NordVPN can make public Wi‑Fi safer by encrypting your connection, and one subscription currently supports up to 10 devices at the same time. That is useful for households or travelers carrying several phones, laptops and tablets, but a VPN cannot make a fake hotspot trustworthy or eliminate every online threat. Pricing and renewal terms change by country and promotion, so check the live offer before paying.
Why public Wi‑Fi needs extra care
Hotel, airport and café networks are convenient but not automatically trustworthy. Attackers can create fake hotspots with familiar names, and poorly secured networks may expose traffic to interception or manipulation. That does not mean every public hotspot is compromised; it means you should treat an unknown network as untrusted.

NordVPN’s public‑Wi‑Fi guidance recommends using a kill switch, DNS‑leak protection and automatic connection on untrusted Wi‑Fi. Encryption helps prevent people on the same network from reading ordinary traffic between your device and the VPN server. It does not protect you from phishing pages, malware, weak account passwords or a malicious website you choose to visit.

NordVPN says one subscription covers up to 10 simultaneous devices, including phones, tablets and computers. The limit applies to devices connected at the same time under one account, rather than the total number of devices on which you may install the apps.

What counts as a device
- Each connected phone, tablet or computer uses one of the 10 simultaneous connections.
- A router configured with NordVPN uses one device slot while extending VPN protection to devices on that router’s network.
- If multiple devices connect to the same VPN server, NordVPN Support says they must use different VPN protocols.
This makes the allowance practical for a family, a work-and-personal setup, or a traveler carrying several devices. If you need more than 10 active connections, disconnect idle devices or use a separate account.
Connecting from a hotel, airport or café
Many public networks use a captive portal: a browser login or acceptance page that appears before normal internet access is granted. NordVPN describes these portals as common at hotels, airports and cafés.

- Open your device’s Wi‑Fi settings and join the venue’s network.
- Open a browser and complete the venue’s sign-in, terms acceptance or room-number form.
- Open the NordVPN app and connect to a server.
- If the VPN disconnects or the network changes, reconnect after completing the portal again. Some portals block VPN traffic until their login step has finished.
Do not enter payment details or passwords into a portal unless the network name and page address match the venue’s instructions. A VPN encrypts the connection after it is established; it cannot validate that the hotspot itself is genuine.

What the current deal does—and does not—tell you
NordVPN’s official pricing page promotes public‑Wi‑Fi protection, Threat Protection and coverage for 10 devices. However, plan names, introductory prices, renewal costs, billing periods and promotion end dates are volatile. They can differ by country, currency, tax treatment and whether you choose a monthly or longer subscription.

Do not rely on an old percentage discount or a quoted renewal figure. Before checkout, verify the total introductory charge, the amount and interval that will renew, whether taxes are included, the cancellation process and the applicable 30-day refund terms. A low first-term price can be poor value if the recurring renewal is much higher and you forget to cancel.
Limits and sensible precautions
- A VPN does not prove that a hotspot is authentic. Confirm the network name with staff and avoid auto-joining similarly named networks.
- Captive portals may require a temporary disconnect or a reconnect after login.
- Some services restrict access when they detect VPN addresses; switching servers may help, but there is no guarantee.
- Use HTTPS, multi-factor authentication, current software and unique passwords alongside the VPN.
- Keep the kill switch and auto-connect settings aligned with your travel needs, and test them before relying on them away from home.
Who should consider it
The 10-device allowance is most compelling if you regularly use several devices on hotel, airport or café Wi‑Fi and want one account rather than separate subscriptions. It is less compelling if you rarely use public networks, need only one device and would not use the automatic connection, kill switch or router options. In either case, judge the offer by its full renewal cost—not just the advertised first term—and by whether the apps support your operating systems.
