Uwe Boll used the new Street Fighter movie’s harsh reviews to revive an old argument about his own video-game adaptations. After GamesRadar+ reported the film’s negative reception on October 15, 2026, Boll posted on X: “Don’t ever bash my movies again.” The joke suggests that a major-studio Street Fighter film being widely criticized makes his own adaptations look less uniquely disastrous.
What Uwe Boll said about the new Street Fighter
Boll’s post was a short response to the 2026 film’s reviews, not a detailed defense of any particular movie. His exact line was: “Don’t ever bash my movies again.” The wording is deliberately comic. Boll is claiming that critics who treated his game-based films as unusually poor now have another high-profile adaptation to criticize.

The timing matters because the new film is a large studio production with a recognizable cast and one of gaming’s best-known brands. Its reception gives Boll a fresh opportunity to argue that bad video-game movies are not solely his legacy.

How the 2026 movie was reviewed
GamesRadar+ reported that the film opened at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes and later stood at 45%. Those figures represent the score at the respective points reported in 2026, rather than a permanent rating. GamesRadar+ gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars.
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | Result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes score | 41% | Opening figure reported by GamesRadar+, 2026 |
| Rotten Tomatoes score | 45% | Later figure reported by GamesRadar+, 2026 |
| GamesRadar+ review | 2.5 out of 5 stars | Called the film an “overstuffed miss” |
| Individual critic grades listed by Rotten Tomatoes | D-, B-, and 3/5 | Examples of the range in the 2026 roundup |
GamesRadar+ described the result as “a hyper-edited, dick-joke-filled, tonally inconsistent movie that ends halfway through its own story.” That criticism identifies both structural and tonal problems: the film moves rapidly between set pieces and jokes, then stops before resolving the larger narrative it establishes.
Why critics were divided
Recurring complaints
- Too much plot and too many characters: GamesRadar+ critic Jack Shepherd wrote that the movie tries to cram “three movies’ worth of characters and plot into two hours.”
- Weak connection to the games: Trace Sauveur of Awards Watch wrote that it “doesn’t capture the core of its source material.”
- Fan-service overload: Several reviews said references and recognizable characters take priority over a coherent story.
- An unsatisfying ending: Reviews repeatedly objected to the abrupt stopping point and lack of a complete climax.
- Inconsistent tone: Action, broad comedy, sexual jokes and dramatic material do not always fit together smoothly.
Why some viewers may still enjoy it
The response was not uniformly hostile. Aaron Neuwirth of We Live Entertainment wrote, “This movie still ultimately lands on the fun side.” Bill Bria of Slashfilm called it “a highly watchable movie” and said it was possible to convince yourself you were having fun. Consequence’s Liz Shannon Miller found that, at its best, the film works as “a deranged live-action cartoon,” which was exactly the experience she wanted.
Rank #2
- Shrink-wrapped
That split explains why a sub-50% aggregate does not mean every viewer will dislike the film. The same qualities that frustrate reviewers—excess, abrupt tonal shifts and cartoonish spectacle—can appeal to audiences looking for camp rather than a faithful, tightly plotted adaptation.

What the new Street Fighter is about
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the 2026 film follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters after Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. A conspiracy forces the former allies to confront one another and their shared past.
The listed cast includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Jason Momoa as Blanka and 50 Cent as Balrog. The combination of tournament action, a conspiracy plot and a large ensemble helps explain why reviewers described the movie as crowded.
Why Boll sees a comparison with his own films
A GamesBeat interview with Boll, updated June 18, 2025, lists House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Postal, Far Cry, Dungeon Siege and BloodRayne among his video-game films. The passage cites a 1% Rotten Tomatoes score for Alone in the Dark, although it does not specify the year of that score.
Rank #4
- English language, English closed captions
Boll told GamesBeat, “Before me there were things like Street Fighter and so on. Besides the bad reviews, they made good money, so there was more money for game-based films.” He also said, “I never said Alone in the Dark or whatever was a masterpiece.” His broader claim that some of his films earned substantial home-video and television revenue is presented as Boll’s own defense; the cited interview does not independently verify those figures.
Street Fighter adaptations have a poor review history
The comparison is easier to understand because the earlier live-action film was also badly received. Rotten Tomatoes records the 1994 Street Fighter at 20% positive reviews from 90 critics. Metacritic lists a 34/100 score based on 21 critics.
Best Value
Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus for the 1994 film says its “mild entertainment” comes from campy one-liners and Raul Julia’s overacting, but that nonstop action cannot overcome a “predictable, uneven storyline.” The 2026 film therefore enters a franchise with an established critical problem: spectacle and recognizable characters have not always produced a satisfying adaptation.
| Comparison axis | 2026 film | 1994 film | Boll’s adaptations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aggregate reception | 41% initially, later 45% on Rotten Tomatoes | 20% positive on Rotten Tomatoes; 34/100 on Metacritic | Collective score not stated; Alone in the Dark is cited at 1% |
| Plot and ending | Critics called it overstuffed and abruptly incomplete | Critics called the storyline predictable and uneven | No single conclusion applies to the listed films |
| Tone and fan service | Tonally inconsistent and heavily dependent on fan service | Campy one-liners and overacting were noted | Not established as a single shared style in the cited coverage |
| Enjoyment | Some critics found it fun or watchable despite the flaws | Mild entertainment was acknowledged | Boll’s commercial and audience claims are not independently verified here |
Is the 2026 Street Fighter really that bad?
The available reviews support a more precise answer than a simple yes or no. Critics largely objected to the movie’s crowded construction, uneven tone and incomplete-feeling story, while a minority found its exaggerated action-comedy energy entertaining. A Rotten Tomatoes score below 50% indicates that negative reviews outnumbered positive ones at the reported points, but it does not establish that the film is unwatchable or that every element fails.
Boll’s “vindication” is consequently a punchline rather than a critical re-ranking of his filmography. The new movie has its own documented weaknesses, yet its divided response also shows why adaptation quality cannot be reduced to one franchise, one director or one notorious example.
