Choose USDT or USDC based first on what the recipient can accept: the exact token on the exact blockchain network. Then compare the route’s fees and confirmation requirements, verify the destination details, and consider how each issuer’s reserve disclosures and redemption rules fit your needs. Neither token is guaranteed to trade at exactly $1 at every moment, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for payments.
Start with the recipient’s token and network
“USDT” or “USDC” alone is not a complete payment instruction. Each token may exist on multiple blockchains, and support depends on the receiving wallet, exchange, or payment service. Ask the recipient or check the provider’s current deposit instructions for both the token and network before sending.

Tether warns that senders must select the correct transport protocol when transferring its tokens. Circle lists 38 native USDC networks as of September 16, 2026. These lists and provider integrations can change, so a network’s existence does not establish that a particular recipient supports it. See Tether’s FAQ and Circle’s USDC page.

Do not assume USDT and USDC are interchangeable, even if an address looks familiar. Sending the wrong token or using an unsupported network can leave funds inaccessible or require provider assistance; recovery is not assured.

Compare the actual transfer route, not a general speed or fee claim
A transfer’s cost and timing depend on the blockchain network, congestion, and the exchange or payment provider’s own charges and confirmation policy. The reviewed issuer materials do not provide a matched, current USDT-versus-USDC fee or timing schedule. Before confirming, check the live fee quote and expected completion time for the precise route you intend to use.
- Check the network fee and any withdrawal or payment-service fee separately.
- Review the provider’s stated confirmation threshold and processing window.
- If you choose to send a small test transfer, treat it as an extra precaution rather than a substitute for checking the token, network, and address; a second transfer can incur another fee.
Understand how you would turn tokens into dollars
Holding a stablecoin in a wallet is different from having an unconditional right to redeem it directly with its issuer. In practice, many retail holders obtain dollars through the exchange, wallet, or payment provider they use, subject to that provider’s account, geography, and withdrawal rules.

Tether’s terms make direct issuance and redemption conditional: a customer must be verified, and minimum amounts, other requirements, and fees may apply. Redemption proceeds are sent to a bank account in the verified customer’s name. The terms also allow reserves to include cash, cash equivalents, and other assets, including loan receivables and assets from affiliates. Tether says its tokens are not legal tender and are not covered by FDIC, SIPC, or analogous insurance. Read the current Tether legal terms before relying on direct redemption.

Circle describes USDC as redeemable one-for-one for dollars, but Circle Mint bank transfers are for institutions, not individuals. A retail user should not assume that a self-custody balance can be redeemed directly through Circle; check the terms of the exchange or provider through which you plan to cash out. Circle’s current information is on its USDC page.

Compare reserve disclosure without treating it as a guarantee
Issuers describe their reserves and reporting in different ways. Those disclosures help readers assess how an issuer says its token is backed, but neither a report nor an assurance is a guarantee of immediate retail access to dollars or of a token’s market price.
| Disclosure point | USDC | USDT |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer-described cadence | Circle says reserve holdings and associated mint/burn flows are disclosed weekly. A Big Four accounting firm provides monthly third-party assurance under AICPA attestation standards. Circle Transparency & Stability | Tether says circulation data is typically updated daily and reserve information typically quarterly, while stating it does not guarantee a particular update schedule. Tether FAQs |
| Reserve information relevant to holders | Circle says USDC reserves are held separately from Circle’s operating funds for holders’ benefit. The live reserve snapshot displayed on October 5, 2026 is a dated snapshot, not a permanent figure. Circle Transparency & Stability | Tether’s legal terms describe reserves that may include cash, cash equivalents, and other assets, including loan receivables and assets from affiliates. Tether Legal Terms |
These are issuer descriptions, not identical reporting measures. For historical context, the IMF’s December 2025 paper estimated that in June 2025 USDC reserves were 40 percent short-term US Treasury bills, 45 percent overnight reverse repos collateralized with Treasuries, and deposits in financial institutions. The same paper estimated that nearly 75 percent of Tether’s reserves were in short-term US Treasuries, including through reverse repos, with about 5 percent each in bitcoin and gold. These estimates reflect the cited reports and date; they are not live reserve figures. See the IMF paper, Understanding Stablecoins.

“Stable” describes an aim, not an exact market price
Both tokens aim to track the US dollar, but market prices have deviated from parity. The IMF reported in December 2025 that about 99 percent of intraday deviations from target were within 1 percent, with significant exceptions. It describes USDC trading 12 percent below parity after Silicon Valley Bank failed in March 2023, and USDT also moving below parity after the TerraUSD collapse in May 2022; each deviation lasted about two days. These are historical episodes, not predictions of what either token will do next. The figures and examples are in the IMF’s December 2025 paper.
Check whether the issuer still supports the network you plan to use
Network support and issuer arrangements can change. Circle’s page listed 38 native USDC networks as of September 16, 2026. Tether’s terms say redemption under those terms ceased for USD₮ on Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand effective September 1, 2025. These statements do not establish what every exchange or wallet supports today; verify the issuer’s current information and your provider’s deposit and withdrawal options before moving funds.
A practical decision checklist
- Ask the recipient: Which token and exact network can the destination accept?
- Verify the route: Check the destination address, network, provider support, and any deposit limits or confirmation rules.
- Compare the live cost: Review network and provider charges, plus the stated processing expectations, for that route.
- Plan your exit: Confirm how your own exchange or provider converts the token to dollars, and whether direct issuer redemption is actually available to you.
- Choose your disclosure preference: Compare the issuers’ stated reserve information and reporting cadence, while recognizing that disclosures do not eliminate market, provider, or redemption risk.
- Recheck before sending: Support can change, and the correct network is part of the payment instruction.
If both tokens are accepted on the same network and the route otherwise meets your needs, the issuer’s disclosure and your cash-out options can help distinguish them. If only one is supported by the recipient, compatibility is the practical deciding factor.
