Compare the exact machines, not just their age or sticker prices.
Compare equivalent MacBook Air configurations
Start with the exact model year and chip, then match the display size, unified memory and storage. A lower-priced laptop may be a poor substitute if it has less memory or storage than the new model you would otherwise buy.

Apple’s US store has listed refurbished 13-inch MacBook Air examples with an M4 chip, 16GB unified memory and 256GB SSD, originally released in 2025, as well as a refurbished 13-inch M5 model described as originally released in March 2026. These examples show that refurbished options can be recent; they do not establish that either is cheaper or better value than a comparable new configuration. What protection comes with a refurbished MacBook Air?
Apple describes its Certified Refurbished products as pre-owned items that undergo a refurbishment process. The cited Apple listing states a one-year limited warranty and a 14-day return policy. Confirm the terms on the actual listing and in your location before buying; Apple’s stated protections should not be assumed for a private-sale used laptop or a device refurbished by another seller. For a third-party refurbished model, read the seller’s own listing and terms. Establish who covers repairs, how long coverage lasts, what the return window is and how a return must be arranged. A “refurbished” label alone does not tell you what protections apply.
How to check a used MacBook Air’s battery
Apple Support says you can find the current cycle count under Battery Information. Its model table lists a maximum cycle count of 1,000 for MacBook Air models with M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 chips. That figure is a model-specific cycle-count limit—not a promise of a particular runtime or battery capacity up to that point. Consider cycle count alongside battery-health status, observed condition, the seller’s return terms and the price. Inspect a private-sale Mac before paying
A private listing may cost less, but do not treat the lower sticker price as proof of value. Ask for the exact model and configuration, and inspect the laptop in person where possible. Check the battery status and cycle count, test the display, keyboard, ports, speakers, camera and charging, and confirm that the Mac can be erased and activated without another person’s account lock.
- Confirm the seller’s identity and clarify what, if any, warranty or return protection applies.
- Check the included charger and accessories, and factor in the cost of anything missing.
- Consider whether battery service or another immediate repair could erase the apparent saving.
When is used or new the better deal?
Choose used or refurbished when
- The configuration meets your needs and is comparable to the new MacBook Air you are considering.
- The price difference remains worthwhile after accounting for condition, included accessories and possible service.
- You understand the seller’s warranty and return terms, and the battery and machine pass your checks.
Choose new when
- You prefer a new device and the current price difference is not worth accepting the used machine’s condition or seller-specific protections.
- You cannot verify the used laptop’s configuration, battery, account status or working condition.
- The used listing’s warranty, return terms or likely repair costs make the overall value uncertain.
There is no reliable universal savings percentage or price cutoff: prices vary by market, configuration, condition and date. Compare current local listings for equivalent models and make the decision on the complete cost and protections, not age alone.
