hardware remains simpler. For path-traced lighting, live scene control and an optional AI partner, the native project is the distinctive choice.
