To fish in V Rising, defeat Rufus the Foreman (level 20), craft the Fishing Pole at a Woodworking Bench for 120 Wood, and use it at a designated fishing spot. Put unwanted fish into The Devourer to convert them into Fish Oil, Fish Bones, Scales, or, for the rare catch called The Fish, Gold Jewelry as well. The quickest dependable oil supply combines fishing with loot runs through Brighthaven Docks and Mosswick Village.

What you need before fishing
Fishing is gated behind early boss and crafting progression rather than being available from the start. Follow this order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Defeat Rufus the Foreman, level 20. Gamer Guides identifies Rufus as the unlock that provides the Woodworking Bench and Fishing Pole recipes.
- Build a Woodworking Bench. You need the bench to craft the pole.
- Craft the Fishing Pole. The item database lists a cost of 120 Wood.
- Unlock The Devourer. The same guide associates Lidia the Chaos Archer with the Devourer recipe. You need this station to salvage fish into Fish Oil and other materials.
These unlocks are separate: Rufus gets you equipped to catch fish, while Lidia is associated with the conversion station. If you can fish but cannot process the catch, check that The Devourer has been unlocked and placed in your castle.
How to craft the Fishing Pole
- Collect at least 120 Wood.
- Open your Woodworking Bench.
- Select Fishing Pole and craft it.
- Move the finished pole into your hotbar or otherwise equip it before traveling to water.
The 120-Wood figure is the listed recipe cost; it is not a durability charge or a per-catch expense. Crafting one pole is therefore the principal material investment for starting a fishing trip.

How to find a fishing spot
A lake, river, or shoreline is not automatically fishable. Fishing uses designated fishing spots in bodies of water. Travel to a spot, equip the Fishing Pole, and interact there to cast. The fishing reference notes that map locations have different catch probabilities, so the zone you choose changes which species you are likely to receive.
Plan around the species you need
Choose a zone according to the fish’s documented distribution instead of repeatedly fishing the nearest water. For example, Rainbow Trout is listed at 22% in Silverlight Hills but only 7% in Farbane Woods, while Swamp Dweller is associated with a 19.5% chance in the Cursed Forest. The percentages below are location probabilities reported by the cited 2022 V Rising Wiki tables, not a guarantee that every cast will produce that fish.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExpect probability, not a fixed rotation
A fishing spot does not promise a particular species. A run aimed at Sage Fish can produce other catches, and the same zone can be useful for several objectives. Bring enough inventory space to keep valuable fish separate from the ones you plan to salvage.
Fishing procedure, step by step
- Equip the pole. Confirm that the Fishing Pole is your active item before interacting with the spot.
- Use a designated spot. Stand at the water location identified as a fishing spot and start the fishing interaction.
- Collect the catch. Fish are acquired with the pole at the spot; each species has its own uses and salvage output.
- Sort immediately. Keep fish required for potions, prisoner care, or Vermin Nest spawners. Mark the remainder for The Devourer.
- Return to storage or processing. Deposit useful fish safely, then process only the surplus so a valuable ingredient is not accidentally destroyed.
Fishing is most efficient when you decide the purpose of the trip first. A fish that yields six Fish Oil may be worth considerably more as a potion ingredient or prisoner treatment, so “more oil per cast” is not the only useful measure.

Fish uses and Fish Oil yields
The table combines the documented zone probabilities, direct uses, and salvage outputs. Fish Oil and Fish Bone values come from the cited item and fishing tables; the named evidence lists six-oil, ten-oil, and 50-oil outputs in the 2022 V Rising Wiki data.
| Fish | Documented locations and probability | Keep it for | Salvage output in The Devourer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fierce Stinger | Farbane Woods 10%; Dunley Farmlands 12%; Hallowed Mountains 12% | Potion of Rage ingredient | 1 Fish Bone + 6 Fish Oil |
| Swamp Dweller | Cursed Forest 19.5% | Witch Potion ingredient | 1 Fish Bone + 10 Fish Oil + 20 Scales |
| Fat Goby | All zones; most common in Hallowed Mountains at 26% | Fully restores a prisoner’s health | 1 Fish Bone + 6 Fish Oil |
| Rainbow Trout | Farbane Woods 7%; Dunley Farmlands 12%; Silverlight Hills 22% | Lowers prisoner misery by 5–10% | 1 Fish Bone + 6 Fish Oil |
| Sage Fish | Dunley Farmlands 1%; Silverlight Hills 10% | Restores 30–70% prisoner health and lowers misery by 15–30% | 1 Fish Bone + 6 Fish Oil |
| Twilight Snapper | All zones; most common in Dunley Farmlands at 14% | Summons Putrid Rat in a Vermin Nest | 1 Fish Bone + 10 Fish Oil + 20 Scales |
| Golden River Bass | Silverlight Hills 14% | Summons Spiderling | 1 Fish Bone + 10 Fish Oil + 20 Scales |
| Blood Snapper | Cursed Forest 12.5% | Summons Mosquito | 1 Fish Bone + 10 Fish Oil + 20 Scales |
| The Fish | Cursed Forest 1% | No separate use is listed in the cited table | 8 Gold Jewelry + 50 Fish Oil + 250 Scales |
Why six Fish Oil is not always the best choice
Fierce Stinger, Fat Goby, Rainbow Trout, and Sage Fish each produce six Fish Oil, but each also has a specific role. Use Fierce Stinger for a Potion of Rage, Fat Goby to fully heal a prisoner, Rainbow Trout to reduce misery by 5–10%, and Sage Fish when its larger health and misery ranges are more useful. Salvage duplicates after those needs are covered.

When ten Fish Oil is worth prioritizing
Swamp Dweller, Twilight Snapper, Golden River Bass, and Blood Snapper each produce ten Fish Oil and 20 Scales. That extra yield makes them attractive oil candidates, yet each is also tied to a potion or Vermin Nest summon. Keep the quantity needed for your next Witch Potion or spawner before loading the rest into The Devourer.
The Fish: exceptional yield, very low probability
The Fish is listed at 1% in the Cursed Forest. Its 50 Fish Oil, 250 Scales, and eight Gold Jewelry make it the largest documented single-fish salvage payout in this guide, but the 1% figure makes it an opportunistic bonus rather than a predictable farming plan. Do not base a timed oil run on finding one.

How to make Fish Oil with The Devourer
- Return to your castle with the fish you want to process.
- Open The Devourer after unlocking it through the progression associated with Lidia the Chaos Archer.
- Place surplus fish in the machine’s input slots.
- Start the salvage process and collect Fish Oil plus any Fish Bone, Scales, or Gold Jewelry produced by that species.
- Move the outputs to storage before processing another batch, and leave reserved fish out of the input queue.
The Devourer is a conversion route, not a universal upgrade. It removes the fish itself, so process only catches that are not needed for prisoner care, potions, or Vermin Nest spawners. Keeping separate storage bins for “use” and “salvage” fish prevents the most expensive mistake: destroying a rare Sage Fish or a required spawner ingredient for a modest oil return.
Fastest ways to farm Fish Oil
There are two complementary methods: salvage fish for a repeatable, controllable conversion, and loot settlements and containers for direct Fish Oil finds. Gamer Guides identifies Brighthaven Docks as a particularly productive route and also cites Mosswick Village as a settlement source. Fish Oil can appear in chests, containers, and destructible objects, so a route that checks all three is more reliable than searching only for fish.
| Method | Unlock or travel cost | Yield pattern | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing, then salvaging | Rufus the Foreman, level 20; Woodworking Bench; 120 Wood for the pole; The Devourer progression associated with Lidia | 6 or 10 Fish Oil from many fish; 50 from The Fish | Repeatable supply when you already travel near fishing spots | Time spent finding spots and accepting probabilistic catches |
| Brighthaven Docks loot route | Travel through the settlement and search its lootable objects | Fish Oil can be found in chests, containers, and destructible objects | High-density oil search when you can safely clear the docks | Enemy pressure and route time; drops are not guaranteed per object |
| Mosswick Village loot route | Travel to the settlement and search available containers and objects | Documented settlement source of Fish Oil | Combine with nearby objectives or a broader loot circuit | Less control over the exact amount obtained on each visit |
Best repeatable loop
- Take the Fishing Pole and enough inventory space for a mixed catch.
- Fish while traveling through a zone that matches your target species, such as Silverlight Hills for Rainbow Trout or Cursed Forest for Swamp Dweller and Blood Snapper.
- Return to the castle and reserve potion, prisoner, and spawner fish.
- Salvage duplicates and low-priority fish in The Devourer.
- When you need a larger burst of oil, run Brighthaven Docks and inspect chests, containers, and destructible objects; include Mosswick Village when it fits your travel path.
This loop reduces wasted travel: fishing supplies the conversion input, while settlement loot can add oil without waiting for another cast cycle.
Choosing the fastest route for your situation
- Already near a fishing spot: fish first, because the pole is a sunk crafting cost and the catch can provide oil plus Fish Bones or Scales.
- Need oil immediately: prioritize the Brighthaven Docks route and search every documented loot source rather than relying on a rare species.
- Need prisoner supplies: fish for the relevant species and preserve it; salvaging a six-oil catch can cost more than it saves if you then lack healing or misery reduction.
- Need spawner materials: retain Twilight Snapper, Golden River Bass, and Blood Snapper before processing any duplicates.
- Hunting the maximum single payout: fish in the Cursed Forest for the chance at The Fish, but treat its 1% probability as a bonus and use ordinary catches to meet your baseline oil demand.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Trying to fish in any water
Only designated fishing spots work. If the fishing interaction does not appear, move to a marked or otherwise recognized spot instead of spending time along random shorelines.

Assuming a zone guarantees a species
Zone percentages are probabilities. A 22% Rainbow Trout listing in Silverlight Hills improves your odds relative to the listed 7% Farbane Woods value; it does not make every cast a trout.

Salvaging a fish needed elsewhere
Check the “keep it for” purpose in the table before using The Devourer. This matters especially for Sage Fish, Fat Goby, and the spawner fish, whose direct effects can be more valuable than six or ten Fish Oil.
Confusing the fishing unlock with the oil-processing unlock
Rufus is the progression step tied to the pole and Woodworking Bench. The Devourer is associated with Lidia the Chaos Archer in the cited guide. If one recipe is missing, defeating the other boss may be the required progression step.
Planning around The Fish
The Fish has the best documented oil output, but its 1% Cursed Forest probability is too low for dependable scheduling. Build your stock from common six- and ten-oil catches and settlement loot; celebrate The Fish when it appears.

A practical Fish Oil stockpiling checklist
- Defeat Rufus the Foreman at level 20.
- Build the Woodworking Bench and gather 120 Wood.
- Craft and equip the Fishing Pole.
- Unlock The Devourer through the progression associated with Lidia the Chaos Archer.
- Identify a designated fishing spot before casting.
- Choose a zone based on the species you need, not just the nearest body of water.
- Separate potion, prisoner-care, and Vermin Nest fish from salvage fish.
- Process surplus catches and collect all secondary outputs.
- Run Brighthaven Docks for a concentrated loot search, checking chests, containers, and destructible objects.
- Add Mosswick Village to the route when its travel and safety costs make sense.
What to prioritize by goal
For general Fish Oil
Use common catches that have no immediate role, then salvage ten-oil species after reserving spawner and potion requirements. Supplement the conversion loop with Brighthaven Docks and Mosswick Village loot.
Recommended Free Tools
For prisoner management
Keep Fat Goby for full health restoration, Sage Fish for 30–70% health restoration plus a 15–30% misery reduction, and Rainbow Trout for a 5–10% misery reduction. Only process extras.
For alchemy
Reserve Fierce Stinger for Potion of Rage and Swamp Dweller for Witch Potion. Their six- and ten-oil salvage values should not override an imminent potion requirement.
For Vermin Nest production
Retain Twilight Snapper for Putrid Rat, Golden River Bass for Spiderling, and Blood Snapper for Mosquito. Salvage duplicates once the next summon is covered.
For maximum materials from one catch
The Fish is the standout: eight Gold Jewelry, 50 Fish Oil, and 250 Scales at the listed salvage output. Its 1% Cursed Forest probability means it is a lucky addition to a normal route, not a replacement for one.
