Do not pay for a used phone until you have erased it and completed setup yourself. An iPhone that displays “iPhone Locked to Owner” is still protected by Activation Lock, while an Android phone that requests the previous owner’s Google Account or screen credentials after a reset remains protected. A passcode or a visible Home screen is not proof that the seller has released the device.
Why the lock check matters
Apple’s Activation Lock and Android’s device protection are anti-theft features tied to the previous owner’s account. Erasing a phone does not necessarily remove that protection. The decisive test is whether you can reach the initial setup and continue with your own account, without the former owner entering a password or screen lock.

Apple Support says that an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 15 or later and protected by Activation Lock shows an “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen when it is turned on or woken. Apple also advises buyers not to take ownership until the device has been removed from the previous owner’s account.
Google Pixel Help explains that device protection is turned off by removing the Google Account from the phone. A protected factory reset can require either the old screen unlock or the previous Google Account password.

iPhone: the only acceptable handover
Reject “iPhone Locked to Owner”
If that message appears, stop the transaction. The phone is still associated with the seller’s Apple Account, and you cannot legitimately activate it without the owner’s cooperation. Do not rely on a promise that you can “fix it later,” a receipt, or a remote unlock after payment.
A passcode or Home screen is not enough
If the seller’s passcode prompt or Home screen appears, the iPhone has not been erased. Ask the seller to remove their account and erase the phone while you are standing there. You should not enter your own Apple Account on a device that still contains the seller’s data.

Run the setup test yourself
- Ask the seller to unlock the iPhone in front of you.
- Have the seller sign out of their Apple Account and erase all content and settings. Keep the phone powered on and stay present during the process.
- When the restart finishes, begin setup yourself. The screen should say Hello; Apple identifies that screen as the point at which a device is ready for a new user.
- Continue far enough to confirm that setup does not request the previous owner’s Apple Account. Stop immediately if it does.
Activation Lock can survive an erase, so seeing a freshly reset phone is not, by itself, an acceptance test. The former account must be removed and setup must proceed without it.

Remove the account before resetting
Have the seller open the phone’s account settings and remove their Google Account before starting a factory reset. Menu names differ among manufacturers and Android versions, but the seller should be able to show that the account is no longer listed. If the seller cannot remove it because they do not know the password or screen lock, treat that as a failed sale.

Complete setup after the reset
- Watch the seller unlock the phone before the reset.
- Confirm that the seller’s Google Account is removed.
- Have the seller perform the factory reset using the phone’s own settings.
- Start the welcome/setup process yourself.
- Do not pay if setup asks for the previous Google Account or the old screen credentials. That is the protected-reset check described by Google Pixel Help.
Android behavior varies by manufacturer, so the wording and screens may differ. The rule does not: a phone that requires the previous owner’s credentials is not ready for you to use.
Use this in-person checklist before handing over money
- Ask the seller to power on and unlock the phone in front of you.
- For an iPhone, reject any “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen.
- If an iPhone opens to a passcode or Home screen, require the seller to erase it while you watch.
- For Android, require removal of the seller’s Google Account before the factory reset.
- Start setup yourself and verify that no previous Apple Account, Google Account, or screen lock is requested.
- Record the IMEI or serial number and keep the listing and seller’s messages.
- Confirm the written return policy and test the phone on your intended carrier or network separately.
When to pay—and when to walk away
Complete the live setup test before payment, not after you get home. A later reset, software update, or other setup event can expose a lock that was never released. If the seller wants payment before allowing an erase and setup, walk away or use a transaction method that preserves a return right; do not treat urgency as evidence that the phone is clean.

A seller’s return window is useful only if it gives you enough time to perform the account-lock test and return the device without a dispute. Prefer a written statement that the previous account has been removed, plus a process that lets you inspect and activate the phone before the sale is final.

Compare sellers on protections, not just price
| Question | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Live setup | You can erase the phone and complete the welcome process before paying. |
| Return window | A clear, written period long enough to test activation and network service. |
| Account-removal guarantee | The seller confirms in writing that the prior Apple or Google account is removed. |
| Network compatibility | Support for your carrier’s bands, SIM or eSIM requirements, checked separately from the lock test. |
| IMEI and financing checks | A way to verify the identifier and confirm there is no separate carrier, blacklist, or financing issue. |
| Refurbisher status | If relevant, a documented certification and warranty; certification does not replace the live account-lock test. |
What the lock test does not prove
A clean Apple or Google setup screen does not establish that the phone is compatible with your carrier, free of an unpaid device-financing balance, undamaged, or covered by a particular warranty. Check the IMEI or serial number, network compatibility, condition, and return terms as separate decisions. Apple and Google’s account-lock guidance establishes the activation test, not the reputation or certification of any marketplace or seller.

The practical decision
Buy only when the seller has removed the old account, the phone has been erased, and you can advance through setup without the former owner’s credentials. For iPhone, the acceptable starting point is a clean Hello screen; for Android, setup must not invoke the prior Google Account or screen lock. Any other result means you should not pay.
