Where Iron Ore comes from
Iron Ore appears in nodes throughout the world beyond Farbane Woods, but Dunley Farmlands is the practical farming region for a character entering the iron stage of progression. You can mine exposed nodes across the region, search containers for additional pieces, or travel to one of two named locations with much denser deposits.

The Haunted Iron Mine is in southern Dunley Farmlands and is the principal dedicated Iron Ore farm. Its value is concentration: instead of following a long route between isolated surface rocks, you can work through an area containing many nodes and additional chests. That density also makes your return trip more efficient when your inventory is limited.
Plan for combat rather than treating the mine as a safe quarry. Undead enemies occupy the area, and boss activity can make a run more dangerous than ordinary surface mining. Clear enough space to retreat, keep an escape route in mind, and avoid filling your inventory before you have dealt with nearby threats. The mine is usually the best destination when you already meet the weapon requirement and want a substantial haul in one visit.

Iron Cave: a high-yield alternative
The Iron Cave lies northwest of the Haunted Iron Mine. It contains Stone, Iron Ore and Hell’s Clarion, but its entrance is not available through ordinary movement. You need Bear Form or explosives to get inside. Once there, expect Rock Elementals and Iron Golems, so the cave is best used when your character can handle heavier resistance as well as the access requirement.
Use the cave when you have already unlocked Bear Form or can make the required explosives and want another concentrated source. Its access gate makes it less convenient than surface nodes for a first trip, but it can become an efficient part of a repeat route once the entry method and combat preparation are routine.
Surface nodes, barrels and chests
Surface nodes throughout Dunley Farmlands are the simplest starting point. They do not require the cave entrance method, and they let you gather ore while travelling between other objectives. Barrels and chests in Dunley can also contain Iron Ore. Treat containers as supplemental loot rather than a dependable substitute for mining: their contents are incidental, while a node route gives you a deliberate way to increase your total.
Choosing a farming route

This choice is mainly about time, risk and access. The Haunted Iron Mine minimizes travel between deposits and adds chests, but the enemies can interrupt a run. The Iron Cave offers another rich route, at the cost of a gated entrance and stronger threats. Surface mining has the lowest logistical barrier and works well as a fallback when you are not ready for either named location.

Mining requirements and the large deposits
Ordinary Iron Ore nodes
Ordinary Iron Ore nodes require a Gear Level 12 weapon tier, identified as Merciless Copper, or a higher tier. If attacks do not damage an iron node, check your equipped weapon’s gear level before changing your route. A mace is commonly recommended for ore nodes because it receives increased damage against node types; that is efficiency guidance, not a universal entry requirement. The decisive gate for ordinary nodes is the weapon tier.
Massive Iron Ore deposits
The oversized deposits use a separate requirement. To mine a massive Iron Ore deposit, you need Gear Level 18 (Merciless Iron) or higher with Bear Form active, or you can destroy it with a Minor Explosive Box. Bear Form is therefore both an access tool for the Iron Cave and one method for working these larger deposits, but it does not remove the need for the stated gear level. If you do not yet meet that threshold, focus on ordinary nodes rather than spending explosives or risking a failed attempt.

A practical Iron Ore run
- Equip the correct weapon. Confirm that your weapon reaches Gear Level 12 (Merciless Copper) or higher before leaving for Dunley. Bring a mace if you want the node-damage bonus commonly recommended for mining.
- Start with accessible Dunley nodes. Mine exposed deposits while travelling and use them to confirm that your weapon can damage iron. This avoids committing to a deep location with an unsuitable loadout.
- Move to the Haunted Iron Mine. Enter the southern Dunley location when you want concentrated deposits. Search nearby chests after securing the area, since they can add ore without replacing the node route.
- Manage combat around the haul. Deal with undead threats and watch for boss activity before mining a crowded section. Keep enough mobility and inventory space to leave safely rather than forcing a final node while surrounded.
- Add the Iron Cave when ready. Once Bear Form or explosives are available and you can handle Rock Elementals and Iron Golems, use the northwest cave as a second high-yield destination.
- Reserve explosives for the right target. A Minor Explosive Box can open or destroy massive deposits, but ordinary nodes already work with the copper-tier weapon. Do not consume explosives for a task your current weapon can perform.
Unlocking the Furnace recipe and Smithy
Mining ore is only half of the progression. Iron Ingot smelting and the Smithy are unlocked by defeating Quincey the Bandit King. He is a level 37 V Blood Carrier located in the Bandit Stronghold in Farbane Woods. Until this unlock is complete, collecting Iron Ore can prepare your stockpile, but it does not give you access to the iron-smelting recipe.
When planning the boss objective, distinguish the location from your later mining route: Quincey is in Farbane Woods, while the main ore farms are in Dunley Farmlands. After the fight, verify that both the Iron Ingot recipe and Smithy are available before returning with a large load of ore. The Smithy unlock is important because iron is not merely a furnace ingredient; it supports the next equipment and station tier.

How to smelt Iron Ingots
The standard Furnace conversion
Place Iron Ore in a Furnace after Quincey’s unlock has been obtained. The standard recipe is:
20 Iron Ore → 1 Iron Ingot
The item recipe table on V Rising Wiki displays this as “Iron Ingot 20 (15) Iron Ore Furnace” (last modified June 19, 2025). The parenthetical 15 is the page’s advanced-efficiency notation. It should not be treated as proof of a server-wide rate change or a universal reduction for every player; use 20 ore per ingot as the standard conversion unless your own game configuration or an explicitly documented efficiency setting says otherwise.

Planning your stockpile
Because the conversion is a fixed ratio in the standard recipe, divide the ore you carry by 20 when estimating complete ingots. For example, 40 Iron Ore produces two ingots, while 100 produces five, with any remainder staying as ore. This simple calculation helps you decide whether a trip is worth returning from immediately or whether to keep mining until the next complete batch.
- Defeat Quincey the Bandit King and confirm the Iron Ingot recipe.
- Build or use a Furnace at your base.
- Load Iron Ore into the Furnace and start production.
- Collect the resulting ingots and keep spare ore for the next batch instead of assuming the parenthetical efficiency figure applies automatically.
What Iron Ingots are used for
Iron Ingots are a progression material rather than a single-purpose component. They are used for iron weapons and armor, then continue appearing in recipes for higher-tier stations, construction components and furnishings.

This broad recipe footprint is why the Haunted Iron Mine remains useful after you have crafted your first iron equipment. A small initial batch can disappear quickly when you unlock several stations or begin upgrading your base, so keep mining trips on your progression plan instead of treating iron as a one-time milestone.

“My weapon does no damage to the node.”
Check that the equipped weapon reaches Gear Level 12 (Merciless Copper). A lower-tier weapon cannot substitute for the required mining tier. If you are targeting a massive deposit, the ordinary-node requirement is not enough: you need Gear Level 18 (Merciless Iron) with Bear Form or a Minor Explosive Box.
“I cannot enter the Iron Cave.”
The cave entrance requires Bear Form or explosives. Return after obtaining one of those options rather than searching for a normal doorway. Once inside, remember that Rock Elementals and Iron Golems are part of the cave’s threat profile.
“I have ore but cannot craft ingots.”
Iron smelting is gated behind Quincey the Bandit King. Travel to the Bandit Stronghold in Farbane Woods and defeat this level 37 V Blood Carrier, then check that the Smithy and Iron Ingot recipe have unlocked.
“The Furnace seems to use a different amount.”
The standard recipe is 20 Iron Ore for one ingot. The recipe table’s “20 (15)” display includes advanced-efficiency notation, not a blanket claim that every Furnace consumes 15 ore. Check your server or game settings if your observed cost differs from the standard recipe.

“I am finding too little from containers.”
Barrels and chests in Dunley can supplement a run, but they are not a guaranteed replacement for nodes. Build your route around exposed deposits, then search containers when they are safely available.
Efficient progression order
For most characters, the least wasteful order is to reach the copper-tier weapon requirement, gather accessible ore in Dunley, defeat Quincey to unlock smelting, and then run the Haunted Iron Mine for concentrated batches. Add the Iron Cave after Bear Form or explosives become available and your character can withstand its enemies. Use massive deposits only after meeting their higher gear requirement or when the explosive cost is justified by your immediate need.
This sequence keeps each gate aligned with the next objective: the weapon tier lets you mine ordinary nodes, the boss unlocks the Furnace recipe and Smithy, and later gear and movement options open the cave and massive deposits. The result is a repeatable supply of ingots for equipment, reinforced building materials, advanced stations and storage or decorative projects.
