USB Keyboard Not Recognized: A Step-by-Step Fix for Windows and Mac

A USB keyboard that is not recognized is usually caused by the connection path, insufficient USB power, a hub or dock, USB-C incompatibility, or a keyboard/cable fault. Isolate the problem in this order: reconnect the keyboard, try another port, bypass every hub or adapter, test it on another computer, then check operating-system errors and drivers.

The cross-computer test is the key dividing line. If the keyboard fails on another computer too, inspect or replace the keyboard or its cable. If it works elsewhere, the original computer’s port, hub, power budget, USB-C path, or driver is the more likely cause.

What “USB keyboard not recognized” actually means

People use this phrase for several different symptoms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The keyboard has no lights and produces no input.
  • Windows displays “The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.”
  • macOS displays “USB Devices Disabled” or says the external device needs more power.
  • The keyboard works when connected directly but disappears when routed through a monitor, KVM switch, dock, USB hub, or USB-C adapter.
  • The keyboard works on one computer but not another.

These symptoms do not all have the same remedy. A keyboard that fails on every computer points toward its cable or internal electronics; a keyboard that works elsewhere points toward the computer-side connection, power, compatibility, or software.

Run the five-minute isolation test first

  1. Disconnect the keyboard. Unplug its USB cable from the computer. Microsoft advises waiting briefly so Windows can unload the device driver before reconnecting it.
  2. Reconnect it to a different port. Use a port built into the computer, not one on a monitor, dock, KVM switch, or hub. On a desktop, try both a front and rear port if available.
  3. Remove the connection chain. Temporarily eliminate USB hubs, USB-C dongles, extension cables, monitor pass-through ports, and docking stations. A direct connection gives the keyboard the simplest power and data path.
  4. Inspect the cable and connector. Look for bent contacts, looseness, cuts, crushed sections, or a plug that does not seat fully. If the cable is detachable, reseat it at the keyboard end and try a known-compatible replacement cable.
  5. Check for power. Look for backlighting, indicator LEDs, or a brief flash when you connect the keyboard. No light does not prove the keyboard is dead, but it is useful evidence when combined with the other tests.
  6. Test another computer. Connect the keyboard directly to a second computer without a hub or adapter. This single test separates a keyboard fault from a problem on the original computer.

Do not connect several untested devices while diagnosing. Change one item at a time and note whether the keyboard is detected after each change.

Fix a USB keyboard in Windows

1. Reconnect without a hub

Unplug the keyboard, wait briefly, and plug it directly into another USB port. If it works directly but not through a hub, the keyboard itself is probably serviceable; investigate the hub’s power or compatibility instead of reinstalling the keyboard driver.

2. Check Device Manager and record the code

Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it. Expand the sections that contain keyboards and USB controllers. A yellow warning icon identifies a device Windows has flagged. Open the device’s properties and write down the exact error code and message before changing anything. Microsoft uses that code to distinguish a driver problem from a malfunctioning USB device.

Do not guess at a fix based only on the words “USB device.” The code and the device’s location in Device Manager tell you whether Windows is seeing the keyboard, its USB controller, or an intermediate hub.

3. Apply Windows Update

Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install applicable updates and restart when Windows requests it. A restart is important because USB drivers and controller state are reinitialized during boot.

4. Update the device through Device Manager

Return to the affected entry in Device Manager, open its context menu, choose the driver-update option, and allow Windows to search for an available driver. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, keep the recorded error code; that result does not rule out a bad port, hub, cable, or power condition.

5. Remove a power bottleneck

If Windows reports insufficient USB power, disconnect other USB devices temporarily, especially bus-powered drives, webcams, and additional hubs. Connect the computer to its external power adapter rather than relying on a low battery. Then test the keyboard directly. If the keyboard works after unused devices are removed, reconnect peripherals one at a time to identify the combination that exceeds the available power.

6. Treat USB-C messages as a path problem

When Windows says the last USB device malfunctioned, the fault may be in the keyboard, the driver, or the USB-C route. USB-C connectors look alike but can support different data modes and power capabilities. Test a compatible cable and a USB-C port known to support the required connection, and remove adapters or docks during the test.

Fix a USB keyboard on a Mac

Reconnect and change the port

Disconnect the keyboard and reconnect it to another port on the Mac. Apple recommends this basic reset when macOS reports “USB Devices Disabled” or says an external device needs more power.

Bypass hubs and Thunderbolt docks

Connect the keyboard directly to the Mac instead of through a USB or Thunderbolt hub. If direct connection works, reconnect the hub by itself and then add the keyboard. This identifies whether the hub, its cable, or the total load is responsible.

Power a self-powered hub

If the hub has an AC adapter, make sure the adapter is plugged in and switched on. A self-powered hub can supply peripherals independently of the Mac’s port; without its adapter, it may behave like an unpowered hub and fail when several devices are attached.

Reduce the load

Disconnect unused USB devices and connect the Mac to external power. Then test the keyboard again. A low-battery computer or a hub serving many devices can reduce the power available to a keyboard even when the keyboard itself is functioning.

Why hubs, docks and adapters cause failures

A hub adds another controller, cable, and power budget between the keyboard and computer. An unpowered hub must draw all of its power from the host port; several attached devices can leave too little for reliable operation. A powered hub uses an AC adapter, but it can still fail if its adapter is disconnected, its cable is faulty, or its USB controller is incompatible.

Docks and monitors add further variables, including firmware, shared bandwidth, and alternate USB-C modes. A keyboard needs ordinary USB data, but the USB-C port, cable, adapter, and dock must all provide a compatible data path. A connector that fits physically is not proof that the complete path supports the device.

Use this connection order

  1. Test the keyboard directly on the computer.
  2. If it works, attach the hub or dock with its own power adapter connected.
  3. Use a cable and adapter rated for the port’s USB data function.
  4. Reconnect other peripherals one at a time.
  5. If failure returns only when the hub is present, replace the hub with a self-powered model or keep the keyboard on a direct port.

When the keyboard or cable should be replaced

Replacement is justified only after cross-computer testing. If the keyboard is not detected on a second computer when connected directly, and another port and compatible cable make no difference, the fault follows the keyboard. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says that when a device does not work on another PC, “you might need to replace it.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A detachable cable is the least expensive component to isolate: test a known-compatible data cable, not a charge-only cable. If the keyboard still fails on multiple computers, replacement of the keyboard is more rational than continued driver troubleshooting.

Do not replace a working keyboard merely because it fails through one dock. A direct connection that succeeds demonstrates that the keyboard can communicate; repair the connection path first.

Compare the practical fixes

Fix Use it when What it proves or changes Limitations
Different direct USB port The current port may be damaged, disabled, or overloaded Changes the host controller and physical contacts Does not solve a failed keyboard or incompatible cable
Bypass hub, dock, monitor, or KVM The keyboard works intermittently or only fails in a chain Removes intermediate power and compatibility variables Leaves the hub problem unresolved for other devices
Connect the hub’s AC adapter A powered hub is available but peripherals report low power Supplies the hub independently of the computer port Cannot fix a defective hub or incompatible USB-C path
Self-powered USB hub Direct connection works but an unpowered hub does not Adds a dedicated power source for attached devices Adds cost, cabling, and another device that can fail
USB-C to USB-A adapter The computer has USB-C and the keyboard has USB-A Bridges connector formats when both sides support compatible USB data Physical fit alone does not guarantee data or power compatibility
Driver and Windows Update checks Device Manager shows a warning or Windows reports a driver-related error Refreshes the operating-system software path Cannot repair a broken cable, port, hub, or keyboard
Replacement wired keyboard The original fails on multiple computers and direct ports Removes the suspect keyboard from the system Unnecessary if the fault is confined to one computer or hub

Prevent the problem from returning

  • Keep the keyboard on a direct computer port when reliability matters.
  • Leave the AC adapter connected to a self-powered hub before attaching peripherals.
  • Use USB-C cables and adapters intended for data, not charge-only cables.
  • Avoid stacking multiple unpowered hubs.
  • Disconnect unused, high-draw USB devices when a computer is running on battery.
  • Label a known-good port and cable so future troubleshooting starts with verified components.
  • After changing a dock or hub, test the keyboard by itself before reconnecting the rest of the setup.

A concise decision tree

  1. Does the keyboard work directly on another computer? If no, inspect or replace the keyboard or cable. If yes, continue with the original computer.
  2. Does it work when connected directly? If no, check that computer’s port, USB-C compatibility, power state, and operating-system error. If yes, the hub, dock, monitor, KVM, or adapter is the failing link.
  3. Does adding hub power restore operation? If yes, the original setup exceeded the hub’s available power. If no, replace or bypass the hub and verify cable compatibility.
  4. Does Windows show a warning? Record the exact Device Manager code and complete Windows Update and driver checks before choosing replacement hardware.
