USS Connecticut Repair Now Targets Summer 2027, Not a 2026 Return

The U.S. Navy’s latest reported target for completing repairs to USS Connecticut (SSN-22) is summer 2027, not 2026. That is a target for finishing the submarine’s extended maintenance availability—not a published date for its return to operational tasking.

What is the latest USS Connecticut repair timeline?

On September 28, 2026, The War Zone reported that a Navy official had set summer 2027 as the target to complete Connecticut’s complex Extended Docking Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. The Navy had previously expected the work to finish in late 2026.

The reported milestones are successive projections, not dates when the submarine returned to service:

Reported milestone What it represented
September 2025 Completion projection when the availability formally began in February 2023.
Early 2026 Revised projection reported in July 2023.
Late 2026 The Navy’s target as relayed to The War Zone in July 2025.
Summer 2027 The latest reported completion target, relayed by a Navy official to The War Zone on September 28, 2026.

Finishing the availability does not necessarily mean the submarine will immediately resume operational missions. The September 2026 report gives no separate operational return date.

What damaged USS Connecticut?

Connecticut struck an underwater seamount in the South China Sea in October 2021. The impact caused severe damage, particularly to the submarine’s bow. After the incident, the boat reached Guam and then San Diego before moving to the Puget Sound area for repair.

What work is the Navy doing?

A Navy official quoted by The War Zone described the work as “structural and systems restoration and required lifecycle maintenance.” The official characterized the EDSRA as complex. The description indicates that the availability encompasses both repair of the collision damage and maintenance work; it is not presented as a bow-only repair.

Why has the completion target moved?

The available September 2026 reporting does not establish a definitive cause for each schedule change. The War Zone notes the broader challenge of major repairs to the Seawolf class, which is out of production and consists of only three submarines, but that context does not identify the cause of any particular slip. Parts, workforce availability, shipyard capacity, or another single factor should not be treated as a confirmed explanation based on this reporting.

The total cost of Connecticut’s repair is also not established in the report. Earlier congressional appropriations it discusses—$40 million for emergency repairs and $10 million for a bow dome—are not a stated total repair bill.

How does Connecticut’s repair fit the wider submarine maintenance picture?

The Government Accountability Office’s 2026 report describes maintenance strain across the attack-submarine fleet. Without mitigation, it projects that 15 attack submarines could enter inactive idle time during fiscal years 2026 through 2030, producing more than 14,000 idle days and $3.1 billion in operating and support costs. Those are fleetwide projections, not figures for Connecticut’s repair.

What is planned for the submarine after the repair?

The War Zone reports that the Navy’s current plan is to inactivate Connecticut in 2031. That is a planning date, not a guaranteed outcome, and the report does not establish how much operational service the submarine will complete between the end of the availability and that planned inactivation.
